Research
Developmental and Cell Biology
Research is directed towards understanding cell motility and the nuclear and cytoskeletal aspects of fertilization. Pronuclear development is a pivotal period during fertilization, because the successful genetic reactivation of the dormant sperm nucleus and maternal chromatin by egg cytoplasm is essential for bipartental embryonic development. One project of the lab is to use an in vitro nuclear system to elucidate the factors regulating male pronuclear development at the cellular and molecular levels. Another area of research analyzes the role of the cytoskeleton in the fertilization process. These projects utilize fluorescence microscopy, video microscopy, and biochemical techniques. The object of these investigations is to gain an understanding of the nucleocytoplasmic interactions in cells.

... Community Engagement About Central Kitsap School District The Central Kitsap School District is located in Silverdale, Washington. The District serves about 13,200 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. Silverdale is located in the heart of the western Puget Sound region and is considered to be one of the most livable areas in the country. Central Kitsap offers a balanced lifestyle with easy access to Seattle and excellent recreational opportunities including saltwater and lake fishing, water and snow skiing, golfing, and boating in large protected waterways. Three Navy bases are the area’s major employers and impact Central Kitsap’s student population: the Naval Submarine Base, Bangor; the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport Division; and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton. Twenty-six percent of the District’s students are military family dependents and fifty percent are children of families economically dependent on the Navy. Bangor and Keyport provide a national and state award-winning partnership program supporting local schools. The District has two high schools serving Grades 10 to 12, one secondary school serving Grades 7 to 12, three junior high schools serving Grades 7 to 9, two alternative schools, fourteen elementary schools, and a home-school support program.

68. Weblogg-ed Vol.2: Using Weblogs In Education

Teach Web Logs? Use Web Logs.
Good news: working with a group of three teachers (Tom, the Web log veteran among them) who are using Manila sites for reader response work between two different classes. The idea is to get kids talking about the literature not only with their classmates but with a wider audience of readers. They are psyched to see the results. Bad news: as the two newbie teachers introduced the Web log concept to their kids, it became painfully obvious that they themselves had never even made a post much less kept a site. One of my proudest moments in journalism class is when I show my kids this site. I think most of them understand at that point that I'm not just on some trendy bandwagon but that I take it seriously. We need to make sure to add this strong suggestion (I hate rules) to the field manual: Teach writing, write. Teach reading, read. Teach writing or reading (or whatever else) with Web Logs...Blog! For most of us, it's a no brainer. In my case, this space had a lot to do with my "promotion" and my new adventures. I can't imagine where I would be without it.

Editor's Note: The following list is taken from an article by James E. Stice entitled "Habits of Highly Effective Teachers" in the November 1998 issue of ASEE Prism, a publication of the American Society of Engineering Education. Dr. Stice is the Bob R. Dorsey Professor of Engineering (Emeritus) at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1991, he and Richard Felder, a chemical engineering professor at North Carolina State University, created the National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI). Each year, it conducts an intensive three-day workshop on teaching fundamentals prior to ASEE's annual conference. Thanks to Howard Shapiro for forwarding the article.
  • Know what you're talking about. Many surveys have indicated that this is the most important factor in students' evaluation of teaching. Instructors may need to do more homework than their students.
  • Teach and lead by example. If teachers expect enthusiasm and curiosity from their students, then they need to model those behaviors.
  • Respect your students.
