Path to peace runs through a history of tumult
For centuries the Middle East has been a site of conflict over land sacred to Christians, Muslims and Jews.
And while the echoes of the older conflict still ring in the crashing stones and staccato gunfire of the current dispute, an understanding of the conflict's history cannot undo decades of mistrust and animosity between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The Creation of History in Ancient Israel
    Marc Zvi Brettler
Routledge 1995 A book review by Danny Yee Neither a futile attempt to prove that the Old Testament is accurate history or a pointless demonstration that it fails by the standards of modern historians, The Creation of History in Ancient Israel is instead a study of what the biblical authors were trying to do with their presentations of the past; an understanding of this is a prerequisite to any attempt to use the biblical accounts to reconstruct the history of Israel. Brettler gives a brief overview of modern biblical historiography in his introduction. He goes on, in chapter one, to suggest definitions of "history" and "ideology" that are useful for the purpose at hand, but argues that "literature" is not a term that can usefully be applied to biblical texts. Chapter two uses Chronicles to introduce the complexities of Old Testament historiography: the Chronicler is one of the few biblical historians who can be seen "in action", because his sources (earlier parts of the Bible) are available. Brettler presents a detailed study of 1 Chr 15:1-26 (David's transfer of the Ark from Gibeah to Jerusalem) which highlights the ways in which the Chronicler's rewriting and reordering of his source materials reflects his own purposes and the historical and political situation in which he wrote. Like modern historians he uses "historical probability" - albeit in a pre-modern form - to evaluate and "correct" his sources.

As the periodic bloodshed continues in the Middle East, the search for an equitable solution must come to grips with the root cause of the conflict. The conventional wisdom is that, even if both sides are at fault, the Palestinians are irrational "terrorists" who have no point of view worth listening to. Our position, however, is that the Palestinians have a real grievance: their homeland for over a thousand years was taken, without their consent and mostly by force, during the creation of the state of Israel. And all subsequent crimes - on both sides - inevitably follow from this original injustice. This paper outlines the history of Palestine to show how this process occurred and what a moral solution to the region's problems should consist of. If you care about the people of the Middle East, Jewish and Arab, you owe it to yourself to read this account of the other side of the historical record.

Sometime in the late 1950s, that world-class gossip and occasional historian, John F. Kennedy, told me how, in 1948, Harry S. Truman had been pretty much abandoned by everyone when he came to run for president. Then an American Zionist brought him two million dollars in cash, in a suitcase, aboard his whistle-stop campaign train. 'That's why our recognition of Israel was rushed through so fast.' As neither Jack nor I was an antisemite (unlike his father and my grandfather) we took this to be just another funny story about Truman and the serene corruption of American politics.
Unlikely, because no other minority in American history has ever hijacked so much money from the American taxpayers in order to invest in a 'homeland'. It is as if the American taxpayer had been obliged to support the Pope in his reconquest of the Papal States simply because one third of our people are Roman Catholic. Had this been attempted, there would have been a great uproar and Congress would have said no. But a religious minority of less than two per cent has bought or intimidated seventy senators (the necessary two thirds to overcome an unlikely presidential veto) while enjoying support of the media.

    [From Z Magazine , May 2002]
    Background to the Israel-Palestine Crisis
    by Stephen R. Shalom
What are the modern origins of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? During World War I, Britain made three different promises regarding historic Palestine. Arab leaders were assured that the land would become independent; in the Balfour declaration, Britain indicated its support for a Jewish national home in Palestine; and secretly Britain arranged with its allies to divide up Ottoman territory, with Palestine becoming part of the British empire. Historians have engaged in detailed exegesis of the relevant texts and maps, but the fundamental point is that Britain had no moral right to assign Palestine to anyone: by right Palestine belonged to its inhabitants. In the late years of the 19th century, anti-Semitism became especially virulent in Russia and re-emerged in France. Some Jews concluded that only in a Jewish state would Jews be safe and thus founded Zionism. Most Jews at the time rejected Zionism, preferring instead to address the problem of anti-Semitism through revolutionary or reformist politics or assimilation. And for many orthodox Jews, especially the small Jewish community in Palestine, a Jewish state could only be established by God, not by humans. At first Zionists were willing to consider other sites for their Jewish state, but they eventually focused on Palestine for its biblical connections. The problem, however, was that although a Zionist slogan called Palestine "a land without people for a people without land," the land was not at all empty.
