International Law Enforcement Academies
International Law Enforcement Academies (ILEAs) advance U.S. interests in international cooperation while promoting social, political and economic stability by combating crime. These academies offer a core law enforcement program targeted at mid-level officials in the police and criminal justice services of strategic countries throughout the world. The ILEAs develop an extensive network of alumni, who will become the leaders and decision-makers in their respective countries, to exchange information with their U.S. counterparts and assist in transnational investigations. The Department of State works with the Departments of Justice and Treasury and with foreign governments to implement the ILEA programs. INL’s primary role is to provide foreign policy guidance to the ILEA Directors, ensure availability of adequate funding to support ILEA operations, and provide oversight that will ensure that U.S. foreign policy objectives are achieved. To date, the combined ILEAs have trained over 8,000 officials from 50 countries. ILEA Budapest (Hungary) opened in 1995 to provide assistance to the Newly Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. Trainers from the United States, Hungary, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Russia, INTERPOL and the Council of Europe provide instruction.

About the International Law Students Association
The International Law Students Association (ILSA) is a non-profit association of students and young lawyers dedicated to the study and promotion of international law. Generally, legal education in the U.S. and elsewhere focuses upon domestic or local law. ILSA is dedicated to supplementing this traditional approach with opportunities for study, research and career networking which concentrates on international and transnational law. By combining the resources of our law-school chapters worldwide, ILSA seeks to make available to our members resources that each individual school may not be able to provide.
ILSA has existed, in various forms, for over forty years. Its history is closely linked with its largest and best-known enterprise, the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.
In 1959, a small group of U.S. and foreign students at Harvard Law School organized and administered an intramural "international law moot" competition. Later re-named in honor of H.E. Philip C. Jessup, justice of the International Court of Justice, this competition expanded over the next three years to include students from nearly a dozen U.S. law schools
In 1962, the Jessup organizers founded the Association of Student International Law Societies (ASILS), an umbrella organization composed of international law interest groups at each university. ASILS was an unincorporated association, with representatives from law schools across the United States and the Caribbean. The Jessup Competition was coordinated by a student officer of the ASILS. According to the founding documents, these students, “believing that the principles of international law should be more fully understood and recognized,” were “determined to educate ourselves and our fellow students in the principles of international law, international organizations and institutions, and comparison of legal systems.”

The SMU Law Review Association and The International Law Review Association each selects its editorial staff on the basis of academic performance and a writing competition. The writing competition is open to all second- and third-year law students, including transfer students, and generally is held during the week immediately preceding the beginning of the fall semester. The Computer Law Review and Technology Journal uses a selection procedure determined by its faculty adviser and student board of editors. The operation and management of each publication is vested in an elected board of editors. The board, selected from the staff, is made up of third-year students who have exhibited a strong ability in legal research and writing. The work of students on the school's three publications has produced periodicals of permanent value to the legal profession.
