of the Ages Irish Interest: Find your Surname History: Ireland has a rich heritage and the influnce of its culture has been felt the
world over, probably more than any other, from music, art, myths, language, food and literature. For a very long time, with no newspapers, radio or TV, news and events were put to music and relayed by the Bards that travelled the land. A Bard was always welcome, as his music and poetry was entertaining as well as bringing news of what was happening throughout the country side. Prior to the arrival of the sons of King Milesius (Milidh) the mythological tribes in Ireland were said to include the Partholonians , the Nemedians , the Fomorians Fir Bolgs and the Tuatha de Danann . Stories of these people as well as much about the early centuries of Ireland's past have been passed down through time in the form of various annals, the 'Annals of the Four Masters' among the more prominent of these pseudo-historical accounts of ancient Hibernia (Eire, Ireland). Serious scholars have always held that Ireland's history is not truly knowable before about 500 AD. The original waves of Celtic language immigration have been variously placed in a large window from 2000 to 300 BC, with many citing the time around 500BC. The author T.F. O'Rahilly proposes 4 major Celtic invasions of Ireland:

Ireland
Culture
U2 may be Ireland's loudest cultural export, but of all the arts, the Irish have had the greatest impact on literature. If you took all the Irish writers off the university reading lists for English Literature the degree course could probably be shortened by a year. Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, W B Yeats, Samuel Beckett and James Joyce are just some of the more famous names. Joyce is regarded as the most significant writer of literature in the 20th century, and the topographical realism of Ulysses still draws a steady stream of admirers to Dublin, bent on retracing the events of Bloomsday. It's possible to add at least a couple of dozen more contemporary names to this heady brew, though it might be argued that the more spectacular highlights are JP Donleavy's The Ginger Man ; Brendan Behan's Borstal Boy , Roddy Doyle's 1993 Booker Prize winner Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha , Patrick Macabe's brilliantly disturbing The Butcher Boy and anything with the word 'peat' in it written by the poet Seamus Heaney.

Understanding the history of Ireland allows for a deeper appreciation of the ancient monuments found there today, as well as reasons for the heartache of contemporary disputes. The story of Ireland is an ancient tale, older than the pyramids of Egypt, and full of more turmoil, upheaval, and romance than any daytime drama.

    Irish Theatre
William Butler Yates and Isabella Augusta Persse, Lady Gregory founded the Irish Literary Theatre in 1899. Its purpose was to foster Irish poetic drama. However, nationalism grasped the country, and these literary figures began staging native-born plays. This literary endeavor became the National Theatre Society and its home became the Abbey Theatre. Other literary greats who contributed their talents as directors and dramatists included J.M. Synge and A.E. (George Russell). Irish history was the theme of many of the productions in the early years. After World War I there were topics on Northern Ireland, the 1916 Easter Rising and geography of a divided Ireland. Lady Gregory, in her writings, worked at revising the Victorian images of Ireland as a land of 'buffoones', of blarney-speaking, whiskey-swilling, stage Irishmen. The Celtic Revival was a return to the Irish language and mythology. There was a hunger for culture in music and linguistics. The 1890s were a crucial period for the reclamation of cultural Ireland. Stories and plays were written about figures in Ireland's past such as CuChulainn, and the Ulster cycle.

    Irish Culture
    Derived From the Ancient Celts

The Irish people are famous for their optimism in the face of hardship, and their unmatched hospitality. Irish culture is joyful - expressed through numerous cultural festivals, including an international film festival, a jazz festival, and a folk music festival in Cork; and theatre festivals in Dublin. Wexford has an opera festival, concentrating on the lesser-known operas. Many towns have annual arts festivals, including visual art, music, poetry, and prose writing, including the awarding of prizes and the sharing of artistic efforts. Dozens of other festivals and holidays are celebrated each year throughout the country, including of course, St. Patrick's Day.
Many contemporary Irish celebrations have their origins in elaborate pagan Celtic ceremonies. Through the years, Christian influences changed the meanings and practices of these early customs, but many of the dates and core traditions remain. Irish Art and Music
The origins of Irish art are obscure, dating back to perhaps as early as 3,000 BC in tombs and sanctuaries along the

