Iowa: Geography Iowa is bordered on two sides by rivers; the Mississippi separates it on the east from Wisconsin and Illinois, and the Missouri and the Big Sioux separate it on the west from Nebraska and South Dakota. The state is bounded on the north by Minnesota and on the south by Missouri. Iowa is an area of rich, rolling plains, interrupted by many rivers. The terrain is low and gently sloping, except for the hills in the unglaciated area of NE Iowa, the steeply sloping bluffs on the banks of the Mississippi, and the moundlike bluffs on the banks of the Missouri. The rivers of the eastern two thirds of Iowa flow to the Mississippi; those of the west flow to the Missouri. The original woodlands, which included black walnut and hickory, were destroyed by lumbering and land clearing in the 19th century, and the present wooded sections are covered only with second or third growths of timber. Typical of Iowa is the prairie. Covered a little more than a century ago with grass higher than the wheels of the pioneers' prairie schooners, or covered wagons, the prairies are now covered with fields of corn and other grains. The wild flowers that once blossomed among the prairie grass still brighten the roadsides; however, few areas of the original grassland remain, and prairie grass preserves have been established. The former habitat of wild turkeys, prairie chickens, and quail, Iowa abounds with migratory geese and ducks and the imported ring-necked pheasant and European partridge, all of which are hunted in the autumn.

Bordered on the east by the Mississippi River and on the west by the Missouri River; Iowa is located in the "heartland of America" a region of four distinct seasons with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The deep, black topsoil provides a fertile resource for crop production. High temperatures in July average in the upper 80s F (26.6 c) and frequently reach 100 degrees F (37.7 c). Lows in January average between 10 to 20 degrees F (-12.2 to - 6.6 c), dropping at times below zero. Annual rainfall ranges from 26 inches (66 cm) in Northern Iowa to 36 inches (91.4 cm) in the southeast, with about 70 percent falling from April through September. Heavy snow often covers the state from January through March, with a yearly average snowfall of 50 inches (127 cm) in the north and 22 inches (55.8 cm) in the south. Iowa's seasons provide a wide range of temperature variation throughout the year and the climate is especially comfortable from mid-spring to early summer and again from late summer to late autumn.

Great Geography: Ten Lessons on the Internet
November 15-21 is Geography Awareness Week. In celebration of GAW '98, Education World highlights ten great geography lessons we found on the Internet. These lessons span the grades and the world with activities that involve maps, art, and culture. If you like what you see, explore additional activities among the collections from which these lessons come. Go "global" with the geography resources of the Web! Jo Lynn Cheramie, a fourth-grade teacher at Larose Middle School in Larose, Louisiana, has been incorporating the Internet into her classroom geography activities and learning some lessons of her own. Cheramie's class decided to try to collect a million pennies! She took charge of drumming up support for the student project via the Internet and, as the pennies rolled in, her students marked on a map the origin of each batch. Soon this ambitious project expanded to include the entire school. But, after a short period of time, when the flood of donations slowed to a trickle, Cheramie recognized that it was time to look for another geography project to complement this one. Although disappointed, she was undaunted. "I have joined another Internet project which we are doing everyday in my class," says Cheramie. "It is called

    Research Topic - Beginnings
In this section you will have the opportunity to investigate the geological makeup of the state from its beginnings dating from the Pleistocene period more than a million years ago. You will be able to study the glaciers that covered parts of Iowa and how they formed the land into the landscape that we have today. Among these many land forms is one that is only found here in Iowa and an area of China. This area is called the Loess Hills. If you so desire you might study the prehistoric wild life found in Iowa. Dinosaurs were not known as residents of Iowa but a new discovery points to a remote possibility of their presence. Many other exotic creatures were in Iowa and you can learn about and catalog these. You can begin your investigation with the links and print materials below.

Welcome to the Department of Geography Geography is the study of place or spacelooking at people and their environments. Course work in geography includes a lot more than map making! You can specialize in four areas; applied geography, which includes urban studies and regional planning; cartography and geographic information systems where you'll work with maps and computer analysis of geographic information; environmental studies which will help you understand human-environment interactions; and political/cultural geography where students study human society in the U.S. and other world areas. The department offers a Geography Major with Environmental Emphasis in addition to the general liberal arts Geography Major.
Geography offers opportunities in teaching at all educational levels plus it is a good basis for entering business administration, transportation and urban planning, or environmental impact assessment. Geographers also work in government and private business with job titles like land officer, international economist, intelligence officer, soil conservationist, or as writers and cartographers for publishers of maps, atlases, textbooks, and news and travel magazines.
