UI hosts Global Assembly on Human Right to Health April 20-22
Posted April 12, 2001 IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa is not immune to the health crisis facing people around the globe. The state's diverse population links Iowa to the global community and is thus affected by global health concerns such as conflict, clean water, sanitation, and lifestyle and infectious diseases. "Infectious diseases, poor sanitation and lack of clean water are only an airplane trip away," said Maureen McCue, M.D., an organizer of an assembly convening at the University of Iowa to address health and human rights. "A Global Assembly: Advancing the Human Right to Health" will be held April 20-22 at the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) on the UI campus. The assembly is organized by the UI Center for Human Rights, Global Health Studies Program and the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health Rights of the Harvard School of Public Health with support from many colleges, departments and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) nationally and internationally. Highlights of the Assembly will be the keynote address given by Daniel Tarantola, M.D. and the plenary address given by Carlos Pazos, M.D. These talks are free and open to the public. Tarantola will speak on "World Health and Human Rights" on Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in the IMU Ballroom. He is a senior policy advisor in the Office of the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). He advises the WHO Director-General on a number of health and human rights issues including HIV/AIDS, communicable diseases and emergency humanitarian action.

Chair, Gambling with the Good Life
"Hello. I am a compulsive and problem gambler trying to recover. I was once a successful bank operations manager and a happily married wife and mother. Because of my gambling I have lost my job, severely strained my marriage, and neglected my children. I am also facing the chance that I will be going to prison and paying back money that I embezzled from my employer," begins a letter which came last January to Gambling with the Good Life, Nebraska’s grassroots anti-gambling non-profit since 1995. Nebraska’s bars, horsetracks, Keno parlors, and wanna-be slot machine distributors recently spent nearly a half a million dollars to get 126,753 Nebraska voters (who apparently didn’t notice that Council Bluffs raised property and sales taxes this year) to sign a constitutional amendment for "lower taxes." While their proposal could lead to 100,000 or more video slot machines across Nebraska (Council Bluffs has less than 5,000 slots), petition promoters said little about gambling and even less about the costs associated with the spread of gambling. And the costs of gambling are high.

Access management is a process that manages access to land development while seeking to preserve the flow of traffic on the surrounding road system. Sound access management practices can lead to safer roads that provide better service to motorists. In 1996, the Iowa Department of Transportation established an Access Management Task Force as part of its Safety Management System development effort. The Task Force is working with the

A Guide to Native American Studies Programs
in the United States and Canada
    Robert M. Nelson, Editor
Eight years ago, in the Fall of 1993, the Association for the Study of American Literatures published a 30-page guide to Native American Studies programs in the U.S., compiled and edited by former ASAIL President Franchot Ballinger. This new Guide to Native American Studies Programs in the United States and Canada represents an attempt to update and expand upon Professor Ballinger's pioneering work. In accordance with a 1995 ASAIL resolution, it is being published both in hardcopy form and in electronic form, so as to be available not only to ASAIL members but also to non-members, compliments of the Association. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of two SAIL Editorial Assistants, Amy Davidson (1995-96) and Corrie Anderson (1996-97), who in addition to their other duties put in many hours of overtime gathering and regathering, collating and recollating information from a variety of sources including questionnaires, follow-up letters and phone calls, and worldwide websites. Thanks also to Karen Strom at University of Massachusetts, who read the final draft of this guide and provided or corrected many of the URL addresses for program websites. Our dream was to provide a comprehensive survey of U.S. and Canadian Native American Studies programs being offered as majors, minors, and certifications at the baccalaureate level or above, using (with some slight modifications and additions) Professor Ballinger's earlier categories of information on each program. And although we have made a considerable effort to locate, contact, and acquire information about Native American Studies programs (by whatever title: Native American Studies and American Indian Studies are the most common designations, though there are others) at all North American baccalaureate-granting institutions, readers should keep in mind that the

    Who We Are
Iowa is a mid-western state located between the Mississippi and the Missouri rivers, west of Illinois and east of Nebraska. We are a state of culture and agriculture, blessed with fertile soil and a gently rolling terrain dotted with cities and towns of all sizes. And we are a state whose people come from many different backgrounds, folks who are proud of their traditions of fairness, opportunity and inclusiveness. Iowa is home to three State Regents institutions of higher learning, each providing first-rate education to students from all backgrounds and each with a history of support for diversity: Iowa State University is a public land-grant institution serving Iowa, the nation, and the world through programs of instruction, research, and extension. The University is located in Ames, Iowa, a medium sized town with all the entertainment opportunities offered by a major university along with the parks, bike paths and easy living offered by a smaller city. The enrollment of nearly 28,000 students is composed of about 83.8 percent white students, 9.6 international students, and 6.6 percent minority students. The current strategic plan at Iowa State includes diversity as a high priority, in student recruitment, retention, faculty hires, and awareness for the university community. ISU is proud to count George Washington Carver among its most distinguished alumni. In 1891, Carver became the first African American to enroll at Iowa State, receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees there and serving several years on the faculty before joining the faculty of the Tuskegee Institute.