The title of European Capital of Culture is within Belfast's grasp according to Northern Ireland Culture Minister Michael McGimpsey. He was speaking as he welcomed the eight-strong judging panel to the Odyssey centre in Belfast on Monday. Mr McGimpsey said: "There is no avoiding the fact that the image of Belfast that has recently been on television screens throughout the UK has been one of violence and confrontation. But there is much more to our city and our province than that." Michael McGimpey: "We are front-runners in this bid"
The panel includes Sir Jeremy Issacs as chairman and Sue McGregor and Judith Mayhew as vice chairs. Belfast is seen as one of the favourites to win the title and the minister's welcome is being seen as the final push for Imagine Belfast, the team responsible for the city's bid. Hilary McGrady, the chief executive of Imagine Belfast, said the judges had been impressed.

    By Maggie Taggart
BBC Northern Ireland arts correspondent There was a feeling of shock, of disbelief even, when the announcement came to the Imagine Belfast office that its bid in the Capital of Culture contest had failed. A fax was delivered saying Belfast had not been shortlisted, despite having been heavily tipped by pundits and bookies over the last few months . They had planned a breakfast party and insisted that they didn't mind if they won or lost, but in the event, few had an appetite for the croissants, and the champagne glasses waiting on trays behind the scenes, remained unfilled. The newly arrived Minister for Culture, Angela Smith, had known in advance and broke the news to the chairman of the campaign, but she said she had not been able to influence the judging panel which rejected Belfast's bid. 'Pipe dream' However, some are more cynical saying the Labour government could afford to ignore a Northern Ireland city's bid, because it doesn't need to canvas for votes in the province.

Ireland: Literary Tradition and Cultural Identity
Since earliest times the personality of Ireland has been marked by a capacity to assimilate a variety of influences while retaining a distinctive island character. Questions of identity and the fluctuating history of our relationship with Britain and the European Mainland arise constantly against a backdrop of social change and political adjustment. The 53rd International Summer School explores Irish society and its diverse heritage through the lenses of modern scholarship, 20th century literature and contemporary political debate. The Sumnmer School Our 2-week programme will examine Irish culture and tradition through a wide spectrum of topics, covering Art, Archaeology, Folklore, Literature, Theatre, Music, History and Politics. The course will provide new insights for students already familiar with Ireland, but is equally accessible to the newcomer. Lectures and seminars will be complemented by visits, field tours and musical events. Lectures will be given by Faculty members of international renown and by distinguished guest speakers from the Arts and public life in Ireland. It is intended to hold a panel discussion on Northern Ireland, with representatives from diverse shades of political opinion. Participants come from a wide range of backgrounds and countries, from 18 to 80. About half of them have English as their first language (you need a good knowledge of English to follow lectures and get the most from the excellent social life).

The Official Website for the Northern Ireland Tourist Board What's On Your quick reference guide to upcoming events. All arts in all parts ONE OF OUR many distinguished writers once described Northern Ireland as "a great country, just pretending to be small." That's certainly true, not only in terms of our own rich cultural heritage but also the disproportionate contribution that our people have made to world culture. For countless centuries this little country, just the size of Connecticut, has been a powerhouse of cultural and artistic endeavour of remarkable continuity, longevity and, above all, diversity. This is, after all, the Land of Finn McCool as well as St Patrick; a place where warriors were also bards; a country shared by both the Gael and the Planter; a land of imaginative writers as well as inventive geniuses. It's the birthplace of the Titanic, the Tyre and the Tractor as well as being the inspiration of Sir John Lavery, Seamus Heaney and Van Morrison. Today's visitors can soon touch the spirit of this place in a way that you cannot in other destinations. The arts and culture are always around you, alive and easily accessible everywhere. Just look at what you could do in the course of a day. Spend the morning exploring a Celtic Church that was once the beacon of enlightenment that continued to shine through Europe's Dark Ages; pay an afternoon visit to a gallery showing the best of contemporary Irish art; and then enjoy an Ulster Orchestra concert followed by a nightcap in a convivial pub where our storytelling tradition is vibrant.
