The Church of Ireland
Genealogy and Family History
The archives of the Church of Ireland, and particularly parochial registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials, are a primary source for genealogists and family historians. Although many registers were destroyed in the past, especially in the fire in the Public Record Office of Ireland in 1922, many others have survived in a number of custodies and are available to researchers. The staff of the RCB Library will be glad to offer advice on all queries concerning Church of Ireland archives and manuscripts and related printed and reference works. It should be stressed, however, that they will not undertake genealogical research on behalf of readers.
If you have any genealogical queries, please contact the RCB Library - Email: - in the first instance, NOT the Hostmaster of this web site.
Survival of Parish Registers
Almost half of the surviving registers were destroyed in 1922 and others have been lost at earlier periods. However, much of the lost information survives in transcripts and abstracts. The most recent published listing of parish registers is Noel Reid (ed)

A (much) Smaller Social History of Ancient Ireland
Check the latest updates The old Irish writers commonly prefixed to their books or treatises a brief statement of "Place, Time, Person and Cause". The Place, Time, Person and Cause of Writing of these web pages are:- Their place is Cuskinny, Cobh, County Cork, Ireland; their time is the year of our lord one thousand nine hundred and ninety seven; the author is Brian Walsh; and the cause of writing is to give knowledge to those who desire to learn about the Old Irish People. These pages are based around information in an old book that I came across. Why is an old book more interesting than a modern study? Could it be that learning about our history has more to do with trying to understand a slightly alien culture rather than simply reading a set of facts/opinions. Everything about an old book - the style of presentation and prose, the texture of the pages and the binding, and the smell - is an aid to making that mental leap which can aid understanding. These pages are not a verbatim republication of the original. They take their structure and core data from the contents of the book. Entire pages may be summarised as a set of comments or omitted altogether. Material will be added gradually as links from the table of contents below.

CHAPTER V - PAGANISM.
1. Druids: their Functions and Powers
Druidism
All the early colonists had their druids, who are mentioned as holding high rank among kings and chiefs. There were druids also in Gaul and Britain; but the Gaels of Ireland and Scotland were separated and isolated for many centuries from the Celtic races of Gaul; and thus their religious system, like their language, naturally diverged, so that the druidism of Ireland, as pictured forth in the native record differed in many respects from that of Gaul. In pagan times the druids were the exclusive possessors of whatever learning was then known. They combined in themselves all the learned professions: they were not only druids, but judges prophets, historians, poets, and even physicians, There were druids in every part of Ireland, but, as we might expect, Tara, the residence of the over-kings of Ireland, was, as we are told in the Life of St. Patrick, "the chief seat of the idolatry and druidism of Erin." The druids had the reputation of being great magicians; and in this character they figure more frequently and conspicuously than in any other. In some of the old historical romances we find the issues of battles sometimes determined not so much by the valour of the combatants as by the magical powers of the druids attached to the armies. Perhaps the most dreaded of all the necromantic powers attributed to them was that of producing madness. In the pagan ages, and down far into Christian times, madness was believed to be often brought on by malignant magical agency, usually the work of some druid. For this purpose the druid prepared a "madman's wisp," that is, a little wisp of straw or grass, into which he pronounced some horrible incantations, and, watching his opportunity, flung it into the face of his victim, who at once became insane or idiotic.

Professor Peter Holmes of London believes that the first Bronze horns could have been cast in the North East of Ireland about 1500 B.C. These were quite small, relatively heavy and not highly decorated. Gradually as the culture surrounding them spread South through the Island, so too the casting expertise improved until the youngest instruments were made in the South West around 800 B.C. Because of this gradual evolvement, a wide variety of shape, design and size of horn were made. It appears that certain particular designs and tuning were indicative of the area where an instrument was made. Because a large number of originals survive it is likely that there were many horns played throughout Ireland in the Late Bronze Age. As a fragment was found in West Scotland and a drawing comes from Sussex in England it is also quite possible that a sibling culture existed there and there was most likely interaction between the two Islands.

by The Honourable Robert Ruadh of the Isles
The harp played by the Irish and Scottish harpers of the old Gaelic order was an aristocratic instrument, played in the courts of kings and before the chiefs of clans. It was much like other non-pedal harps in use in our own time, but differs in that it was strung with bronze wire rather than gut or nylon. Its sound-box was carved in one piece out of wood from the bog. It had other-worldly associations, and in the hands of a master harper had power over its listeners to bring them great joy, or cause them to weep with sorrow, or lull them to sleep. History of harp development The earliest images we have of harps come from Mesopotamia, the Ægean, and Egypt. On Mesopotamian clay tablets dated to 2800 BC a simple carving of a three-stringed harp is used as a pictographic sign. Images of musicians with harps appeared at an even earlier date on seals and limestone plaques. Wooden statuette of musician with an angled harp. Egypt, 750-656 B.C. British Museum, London. These ancient harps had a variety of shapes and sizes, but generally were either built from a sound-box and string-arm joined at an angle or on a bow-shaped or arched frame.

    Ireland
History Historically Ireland has not proven to be a very successful location for exploration. Activity has been hindered by the lack of success and by high cost. Over the last four years there have been only five exploration wells offshore Ireland. This compares with close to 256 exploration wells in the UK. In addition, there are only two production platforms in Ireland compared to approximately 293 in the UK. The Irish Gas Market The Irish gas market is relatively small. On average the UK would consume the entire gas output from the Ballycotton gas field off Cork every three days. However, Ireland's demand for gas is expanding rapidly with annual average demand of 350 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd). This is forecast to rise to 480 mmscfd by 2005.
Ireland's sole source of indigenous gas from Kinsale is in decline and imports are growing in importance (78 per cent of Ireland's needs were met by imports in 1998). Gas demand is driven by the need to increase electricity-generating capacity and to fuel existing capacity in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Natural gas is increasingly the fuel of choice in Ireland and new sources of indigenous gas will contribute significantly to the country's diversity and security of gas supply.
