Travel Guide Jamaica Overview
From: Jamaica Adventure Guide
Jamaica’s geography is, unlike that on some of its Caribbean neighbors, diverse. While many tropical islands are flat and featureless, Jamaica is large enough to have a full menu of topographical features – mountains, waterfalls, rivers, forests, plains, caves, bays, beaches. Rivers
The island covers over 4,000 square miles. Mountains run like a backbone down the center from east to west, and along the journey they create a quiltwork of 160 rivers and cascading waterfalls. The largest river on the island is the Black River, navigable for about 25 miles. Other significant rivers include the Rio Cobre, the White River, the Rio Grande, and the Lethe. The islands of the Caribbean look like stepping stones stretching in an arc from the western end of Venezuela in South America to the peninsula of Florida in North America. The islands are actually summits of a submarine mountain range, which in prehistoric times perhaps formed one large landmass connecting Central America to Venezuela in South America. Today these islands together with the northern coast of South America bound the Caribbean Sea.
The eastern end of the arc consists of the smaller islands, which together form the Lesser Antilles. The Greater Antilles consists of four large islands of Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and Puerto Rico and form the northern part of the arc. The islands vary widely in size, Jamaica being the third largest after Cuba and Haiti. Measuring 235 km from east to west and 80 km at its widest north to south point, Jamaica has a total area of about 10,990 sq km and boasts a coastline of about 1000 km. The island is strategically situated between Florida and Panama Canal on the world's major shipping and airline routes. Almost at the center of the Caribbean Sea, Jamaica lies 150 kilometers south of Cuba and 160 kilometers west of Haiti, its two closest neighbors.

Mandeville

The largest English speaking city in the Caribbean, capital of Jamaica, housing the seat of it's government. It is blessed with the seventh largest natural harbour in the world, and offers visitors attractions ranging from beaches to mountain treks. It is the center of Jamaican culture featuring the National Dance Theater, the National Gallery, the LTM Pantomime Theatre, a convention center, and the Jamaican Philharmonic. The Bob Marley Museum features items relating to the most famous of reggae singers and is housed in his former recording studio.
Other wonderful places to visit include Devon House, Hope Gardens and Port Royal (the former pirate center of the new world). In addition to all this, the shopping centres, restaurants, theatres and other forms of nightly entertainment ensure that Kingston maintains its reputation as the Caribbean's number one hot spot.
Kingston is also the gateway to The Blue Mountains. They have long been recognized as one of the most important botanic gardens in the Caribbean, they have a park setting of spacious green lawns with stately royal palms and other trees whose spreading arms offer respite from the strong Jamaican sun. Just 13 miles (21 km) from Kingston is Spanish Town, Jamaica's first capital for over 300 years.
Is Jamaica's second city, affectionately known by its population of over 70,000 as "Mo' Bay". It vies with Ocho Rios for being the tourist capital of the island. It boasts over thirty hotels and is a main attraction being so close to the airport where most tourists arrive.
