To prevent another hostile bid, LSE boss Clara Furse will have to make her plans clear.
FORTUNE
Tuesday, July 17, 2001
By Steve Zwick
After a decade of deregulating, denationalizing, and demutualizing, the stock exchanges of Europe today find themselves lined up like a string of lottery ballsand now the tumbler will start spinning. On July 5, Euronext, the French-Belgian-Dutch exchange, floated its shares on its own trading platform. The London Stock Exchange will soon follow suit. Then both exchanges will be hanging out where anyone can buy them. In the LSE's case, anyone may well mean Olof Stenhammar, head of Sweden's OM AB, who launched a failed $1.5 billion hostile takeover bid for the exchange last yearand who started the business of exchanges buying and selling each other. Stenhammar says the blueprint he presented during last year's takeover is "still a good one." The LSE is a prime takeover target. Its market capitalization of $1.4 billion is smaller than Euronext's or Germany's Deutsche Boerse, which went public in February. And the LSE won't be raising a single new penny with its listing, since it will simply be shifting shares already trading in a protected over-the-counter market onto a public platform. What's more, the LSE's 4.9% limit on shareholder ownershipthe only thing that shielded it from Stenhammar's bid last yearis expected to evaporate at a shareholder meeting on July 19.

Why do I want that? Well, for one it gives your basic person a good investment option. Heck where do you get rates of over 8% these days when all you have is P5,000? Well this would improve our savings rate right, which is what analysts have been looking for. At the same time, the excess liquidity in the system will be absorbed, lessening the temptation to speculate. And wouldn't it be a safer proposition for the government to owe its own people rather than some multinational banks? Forex risks are eliminated. God knows we don't need more external debt. But then that's just me wondering... December 30, 2002

Internet Fraud: How to Avoid Internet Investment Scams
The Internet serves as an excellent tool for investors, allowing them to easily and inexpensively research investment opportunities. But the Internet is also an excellent tool for fraudsters. That's why you should always think twice before you invest your money in any opportunity you learn about through the Internet. This alert tells you how to spot different types of Internet fraud, what the SEC is doing to fight Internet investment scams, and how to use the Internet to invest wisely.
Navigating the Frontier: Where the Frauds Are
The Internet allows individuals or companies to communicate with a large audience without spending a lot of time, effort, or money. Anyone can reach tens of thousands of people by building an Internet web site, posting a message on an online bulletin board, entering a discussion in a live "chat" room, or sending mass e-mails. It's easy for fraudsters to make their messages look real and credible. But it's nearly impossible for investors to tell the difference between fact and fiction.
Online Investment Newsletters
Hundreds of online investment newsletters have appeared on the Internet in recent years. Many offer investors seemingly unbiased information free of charge about featured companies or recommending "stock picks of the month." While legitimate online newsletters can help investors gather valuable information, some online newsletters are tools for fraud.

Tips for Online Investing:
What You Need to Know About Trading
In Fast-Moving Markets
The price of some stocks, especially recent "hot" IPOs and high tech stocks, can soar and drop suddenly. In these fast markets when many investors want to trade at the same time and prices change quickly, delays can develop across the board. Executions and confirmations slow down, while reports of prices lag behind actual prices. In these markets, investors can suffer unexpected losses very quickly. Investors trading over the Internet or online, who are used to instant access to their accounts and near instantaneous executions of their trades, especially need to understand how they can protect themselves in fast-moving markets. You can limit your losses in fast-moving markets if you
  • know what you are buying and the risks of your investment; and
  • know how trading changes during fast markets and take additional steps to guard against the typical problems investors face in these markets.
