Colloquium Structure
Timings and groupings are based on total available time of around 7 hours and may be modified subject to on-the-ground arrangements.

  • 2. Landscapes, site location and surveys (2 hrs)
    3. Regional reviews and CRM (1hr 45)
With the exception of keynote speakers, each session will consist of short verbal introductions (5 minutes per speaker), a poster viewing period, and a round table discussion of the issues addressed in the posters for that session. Posters are nominally 100 x 70cm, according to the congress secretariat. This is rather small for a normal poster. We will aim to keep posters up throughout the colloquium, but if necessary we will swap displays at lunch time so that everyone can have two 100 x 70 cm spaces.
Colloquium Program as at 26th June 1996

    • The Italian urbanism project , with T.J. Cornell (University of Manchester): This project, based at UCL from 1989-94, investigated the development of urban centres in Italy from their first emergence to the end of the Roman Empire, and examined aspects such as the earliest development of cities in Italy, the impact of the Roman conquest and subsequent processes of Romanization, and the development of urban society in the Late Republic and Early Empire. Monographs of aspects of this project have been published by both participants, as have a series of three co-edited volumes of conference papers. The main output, a major collection of data on urban development is at an advanced stage of preparation and a further book, on the development of urban society in archaic Italy, is in progress.

Ruth D. Whitehouse (ed). ISBN 1 873415 18 4 This volume, published jointly by the Accordia Research Institute and the Institute of Archaeology, UCL, has its origins in a seminar held at the Institute in May 1995. The seminar was prompted by the contrast between the growth of gender studies in world archaeology and the absence of any work of this type in Italy and produced a lively discussion and interchange of ideas. The volume includes revised versions of most of the seminar papers and some additional papers by authors working on aspects of gender archaeology in Italy who had been unable to attend the seminar. Papers contained within this volume include: The Italian Scene: approaches to the study of gender
    M. Carmen Vida (Birkbeck College, London) Italian gender theory and archaeology: a political engagement
Mary Baker (University of Southampton) Representations of gender in prehistoric southern Italy

The Archaeology and Art of Roman Italy in the Late Republic and Early Empire
This course examines the material remains of Italian society in terms of their contribution to our understanding of a well-documented historical period and as cultural objects worthy of study in their own right. Amongst the topics explored are Romanisation, the uses of imagery for political and social advantage, town life, the villa system of agriculture and craft production, as well as developments in the major arts (especially sculpture and painting) and architecture. The value of new approaches to the study of patterns of settlement and trade is also assessed.
The sites, monuments and artefacts of Rome, Ostia, Pompeii, Herculaneum and Cosa and their surrounding regions provide the principle sources of evidence. Attention is also given to northern Italy, the Samnite uplands and the deep south, to illustrate the diversity of the peninsula and its response to political, social and economic change.
Students choose to answer a majority of either art-related or site-related questions in the examination. An awareness of problems of method and chronology is expected, although the emphasis of the course is on the application of evidence rather than techniques of recovery and analysis. The use of relevant literary and epigraphic evidence is encouraged. Opportunities are given to handle objects in the Ashmolean Museum.
