GEOGRAPHY/GLOBAL STUDIES THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA The Middle East Course Number: Credit: 3 undergraduate or graduate credits Tuition: $462 undergraduate, $732 graduate IOWA COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK Council Bluffs, Iowa School for the Deaf ICN Room 2, Careers Building and Atlantic Middle School Dates: January 22-May 14, 2003 Classes: Wednesday, 6:30-9 p.m. Enrollment Deadline: January 10, 2003 The events on and following September 11, 2001 and the developments that have followed highlight how little Americans know about the Middle East. This course is designed to enhance that understanding through an examination of the cultures (including religions, arts, languages, family structures and more), political economies, histories, resources, and conflicts in what is always a fascinating and often troubled part of the world. The course will take an expansive look at the Middle East from Morocco in the west, across North Africa, the Levant and the Arabian Peninsula, through Iraq and Iran to Afghanistan, and, of course, Pakistan. Among other issues, the course will deal with the origin and diffusion of Islam, Judaism and the Diaspora and Return, the politics and economics of water and oil, the impact of modernity, U.S. policy in the area, and a series of studies of regions within the Middle East. Guest lecturers will also provide perspectives and insights.

Algona Decorah Le Claire Sibley ... Shenandoah IOWA - Geography Midwestern state in the N central United States. It is bounded by the Mississippi R., across which lie Wisconsin and Illinois (E); Missouri (S); Nebraska and South Dakota, from which it is separated by the Missouri and the Big Sioux rivers, respectively (W); and Minnesota (N). Typical of Iowa is the prairie. Covered a little more than a century ago with grass higher than the wheels of the pioneers' prairie schooners, or covered wagons, the prairies are now covered with fields of corn and other grains. The wild flowers that once blossomed among the prairie grass still brighten the roadsides; however, few areas of the original grassland remain, and prairie grass preserves have been established. The former habitat of wild turkeys, prairie chickens, and quail, Iowa abounds with migratory geese and ducks and the imported ring-necked pheasant and European partridge, all of which are hunted in the autumn. Des Moines is the capital and largest city. Other major cities are Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Sioux City. Near Marquette is Effigy Mounds National Monument, site of Native American mounds built by the area's earliest inhabitants. Many state parks and forests provide recreational facilities.

Geography of the Byway The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway travels through the rugged landscape of windblown silt deposits along the Missouri River Valley. The steep, sharply ridged topography supports many rare plants and animals, many of which can only be found in the Loess Hills. This guide to the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway help to take you through Iowa's Loess Hills, county by county through the seven counties where the hills are located. The Loess Hills are located in seven western Iowa counties, including (traveling from north to south): Plymouth, Woodbury, Monona, Harrison, Pottawattamie, Mills, and Fremont. Traveling the Byway The main part of the route, also called the spine, is on paved roads, ranging from two-lane county highways to state highways and four-laned interstates. On the maps, the spine is always marked in dark blue. Excursion loops, marked in green, are a mix of gravel and paved roads. A few words of caution for those who have not driven much on gravel roads: stay to the right when going up hills take curves slower than usual, allow extra time to stop and don't speed because gravel doesn’t offer the best traction

Iowa Football Geography 101 Iowans are all too familiar with the confusion. Mention Iowa to some and you get “potatoes” and “Idaho.” Mention Iowa to others and you get “Ohio.” The University of Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, Associated Press’s college football coach of the year for 2002, has been doing his fair share of educating the world of college football as to the real home of the Hawkeyes and where exactly it fits geographically. Ferentz's work in orchestrating the Hawkeyes’ climb to the top of the Big Ten Conference and a date with Southern California in the 2003 FedEx Orange Bowl has gone a long way in also teaching geography to many talented high school football stars across the country. Ferentz, himself, though, has thrown an occasional curve when he talks about the present day Florida being the equivalent of New Jersey to the Hawkeye football program of the 1980s. The blank look on some of the faces at last Friday’s Iowa Hawkeye Orange Bowl Media Day was evidence enough of the confusion. Florida is like New Jersey to Iowa? It’s almost enough to make your fourth grade teacher shake her head in disbelief. But, Yes, Virginia, it’s true.
