Thinking about food? Everybody else is: Mad cow disease is causing a mini-panic in France. Europeans are stewing about the discovery of genetically modified corn in their food despite assurances that "Frankenfood" would not reach food stores. Consumers aren't swallowing red delicious apples the rot-proof fruit that, after years of intensive crop breeding, tastes better'n, well, cardboard. With the market gone bust, some farmers in Washington State, United States, are burning their orchards. Thanksgiving has arrived in the United States, and the gobbling of turkey is heard across the land.

This drama, set in a small Illinois town in the 1950s and based on a short story by acclaimed author Sue Miller, intertwines the wealthy Abbott daughtersPam (Liv Tyler), Eleanor (Jennifer Connelly), and Alice (Joanna Going)with the working-class Holt sons, Doug (Joaquin Phoenix) and Jacey (Billy Crudup). Jacey Holt believes Mr. Abbott (Will Patton) became rich from a patent he stole from Jacey's late father; he seeks revenge by seducing the Abbott daughters. Enough bitterness exists between the families that when Doug and Pam fall in love, neither family will give the relationship a chance.

The bittersweet drama INVENTING THE ABBOTTS chronicles the coming of age of two brothers, Doug and Jacey Holt, played with touching sincerity by Joaquin Phoenix (TO DIE FOR) and Billy Crudup (SLEEPERS). Set in 1957 in Haley, Illinois, the show is reminiscent of several old movies, but the story remains fresh and relevant. Doug has fewer social graces than his slightly older brother Jacey. Doug will try anything, including painting on fake sideburns, to impress the girls. Jacey, on the other hand, attracts female companionship like honey attracts flies. As much as they profess their differences, they are remarkably similar in looks and tastes.

Inventing the Subject: Gender, Sex, and Texts, 350-1500
This course will explore the cultural configurations of gender and sexuality as they are represented in several kinds of writings and cultural productions (literature, philosophy, historical writings, biography, medical writings, legal documents, visual arts) in order to recover what we can call the "invention" of the human subject in the centuries before the modern era. Central to the "inventions" attributed to this era is the meaning of sexual love, traditionally known as "courtly love," associated with the literature of the 12th through 15th centuries. We will also explore the gendering of literacy itself and the various cultural alignments of masculinity and femininity, and investigate the status and identities of women writers like Marie de France and Heloise. Students will also be introduced to doing research on the Internet and the World Wide Web via The Labyrinth , a World Wide Web server for medieval studies hosted by Georgetown. Students will be invited to attend a special cultural studies conference

Executive summary
The Benton Foundation is seeking to encourage effective use of new technologies in the nonprofit sector. This report provides a brief, first installment in what will become a substantial database that nonprofits can use to share their experiences and ideas about how to make effective use of technology. To accelerate the adoption of new technology in the nonprofit sectorand reduce its costit's important that we look for successful technology applications that can be applied in different spheres. The examples cited here meet several criteria: they are proven and affordable; they can be adapted to a variety of settingsthe use of technology in the field of health care, for instance, might easily by adapted to the social service sector; they can be brought to scalefor instance, the use of technology to serve one city might be applicable nationwide, or it might be possible to adapt one that already serves a national audience to a single city or neighborhood; and they represent uses of technology that are both innovative and appropriate to the resources of nonprofit groupsthese applications achieve specific goals and reach target audiences. As these and many other examples demonstrate, the Information Age could be a golden era for the nonprofit sector. New information and communication technologies are creating enormous opportunities for nonprofits to increase their efficiency, improve the quality of services they provide, and influence policymakers.

Abstract
Around the world, there are unprecedented funding opportunities for creating digital cultural content. However, to date there has been relatively little harmonization of the standards frameworks used in the creation, management and preservation of this content, resulting in duplication of effort, higher costs and diminished interoperability of the end results. An international group of stakeholders are hoping to address this situation by agreeing on a common set of core values and seeking to leverage existing synergies wherever possible.
Digital Rockpools beside Digital Oceans
It will probably not come as a huge surprise to readers of this publication that there are a number of compelling arguments in favor of using digital communication networks to provide access to information, regardless of whether the information was "born digital", or represents digitally-reformatted surrogates of extant analog materials. Chief amongst the advantages of digital information over analog physical counterparts are the comparatively low costs of creation, storage, management and preservation, the theoretical absence of limits on the number of concurrent users, the relative ease with which digital materials can be re-used or re-purposed and, since the Internet is available to a small but growing percentage of the world's populace

Inventing the Internet Again
But now, in the heady Southern California of the 1950s, the young Hughes Aircraft engineer found himself working in an American crucible. He was a design engineer for the Minuteman missile control system. Unlike the liquid-fueled Titans of the previous era, which required hours of preparation before they could fly, Minuteman could be instantly rocketed into the sky. To the Pentagon this seemed safer. The solid-fueled rockets would not be vulnerable for hours on the ground awaiting fueling. But Baran an d his colleagues knew that this would be the most deadly and dangerous military system ever built. One accident and a cloud of missiles was on its way.
Wohlstetter and his colleagues urged that the Pentagon redeploy its strategic forces to the United States and endow them with a second-strike capability-that is, to withstand a first strike and retaliate in kind. Greatly reducing the temptation to go first, this posture would escape the dangerous hair-trigger tenterhooks of the early cold war.

WSI Internet Inventing A to Z Everything you ever wanted to know about making your big idea a marketable reality HomeOfficeMag.com May 2002 By Laura Tiffany You've got the perfect idea. From here, you can make one of two major mistakes: 1) think it's way too hard to become a "real" inventor and just shelve your fabulous doohickey in a dusty corner of your brain, or 2) think it's way too easy and waste money and time without doing the proper preparation and end up with hundreds of unsold fabulous doohickeys in a dusty corner of your garage. There is a middle ground, and its name is research. Inventing is, like most things in this world, something that can be learned if you put enough effort into it. We're not suggesting that anyone can necessarily teach you how to have that brain flash, that Eureka!but you can be taught how to handle that Eureka.

The man seated opposite appeared every bit the successful tycoon. There was authority in his speech and command in his presence. He exuded energy. We had been chatting during the meal but I had been reluctant to take his name, certain that he was known to everyone but me. The occasion was an elaborate dinner at the York Club given by John Bassett to honor Gavin Astor, later Lord Astor, son of the publisher of the London Times . I was one of perhaps eighty guests. The tables were arranged in rows, and the man across from me had dominated the conversation around him, speaking spiritedly and informedly on a number of subjects. After a brief lull in the conversation, he addressed himself to me. "Well now, Mr. Templeton, you left Maclean's because of a dust-up with management. What are you doing now?' "Inventing," I said
