Irises
In both my garden and the Devonian Botanic Garden Irises have done very well this year in spite of the weather. During June into this month they have flowered well. The genus Iris is a large genus of bulbous and rhizomatous perennials. Some 300 species and countless cultivars exist. The species are native to northern temperate regions. In Greek mythology Iris was a sister of the Harpies, messenger of the Juno, goddess of marriage. Iris walked between heaven and earth over a bridge made by a rainbow. Legend has it that whenever she walked on earth, her footprints bore flowers with as many colours as the rainbow. The name Iris as a Greek noun means rainbow. Irises were grown in the east long before the Christian era. A flower on the sphinx is considered to be an Iris, and another appears on a bas-relief of the time of the 18th Egyptian dynasty. Pliny also knew the Iris and praised its medicinal virtues. The Iris was also a favourite flower of the Moslems, who took it to Spain after their conquest in the 8th century.

Bog Gardening A POND is not an essential feature of the bog garden, although its presence is to be desired when you can use the overflow to feed a marsh. It is essential, that the soil of the marsh garden be kept in a moist, swampy state through out year. The site of the bog garden must, naturally, be low-lying and where the surface drainage will naturally collect. If the subsoil is of sticky clay, a mere trickle of water will keep the ground in a sufficiently moist condition. Should the subsoil be light and well drained, a certain amount of excavation will be necessary before the bog garden can be made. Constructing the Bog Garden Selecting the Plants Only a sound knowledge of the habits and rate of growth of the plants introduced and a clear visualization of the picture one is endeavouring to produce can ensure success in this exceedingly difficult matter of planting for future effect.

Iridaceæ
Some internet discussion of this hybrids: From Jan Smithen in New Zealand , 18 Apr 1999, on Medit-Plants
"I want to second what Loren says about transplanting or dividing Pacific Coast Native Iris (PCNs). I killed several before I learned, they MUST only be disturbed at the beginning or during their active growth period. And like so many California natives, this is during our winter rainy season.
"You'll find that after yours have been in the ground for a few years, they'll spread out and develop empty centers. You'll be tempted to divide them as soon as bloom is finished. They are now entering dormancy and have almost no roots at all!
"As Loren suggested, wait until mid to late October, and you'll see little fans of new growth developing around the outside edges. If you dig down with your fingers, you'll see white roots sprouting from pink bases on the thin rhizome.
"With a fork, lift the whole clump and break it apart at its natural separations with your hands. Keep the divisions damp in the shade while you re-dig and amend the soil. Then replant your divisions at the same level they were before. Blooming does not depend on the size or age of the clump and your new divisions will generously bloom the following spring. They like light shade with plenty of reflected light, good loose humusy soil on the acid side and fairly good drainage, plenty of moisture during fall, winter and spring, and to be dry during the summer. You can lose them during the summer in warm(hot?) wet soil due to water mold fungi.

That bloomin' iris With some planting, you can have a year-round rainbow of color Iris are irrestibly intoxicating to Norfolk gardener JaNiece Mull. She's quick tell anyone that iris are among the most misunderstood flowers in the garden. "One of the most asked questions is 'Why should I grow iris? They don't last very long and they are hard to take care of.' "Wrong, wrong," says JaNiece. "Here in Tidewater you can have iris bloom at least nine if not 11 months of the year. You need to do some planning; however, you can have a rainbow of color almost all year long." More perennials Scabiosa at a glance
