The Impact of Vocational Education on Racial and Ethnic Minorities. ERIC/CUE Digest, Number 108.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC This digest analyzes information from two recently completed national surveys to determine the extent to which various vocational education programs improve the employment opportunities for ethnic and racial minorities in the United States. Since some vocational education programs include courses that prepare students to take the General Educational Development (GED) examination for high school equivalency, the impact of a GED certificate on workers' wages is also analyzed. The surveys on which this analysis is based are the 1992 National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) and the 1991 Workplace Literacy Assessment Survey. NALS, a national survey conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Educational Testing Service, sampled 14,900 adults aged 16 and older in the United States (with African Americans and Hispanics over-sampled). The overwhelming majority of the vocational education programs that persons in the NALS sample participated in were traditional ones with relatively little emphasis on academics.

Community Colleges, Vocational Schools Approximately 80% of AHS's graduates attend a four year college/university. While that number has stayed steady, the percentage of graduates opting to attend a community college or vocational school has increased. Nearly 15-20% of AHS graduates enroll in community colleges or vocational schools.
The advantages of community colleges as a transition to four year institutions and/or for career development can not be overstated. Ames High provides some very definite curriculum links to the future. Furthermore, opportunities exist at AHS to gain community college credit for taking particular high school courses in industrial technology, business, and family and consumer science.
Each of our courses can be grouped into a career cluster. Each career cluster has occupations with educational requirements ranging from on-the-job graining, apprentinceships, vocational/technical school, community college, four year college/university, or additional professional work after a degree program. Six major Career Pathways have been identified. They are: Arts and Communication, Agriscience and Natural Resources, Business/Information Management/Marketing, Engineering/Industrial/Technological Sciences, Family and Human Services, and Health Sciences. Your high school work provides an opportunity to learn about career opportunities.

Commander: Tom Ferguson
Here's your chance to tour the most technologically advanced and highly skilled fighting force in Iowa, from the safety of your own desktop. See some of the Iowa men and women that make it happen. And if you're so inclined, become one of them.
Key Features
Training in the "Ironman" Battalion
  • Training makes the difference. It's what turns an ordinary man or woman into a soldier. So whether their specialty is exiting helicopters at 1,300 feet or maneuvering as a member of a fire team, training helps them become the best they can be. Medicine

  • Army medics are trained to fix problems long before they reach the hospital. Telemedicine even allows him or her to perform minor emergency surgery, with the physician's long-distance supervision. A soldier who chooses a medical MOS may also be trained as a practical nurse, an X-ray, or respiratory specialist.
  • Signal Operations and Intelligence

  • The Army heads all the Military Satellite Communications for the Department of Defense. Signal Operations is the maintenance crew on the military's information superhighwayalong which travel "friendly" and, occasionally, enemy signals. Military Intelligence involves gathering information and composing battle strategies based on it. Soldiers in both Signal Operations and Intelligence have a vital role in information control and transmission in today's highly computerized Army.

Training in the "Ironman" Battalion
  • Training makes the difference. It's what turns an ordinary man or woman into a soldier. So whether their specialty is exiting helicopters at 1,300 fee or maneuvering as a member of a fire team, training helps soldiers develop skills and confidence they'll be able to use later on.

  • The National Guard has more than 200 Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) to choose from. And, as the Army becomes more technologically advanced, so does the training soldiers receive in their MOSs.
High-tech training makes our soldiers more marketable in an information-based society. Much of it is either directly transferable to a civilian career, or builds character traits that employers are looking for. So, basically, wherever a soldier wants to go in life, he or she can get there from here.

Our society is caught in an immense and potentially confusing hi-tech evolution. Exciting as this technology explosion is, schools are strained to find better ways to prepare students for many challenges they will face in their lives. The goal of Technology Education program at Valley Southwoods is to guide students in their learning about the multitude of technologies available and the skills needed to work in these fields. The program will allow students to use hands-on experiences to reinforce concepts learned in other areas, gain exposure to concepts and skills needed in technical areas, and develop skills as a self-directed learner working in a team setting. Students gain practical experience in using Computer Aided Instruction in the operation and application of high technology tools and systems. Back to top
