Archaeology of Historic Ireland 210ARL312 Introduction This module deals with the archaeology of Ireland during the medieval period. The early medieval period dates from the effects of the Late Roman Empire on Ireland until the reform of the Church and the incursions of the Anglo-Normans in the late 12th century and is commonly known as the early Christian period. The later medieval period deals with developments between the arrival of the Anglo-Normans and the sixteenth century. Although the module is concerned primarily with the archaeology of the period this cannot be considered in isolation from the available historical sources. Therefore, historical evidence will be continually used in our assessment and interpretation of the archaeology of the period. Reading material At present there is no general textbook available for the whole period and many of the most useful texts have recently gone out of print. Much of the reading for the course will consist of articles in periodicals, the titles of which will be given during lectures. Most periodicals are housed in the social collection of the main library and cannot be taken out on loan. Copies of some articles will be kept in the Archaeology office or the main office in Armagh where they can be borrowed for consultation. General reading Edwards, E. 1990. The archaeology of early mediaeval Ireland, Batsford (Alas, this has very recently gone out of print)

Archaeology Ireland, Autumn 1999 The densest concentration of wedge tombs is on the Burren in County Clare, and this, along with the density of other types of archaeological sites of a range of dates, including stone forts of early medieval date, is part of what makes the Burren such a very special landscape. Thomas Johnson Westropp (1860-1922) was the great pioneer in the survey and publication of the archaeology of the Burren (as well as of other areas). Archaeology of the Burren: prehistoric forts and dolmens in North Clare by T.J. Westropp ( CLASP Press , £19.95, hardback) is a very welcome compilation of articles on the Burren which originally appeared in The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland between 1895 and 1915. Develop a critical understanding of primary sources and secondary materials in two topics in one or more of the fields of archaeology, history, and literature
Regular contact with a practicing researcher in your chosen topics relating to medieval Scotland
Attain a level of expertise and knowledge which will enable you to embark on research at an advanced level Content For most students the course consists of two modules of supervised reading (one per term in terms 2 and 3). All students must take at least one. Exceptionally a student may be permitted to take an enhanced honours module (see below). The modules of supervised reading are based on eight individual/small group meetings held approximately once a week over terms 2 and 3. Each student will be assigned, after discussion with the degree programme organiser, a topic for each term that will be taught by a member of staff (or two members of staff) at a time convenient to both parties. At the first meeting for each module (in the first teaching week of the term) the student and their tutor(s) will draw up and agree a brief statement of anticipated outcomes. It is expected that students will take modules that are relevant to the topic they will be pursuing in their dissertation.

    The Archaeology of Ancient Ireland
Prehistoric Ireland. Little remains of Irish dwellings that predates the sixth century a.d. The abundance of wood and the difficulty of working stone with primitive tools undoubtedly accounts in part for this. In addition, the primitive farming practice of depleting the fields and then moving on to new ones made the laborious erection of a permanent stone dwelling unfeasible. Moreover, livestock constituted a major part of the wealth of the time, and the pasturing of flocks required considerable mobility, since the animals lived as foragers and were not, for the most part, fed grain from the laboriously worked fields. Furthermore, there were at that time no towns or even villages where artifacts might accumulate over a considerable period of time. At the most there were quasi-permanent encampments such as the royal sites of Cruachan and Emain Macha. Burial sites, however, are another matter. Court graves and passage graves can be found dating from as early 3,500 years b.c. ( Harbison 5-ff). A

Illinois State University, in conjunction with Sligo Folk Park, Riverstown

The Rural Ireland Lifeways Project began in 1994 and has conducted research every year since. Excavations have occurred on three tenant village sites in north County Roscommon. Over 150 students from universities and colleges throughout the US and Canada have collected over 10,000 artifacts, with the most intensive work being conducted at Ballykilcline (1998-2002).
The project is directed by Charles E. Orser, Jr., Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at Illinois State University and Adjunct Professor of Archaeology at the National University of Ireland, Galway. His books are A Historical Archaeology of the Modern World (Plenum, 1996); Images of the Recent Past: Readings in Historical Archaeology (editor, AltaMira, 1996); Historical Archaeology with Brian Fagan (HarperCollins, 1995), Race and the Archaeology of Identity (editor, University of Utah Press, 2001)

Publisher and online bookstore specializing in Irish archaeological and heritage publications, including the annual Excavations Bulletin, and archaeology ireland, a quarterly magazine aimed at the wider public.
    http://www.wordwellbooks.com/
Wordwell was established in 1986 as a publisher of books on Irish archaeology and heritage. In our first year we took over publication of the annual Excavations Bulletin , an invaluable resource for archaeologists, containing summary accounts of all the excavations in Ireland. In 1987 Wordwell published the first issue of Ireland's only quarterly archaeology magazine, Archaeology Ireland , many back issues of which are still available. Wordwell has recently acquired the quarterly History Ireland magazine, subscriptions to which can be ordered from this web site. (The main History Ireland web site contains sample articles, contents of back issues, events listings, resources and much more.) Wordwell is the primary distributor of the Iron Age journal Emania , as well as publications by and The Heritage Council . Our website also presents books by other publishers that we hope will be of interest. The number of new Wordwell titles is increasing each year, to include books on architecture, history and crafts, and antiquarian maps, as well as specialist archaeology books.
