Inventing a New Kind of Pencil
So you want to do some inventing? Well then, ask a student in your class to volunteer showing a pencil to the class that needs improving? For example, a pencil like this:
Then ask the following question:
What's wrong with this pencil?
Here are some typical replies:
  • small
  • ugly
  • no eraser
  • needs sharpening
  • made out of wood
  • can't see inside and how it works
  • can't write on chalkboard
  • not made of steel
  • goes down too fast
  • lead always breaks
  • can't eat it
  • easy to lose
  • not interesting
  • not decorated
  • too skinny
  • too fat
Don't forget to say some of those encouraging words . And remember, be non-judgemental, do not allow any criticism, and quickly jot the ideas on the board. Then ask "How can we improve this pencil?" What new features can we add to make it more useful. Here are some more ideas.
Kids Inventions!
  • put an eraser on
  • make the eraser bigger
  • change the color
  • make it longer
  • get a new one
  • make it fatter
  • make it skinnier
After getting half a dozen or so more idea, I dig into my box of pencils and pull out one to fix one of the above mentioned problems. Usually someone notices the lack of an eraser, so I like to show a pencil that has two erasers on the end.
Invariably someone blurts out that it looks like a hammer. Yes, perhaps you might find one like this in your doctor's office! Then I go around the room testing some student's knee reflex, and imitate writing down on a clipboard. "Yup, your reflexes are fine!"

Home Home Summary Working Papers Process Handbook ... Projects In 1994 the MIT Sloan School of Management launched a bold initiative in research and education called "Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century." The mission of the center was to not only understand emerging ways of working, but also to invent entirely new and more effective approaches and put them into practice. The genesis of the effort was found in a unique point in our history. Sweeping political, economic, social and especially technological transformations have created a fundamentally new era of business characterized by unprecedented complexity and rapid change during the 1990s. These sweeping changes have produced startling setbacks for what have been some of the world's most successful companies, and at the same time brought great opportunity for new types of organizations. With a summary conference in 1999, on the eve of the New Millennium, the findings of the six-year effort were presented along with a manifesto for what we propose as an important way of thinking about the organizations of the next century. And while the center gives way to new activities in related areas such as eBusiness, the faculty, research and educational activities continue. This web site provides an overview of the center, its faculty and research. The two primary research projects - the Process Handbook and Interesting Organizations Database - will continue, as will several of the other individual faculty projects.

How to begin building a master plan for institutional intranet growth.

Inventing an INTRAnet
A metaphor for building a master plan for institutional technology growth
R. W. Cavenagh
December 3, 1994 (Clarifications/revisions through Dec 16)
About this document
1. This document is about planning processes, using the creative energy of many individuals at an institution to rough out, then refine, a long term plan for technology growth in a way that is both coherent (because it considers the whole institution) and sustainable (because every component can be revised and changed without altering the concept of the whole). 2. This draft is a brief `executive' version of a larger document under development. It is intended to be generic, in that it could apply to any institution. I hope to publish the fuller version electronically through a jurying organization. I am circulating the draft to a few folks on campus for comment and feedback, knowing that it does speak to some future Dickinson issues. 3. The finished `paper' will incorporate a number of hypertext attributes, both in paper-based and electronic versions. For this reason I have left vacant a small column on the right side of each page. The final versions will permit readers to jump through the document in many different ways, and will permit pulling in supplemental information. 4. The word INTRAnet (without the caps) has been used as a descriptive label in a number of technical publications about networking. A Dialog search has not turned up any use of the word as I will begin to define it, nor have I seen it used capitalized in the fashion I use. Provisionally, I'm claiming it.

http://www.fno.org/parenting/inventing1.html
Parenting for an Age of Information
Chapter One - Inventing
The sandbox is not what it used to be - neither is the back yard, the family room or the school down the street. Raising a son or daughter in these times calls for parents with skill, humor and inventiveness. While today's schools stagger under escalating criticism, conscientious parents find themselves filling in the blanks, providing their children with enriched learning excursions to offset the ditto sheet diets and dreary offerings that characterize too many of today's educational cafeterias. When change and new technologies sweep through our society, the challenge facing parents can be awesome. Will this newest bandwagon keep curiosity and a sense of wonder alive in our children? How do we raise this generation to greet the next century with flexibility, imagination and a resourceful spirit? As change becomes a constant, we need a generation which views change as an adventure, an opportunity and a benefit. We must raise a generation which has embraced a change ethic . They will thrive on change, considering it an opportunity to stretch out into the future and grow. Flexibility and problem solving can replace the GNP as the new indicators of growth of our society. Creating and responding to opportunities is an essential skill in our world today, in much the same way reading was in the eighteenth century.

The Lives of Samuel Langhorne Clemens

By Andrew Hoffman Chapter One: Inventing Sam Clemens Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education. "Pudd'nhead Wilson's Calendar" (1894) Two months premature and weighing five pounds, the baby born to John Marshall and Jane Lampton Clemens on November 30, 1835, in the frontier hamlet of Florida, Missouri, had the worst possible prospects. "A lady came in one day," Jane Clemens wrote later, and "said you don't expect to raise that babe do you. I said I would try. But he was a poor looking object to raise." Writing as Mark Twain, Samuel Langhorne Clemens would claim that Florida, Missouri, "contained a hundred people and I increased the population by one per cent. It is more than the best man in history ever did for any other town." In 1835, the hamlet consisted of just two dusty roads and as many shacks as were needed to house a few hundred people a day's horse-ride away from the nearest Mississippi River community. Laid out in 1831, Florida sat on high, fertile ground where the north and south forks of Salt River joined thirty land miles from the Mississippi and seemed a likely spot to mill and ship the products of the outlying farms. By 1835, the first horse-powered mill gave way to a few water-powered ones; small, flat-bottomed boats carried produce the eighty river miles down to the town of Louisiana, Missouri, where Salt River joined the Big Muddy.

The bittersweet drama INVENTING THE ABBOTTS chronicles the coming of age of two brothers, Doug and Jacey Holt, played with touching sincerity by Joaquin Phoenix (TO DIE FOR) and Billy Crudup (SLEEPERS). Set in 1957 in Haley, Illinois, the show is reminiscent of several old movies, but the story remains fresh and relevant. Doug has fewer social graces than his slightly older brother Jacey. Doug will try anything, including painting on fake sideburns, to impress the girls. Jacey, on the other hand, attracts female companionship like honey attracts flies. As much as they profess their differences, they are remarkably similar in looks and tastes.

About Inventing Flight
Founded in 1989, Inventing Flight: Dayton 2003 is charged with promoting aviation, the Wright Brothers, and especially Dayton, Ohio's role in the birth and future of flight. The Wright Brothers' example reminds us that genius is not predestined, and that conventional roads don't lead to new worlds. Inventing Flight: Dayton 2003 will celebrate expanding the boundaries of human experience via new discoveries with a yearlong tribute to the amazing determination and ingenuity of these two pioneers.
Inventing Flight: Dayton 2003's
mission is...
"To seize the opportunity presented by the centennial anniversary of powered flight in 2003 to strengthen Dayton's identity, pride and common purpose; encourage regional cooperation and leadership; and drive economic development."
