The Chicago Academy of Sciences is proposing the Integrated Mathematics, Science, and Technology (IMSAT) pilot project: a three year research, development, and testing project to create an-integrated math, science, and technology experience-based activities program for PreK through 8th grade. The IMSAT pilot project will develop a series of math curricula that incorporate best practice methods including: integrated curricula, "real world" activities, constructivist pedagogies, cooperative learning, and performance assessment. As a result of the Academy's very successful Science on the Go! program, principals and teachers have requested a similar program for math. This project would use the existing PreK - 8th grade science program's experience-based activities and build a parallel set of math activities. The real observation, measurement, problem-solving, etc. nature of science activities provides the perfect base for math understanding and application. In addition, the activities would utilize the Internet for "real-world" research and data sites. All IMSAT activities would be derived from the State's new standards, as are all of the existing science activities. The mission of this project is to improve access to and the quality of math, science, and technology education for all students.

Math Activities for K-12 Teachers
In December, 1997, NASA Dryden Flight Research Center funded Dan Biezad, Professor of Aerospace Engineering, and Robin Ward, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, both of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, to develop materials for K-12 teachers based on aeronautical themes and NASA projects. One major goal of this project was to make the learning of mathematics more engaging and realistic for students, by using real-world applications.

A Resource Package for Integrating Mathematics and Algebra-Based Physics
The investigators created and tested classroom activities that help students make connections between mathematics and physics. These activities promote a more student-centered classroom and strengthen workplace-relevant skill in students; in addition to helping them strengthen their ability to transfer their mathematics skills to other applications. The activities for this resource package elicit, confront, resolve, access model developed in the 1997-2000 work ( CHIMP ).. This is an NSF-ATE sponsored activity. The Teaching Integrated Math and Science (TIMS) Project is pleased to announce a new professional development initiative, the " Math Trailblazers Electronic Learning Community: Focus on Assessment." This initiative will explore the unique structure of the Math Trailblazers assessment program, grades 3-5. All interactions will take place on-line. There will be readings, activities, and discussions, all of which are focused exclusively on the use of Math Trailblazers in your classroom. Description
The 8-week intensive phase begins with the study of the philosophy and design of the assessment program in Math Trailblazers . In the following weeks, you will complete assessment activities with your students and discuss with us what happens in your classroom. Because student growth in mathematics develops over time, we will continue through the end of the semester with two types of activities. There will be weekly discussion questions to sharpen the focus on assessment. Also, later in the spring, we will have two on-line guest lecturers to share their experiences and help you reflect on the growth of your students.

    Navigation and Exploration
Created by Lorrie Schonour Unit Overview
The idea for this unit came about from teaching world geography to my sixth grade students. So many cultures around the world have been influenced due to exploration, and the conquering and colonization of one group of people by another. In addition, part of our sixth grade science curriculum is oceanography, with an emphasis on the videotape series, Voyage of the Mimi. It compliments this interdisciplinary unit quite well. Unit Implementation Each of the four sixth grade teachers will be going self contained during the 1997-98 school year, so there can really be three options to teaching this unit: 1) each teacher is responsible for teaching the entire unit to their own self contained class, 2) the teachers can divide into two teaching teams and switch for science and social studies, leaving the activities for language arts and math to be taught to their own individual classes, or 3) each teacher can be responsible for a particular contact area. The art teacher will also be included in this unit. Time will be spent with her, familiarizing her with the objectives of the unit and her participation with the sixth grade teachers.

Each unit include additional Fine Arts and writing exeriences as well. Using the books together gives the classroom an integrated unit using the theme of The Gingerbread Man. Honey Pot Press also has a collection of Center Games for practicing basic skills in Math and Language Arts. Games include the Zip Around format, Bingo format, and Board Game formats. These are available in English and Spanish for further practice of counting, addition, rhyming, letter/sound matching, shape naming, position words, clock reading, coins, color naming, and more, using a Gingerbread Man theme.

    • THE LANGUAGE ARTS UNIT Begin your integrated unit using the Gingerbread Man Language Arts activities described on the linking page.
    • COUNTING OBJECTS - Have a parent volunteer count Gingerbread erasers (available through Oriental Trading Company 1-800-228-2269) with each child recording how far they can count. As a center activity, give the students small paper plates with one numeral written on each plate. Ask the students to place the number of Gingerbread cookies (erasers) on each plate or card, according to the numeral written on the plate.
