kristen mcquillin essays weblog work whirl ... Main November 03, 2002 Culture Day
I'm not sure what people are supposed to do on Culture Day. Go to museums, maybe. We went to a seaside park, had a chilly picnic lunch and wandered around the embankment enjoying the breeze and the sunset. After dark, we abandoned our plan to ride the ferris wheel (an hour is entirely too long to wait for an amusement ride) and went to the arcade instead. Tod tried his hand (but not both) at driving a city bus. He managed to pick up a few passengers before his time ran out but he wouldn't cut it as a Toei Bus driver. I tried the game, but kept crashing and driving in the wrong lane. Just like real life... I did much better when I played a "walk the dog" simulation. I walked on a treadmill and held a leash while watching the antics of a video dog. The dog loved it when I ran with him. So did the people who were watching me. I was tired by the time we got to the "pet store." So our culture day celebrated pop culture. As Tod jokes, let's get some petri dishes... Posted by kuri at November 03, 2002 11:42 PM

The Japan Culture and Language Program
Application deadline: March 25, 2003 Why come to the Japan Culture and Language Program?
INTRODUCTION
There are many programs available for learning Japanese and studying about Japanese culture, but the Japan Culture and Language Program at Keiwa College is unique. We offer more than just language study, but a well-rounded cultural experience in a part of Japan that most tourists never get to see. We hope that you will compare the JCLP to other programs of this type. We are confident that if you do, you will come to the JCLP in 2003.

The Japan Culture and Language Program at Keiwa College offers
Japanese language classes and presentations in English about Japanese life, as well as field trips with an English-speaking staff member. It is not necessary to be fluent in Japanese to get the most out of the entire program.
a location in a part of Japan away from the tourist track clean air and pleasant, safe surroundings. Of the many foreigners who come to Japan to tour or study, only a very few get the chance to experience the "back country" of Japan. Rural Niigata retains the traditional charm that has been lost in the major urban areas.
Active involvement in college campus life (clubs, sports, after-class activities, just "hanging out") at a small, friendly Japanese university (JCLP participants are not separated from Japanese students, and the program is set up to bring JCLP students into contact with Keiwa students.)

50. Japan @ Your Fingertips - Japan: Culture: Bonsai
Japan Culture Bonsai Introduction. Bonsai literally meaning tray plant - are plants that have been specially cultivated
http://www.japantips.com/culture/bonsai.asp
Japan Culture Bonsai Introduction document.write(customDateString(oneDate)) Bonsai - literally meaning "tray plant"- are plants that have been specially cultivated with their shape crafted and their size controlled. The art of bonsai growing originated in China in a more simplified form, know as pun-sai which had ties to taoism. After about a thousand years, it migrated to Japan, arriving during the Kamakura era , whereupon its association with Zen lead the art itself to be cultivated and made to grow into the art form that exists today - an art which is as much concerned with the process of creating beauty (and the contemplation required during this process) as with the final product. Bonsai are almost always placed off center in their containers. This asymmetry is vital both for the visual effect and for creating a "centerpoint" that symbolizes the confluence of heaven and earth. A triangular pattern is normally used to create visual balance. Traditionally, there are three requirements for bonsai growing - shin zen and bi which translate as "truth, goodness and beauty".

JAPAN CULTURE
