Iris, rose lovers show off blooms this weekend
Las Vegas has finally arrived. You have your choice of two free flower shows this weekend. The Las Vegas Iris Society will host its "Iris Jewels of the Earth" show at the Nevada Garden Club Center, 3333 W. Washington Ave. in the northwest corner of Lorenzi Park, 1-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Las Vegas Valley Rose Society is sponsoring its rose show and sale at the Desert Demonstration Gardens, 3701 Alta Drive, 1-5 p.m. Saturday. Along with the beautiful exhibits, the society is selling miniature roses. The miniatures sold out last year, so come early to get your cuties. In addition, the 2002 All-American Rose Winners will be on display. Society members at both shows will be available to answer your gardening questions. For more information, call 871-0152 about the iris show and 646-6048 about the rose show. Because roses are such a hot item this time of year, the Desert Demonstration Gardens will have two additional classes on roses. At 6:30 p.m. today, Lee Heenan will take you through the history of roses and then serve you some "rosy" refreshments. At 11 a.m. Saturday, rosarians will tour the roses at the gardens and emphasize maintenance and water-saving tips best in our climate. Here are some tips about irises and roses.

Welcome to Sun Country Iris Society
    Basic Iris Care

Since our summers have high temperatures and the winters are fairly mild, it is best to plant the rhizomes (root or tubers) in October when the thermometer stays below 100 degrees. You may prepare the soil before then (good drainage is important) and sunny location is nice. Set the rhizomes with their tops just beneath the soil surface, then water well. Root growth should occur during the winter so water sparingly. When new growth occurs water regularly until about six weeks after the flowers fade. Increases and buds for the following year are formed during this period. During the summer, established plantings can get by on less frequent watering. If the clumps become crowded (after 3 or 4 years) it is time to dig and divide, otherwise the number of stems and the quality of the flowers will decrease. Fertilizing should begin in February and continue every two weeks until after the bloom. A heavier dose can be given after the bloom in spring, when planting in the fall. Why Join the Sun Country Iris Society?

Greetings to deliberate or casual visitors. This is the first airing of what I hope will be a series of illustrated pages broadly centred on the topic of gardening. Over the years I have accumulated a number of photos of plants, gardens and garden-related subjects. With the sudden, unexpected offer of free webspace by my service provider, it seemed the ideal opportunity to share some of these. The collection (alright - there's only one topic there as yet) is eclectic. They are subjects that have caught my eye at one time or another, or which have interested me for some time. Welcome to the ragbag.
Let's not waste bandwidth - it's Japanese Irises
Over the next six months, I hope to add bamboos, alpine plants, some unusual species irises and half-hardy bulbs. Beyond that, it would be good to add foliage elements in garden design, Andean climbing plants.... several pages on half-hardy bulbs are nearing completion right now.

A New Generation
Of Irises Gets Glitzy
By E ILEEN W HITE R EAD
Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal From The Wall Street Journal Online Sheryl T. Moore dug up hundreds of "boring old irises" in her Harrah, Okla., garden to make way for 60 flashy new varieties. The patterned, tricolored newcomers with names like "Baboon Bottom" and "Gnu Blues" will be "show-stoppers" in the garden, says Ms. Moore. "You don't have to walk up to within two feet of the plants to see the flowers." Welcome to the colorful new palette of irises. Recent hybrids and their lofty prices have shaken up the once-grandmotherly world of the pallid perennial. Summer's dog days are always a high season for iris fans: Gardeners seize upon the high heat for planting. While it's too hot for most flora, irises' tough roots crave baking soil and sun.
