When the fully enlightened teachers do not appear and when the disciples have disappeared, the wisdom of the self-enlightened ones will arise completely without a teacher. - Naagaarjuna's Mulamaadhyamaka Kaarikaa (2nd century CE) Introduction Everything has a reason - or atleast that is the basic assumption underlying philosophy itself and the quest for that reason is the fundamental objective of the science. So the first thing to consider : the reason for developing this website. What causes even more concern is that there was hardly any protest voiced against the unfounded assertion of the columnist. But again there's little reason for surprise as the vast majority of 'educated' Indians have very little knowledge of the intellectual and spiritual underpinnings of their own culture. Due to the motivated brainwashing of the colonialists and their Indian successors - the Marxists - who have strategically well entrenched themselves in the institutes of both education and media, the modern Indian grows up viewing his own culture as "primitive and backward" and looks up to and apes the culture of the West, without realizing that such practice effectively renders him devoid of substance psychologically and gradually gives rise to an inferiority complex thus sapping his creative juices. Even more important it robs him of the benefits - cultural and spiritual - of belonging to a millennia old civilization. For if endurance can be used as a criterion to judge the vitality of a civilization, then the Indian civilization comes out with top marks as it has survived the ravages of time and often against insurmountable odds. While its age old peers - the Egyptian, the Mesopotamian, the Greek, the Roman, the Chinese civilizations - have all perished (in our view the Chinese civilization is also a thing of the past as its peoples have abandoned the teachings of Confucious and Lao Tze and embraced the ideology of Marx and Engels), the Indian Civilization still holds out against the onslaught of time, it inner flame burning pure and true.

23. History Of India - Ancient : Hinduism And Transition
Briefly describes the period between 600 B.C to 322 B.C. offering some opinions about the origins of Buddhism and jainism and the evolution of Hinduism through teachings of Shankaracharya.
http://www.historyofindia.com/hinduism.html
Hinduism had become much more than a religion; it was a way of life . Caste was the social manifestation of the underlying Hindu concept of reincarnation causality and duty
The four original castes split up over the ages into myriads of subcastes . There was an elaborate system of precedence by which each group had a place above and below other groups. This was accepted due to the belief in reincarnation by which one was born into a particular group as a result of the reward or punishment for one's action in a previous life. Brahmins dominated over other the castes. The way of life of individuals was based on their birth and there was increase in ritualism and sacrifice
But, there were rebels against ritual, sacrifice and above all, against caste . Hinduism saw it's first rebel in Mahavira who founded Jainism and Gautam Buddha who founded Buddhism
Shankara
Buddhism disappeared from India by the 12th century AD. Perhaps the Buddha's ideas were taken over by the great Hindu philosopher Shankaracharya in the ninth century AD, and were readapted to Hinduism, so as to make Buddhism no longer necessary. Whatever the reason, the

Jainism Potpourri A Brief Introduction to Jainism First Online: April 01,2001
Last Updated : February 16,2003 Along with Buddhism, Jainism is the most important reform movement to separate from the main body of Hinduism and establish an independent unit. The word is derived from Jina ("Victor," or "Conqueror") implying final victory over bondage to life's misery. Jainism has the universal message of nonviolence. The absence of a creator god in Jainism can be understood as a reaction against the nature worship of early Vedic religion, the priestly order of Brahmanism, and the theology of the Upanishads. Jain arts and architecture has enriched the artistic heritage of India. Jainism was founded by Rishabha, and attained a major status in India at the time of Mahavira , who was born in about 599 B.C. in Northern India, in the town of Vyshali, in the present day Bihar , in a royal family. When he was about 30 years old, after he had been a householder, Mahavira decided to abandon his aristocratic surroundings in favor of an ascetic life. He cast aside his fine raiment, gave away his treasures, and embarked upon a severe regimen. For twelve years he underwent castigation, enduring bodily and spiritual injury, and emerged a teacher of many monks, a renowned preacher, and a profounder of a new religion. Chief among the tenets of Jainism is the deification of Mahavira. The

Up Are we on the Right Path? What you believe... you can achieve ... Jainism in the 21st Century [ Vegetarianism - A synonym for Ahimsa? ] Temples in Jain Philosophy Let us Learn to Forgive... Truly! Jain Education Revisited Are women "Impure" during their menstrual cycle? ... Jain Education in the Digital Age These days it appears that we have mistaken Ahimsä as a synonym for Jainism and Vegetarianism as a synonym for Ahimsä. Hence a person, who is vegetarian considers himself or herself a true Jain; and thus has the right to condemn anyone who is not a vegetarian!!! Let us first examine who Jains are: “Jains are followers of JINA, the conqueror of inner enemies”. These inner enemies are anger , greed , pride and deceit. These arise out of attachment (räg) leading to greed and pride, and aversion (dvesh) leading to deceit and anger. Now let us examine some fundamental teaching of Jainism: Ahimsä (Non-violence), Anekäntaväda (Multiplicity of viewpoints), Syädaväda (Relativism,Satya (Truth), Achurya (Not stealing) and Aparigraha (Non-possessiveness). Ahimsä or Non-violence is just one part of the Jain teachings and is based on love and kindness for all forms of life, as Jains believe that all life forms (Plants and animals) are equal, have souls and are capable of attaining salvation.

Glimpses of the January 2003 Issue Quotations from scriptures: Acharya Umaswati's TATTVAARTH SUTRA is a systematic and comprehensive presentation of the principles of Jainism. As the name implies, it is a brief treatise on TATTVAs - aspects of reality, which include living beings (JEEVs), non-living entities (AJEEVs), influx of karmic matter (AASHRAV), binding of karmic matter (BANDH), stoppage of karmic influx (SAMVAR), shedding of karmic matter (NIRJARA) and liberation (salvation MOKSHA).
Quotations From Acharya Umaswati's TATTVAARTH SUTRA
This aphorism (SUTRA 1-4) represents the sum and substance of Jain metaphysics. It states that there are two kinds of entities in the universe - living and non-living. Further, the interactions between these two entities take place according to the laws of nature - directed by their respective intrinsic attributes, and without the interference of any supernatural entity. In fact, there is no supernatural entity according to the Jain concept of reality.
