News Release
Argentina: on the verge of political and institutional chaos
MONTREAL, March 13, 2002 Organized by the International Federation of Human Rights, the mission set out to gather information on the reported violations of civil and political rights as an official response to widespread protests at the government's failure to guarantee citizens' basic social, economic and cultural rights. It found an alarming deterioration in the living standards of the majority of Argentines and clear evidence that the government is not meeting its obligations to its citizens, as set out in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, ratified by Argentina in 1986. Official statistics show that currently 15 million of a population of 37 million live beneath the poverty line, with the numbers rising daily, and the middle classes affected as much as the poorer classes. Domestic production is virtually paralyzed, and the government, with its tax and debt revenues shrunk by 50%, is on the brink of bankruptcy. As the fissure deepens daily between the citizens of Argentina and the state institutions, the Mission was also alarmed to note the state's response of criminalization of legitimate social protest. Hundreds of cases, such as that of illegally imprisoned anti-hunger activist Emilio Ali, who has become a symbol of the government's attempts to delegitimize democratic dissent, only further discredit the judiciary, already dishonoured by its failure to bring to justice past military rulers for their crimes against humanity.

U.S. Department of State
Jordan Report on Human Rights Practices for 1997
Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, January 30, 1998. JORDAN The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a constitutional monarchy that has been ruled by King Hussein since 1952. The Constitution concentrates a high degree of executive and legislative authority in the King, who determines domestic and foreign policy. The Prime Minister and the Cabinet manage the daily affairs of government. The Parliament consists of the 40-member Senate appointed by the King and the 80-member Chamber of Deputies, which is elected by the people every 4 years. After the 1989 elections and the lifting of martial law in 1991, the lower house began to assert itself on domestic and foreign policy issues. The Parliament elected in 1993, however, was less assertive than its predecessor. Over 500 candidates competed in the October parliamentary elections, despite a boycott by the Islamist and other parties. The election was marred by reports of registration irregularities, fraud, and restrictions on the press and on campaign materials

The destruction of New York City's World Trade Center and the attack on the Pentagon in Washington raise innumerable questions that can be dealt with in the classroom. Although the most recent terrorist attacks have the greatest impact on America, they are part of a long and tragic history of terrorism that has been developing around the globe for decades. Constitutional Rights Foundation has prepared "America Responds to Terrorism," " War in Iraq ," and " Reflecting on September 11 ," a series of online lessons and resources designed for classroom use. We will continue to add lessons on issues related to these troubling times. We at CRF hope you find these resources useful during this time of national crisis. International Experts on Race Visit Civil Rights Museum
By David Pitts
Washington File Staff Writer (Former Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King died) Memphis, Tennessee "I was very moved by what I saw here, even though I knew the basic story of the American civil rights movement," said David Sam of Norway. "I knew little about the details of that struggle," said Rosanna Wong from Hong Kong. They were talking about the National Civil Rights Museum located on the site of the former Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed on April 4, 1968. The museum not only honors King's memory, it houses a comprehensive overview of the U.S. civil rights movement. The international visitors were in Oxford, Mississippi to attend a conference on "International Perspectives on Race, Ethnicity and Intercultural Relations," held April 18-22 at the University of Mississippi. While there, however, they took time out to visit the museum located about 70 miles north of Oxford in Memphis, Tennessee. The main exhibits are vignettes capturing pivotal moments in the struggle of African Americans for equal rights in the United States, including the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision that outlawed school segregation, the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott that led to the ending of segregation in public transport, and the 1963 March on Washington at which King gave his electrifying "I Have A Dream" speech."

This report was written by Sarah A. DeCosse, researcher with the Americas division of Human Rights Watch, on the basis of research she carried out between 1997 and 1999. Anne Manuel, deputy director of the Americas division, contributed research and writing to the chapter on international policy and edited the report. Jos© Miguel Vivanco, executive director of the Americas division, Joanne Mariner, associate counsel at Human Rights Watch, and Jeri Laber, senior advisor to Human Rights Watch, also edited the report. We received help with the research and production of this report from Megan Himan, Jessica Galera, and Monisha Bajaj, associates with the Americas division, as well as several interns, including Amanda Sussman, Ariana Grebe, Loren Becker, Shadi Aryabod, Carina Cristov£o, Jessica Baumgarten, and Sarah Carey. Special thanks to Steven Lee Austin for his assistance in the production of this report. We are indebted to all of the Cuban former political prisoners, family members of political prisoners, human rights activists, independent journalists, labor rights activists, and others interviewed for this report. We especially appreciate the willingness of those living in Cuba to speak to us. We also are grateful to Giselda Hidalgo and Amado J. Rodrguez of Human Rights in Cuba for their valuable assistance. We would like to thank David Nachman, board member of the Americas division of Human Rights Watch, who interviewed Cuban Justice Minister Roberto Daz Sotolongo for this report.

For Immediate Release Privacy Commissioner's Annual Report
George Radwanski's Concerns Justified Says Civil Liberties Coalition OTTAWA - Members of a national coalition set up to monitor the application of Canada's anti-terrorism legislation applaud the annual report tabled yesterday in Parliament by Privacy Commissioner George Radwanski. The International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG) shares the concerns expressed by the Commissioner that the privacy rights guaranteed by the Canadian Charters of Rights are being seriously eroded by the web of anti-terrorism legislation adopted by Parliament since September 2001, or about to be adopted in coming months. "The Privacy Commissioner has performed a service for all of us, citizens and legislators, by focusing attention on the impact of Bill C-17 and related initiatives, on existing human and civil rights protections" says Gerry Barr, co-Chair of the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG) and President/CEO of the Canadian Council for International Co-operation. "Like Mr. Radwanski, we are concerned that measures adopted to protect Canadians are being used as an excuse to increase the surveillance powers of police and of the state for purposes other than the fight against terrorism, and constitute a violation of basic freedoms under the Charter of Rights".
