What's in a Word
In 1997-98, I wrote a monthly column for Japan Currents magazine, with a Japanese and English-speaking readership - "What's in a Word" - with some light linguistic musings on both English and Japanese topics, many of which I've posted here. They were published with Japanese translations, which I hope to have up here soon, as well: My (Japanese-related) "What's in a Word" columns in Japan Currents Sancho Wasan " by Rennyo (1415-99), hossu (head abbot) of Honganji, Kyoto] During the years I've studied Japanese, I've compiled numerous lists about segments of the language. One of my favorites is a large collection of numerical classifiers (see below), but there are also expression lists of various types, compound verbs, etc., etc., which will appear here as time goes by. Most of them include some Japanese characters, but even without a Japanese system you can read them with the

Welcome to the Classical-Japanese.net!
This website is a continually growing collection of short "lecture notes", featuring a poem or passage from Japanese or Chinese classics, presented in original script (encoded in euc-JP), and in English translation. I have reorganized this website recently, and added lots of new content. I regrouped the poems in a separate poetry section, while most of the new stuff is related to Oriental philosophy, ranging from Confucius and Lao Tse to premodern Zen masters and martial art classics.
Here is the table of content:

Jim Breen's Japanese Page Last Modified: 27 March 2003. (Details of recent updates As many readers of this page will know, I have an on-going interest in Japan, its people and language. This has led to a number of activities bringing together Japanese and my professional activities in computing and telecommunications. I have assembled this set of pages: (a) to provide information about a number of my projects in the area of Japanese computing and dictionaries, (b) to provide links to some of the resources available on the WWW on Japanese matters. These pages received a mention in an article in the Asahi Evening News, by Andrew Horvat, whose pages have a link below. William Gordon has written an extended essay on these pages and the WWWJDIC dictionary server. David Jolly mentioned WWWJDIC in an article in the International Herald Tribune backup copy Please feel free to send me email about the various Japanese projects described on this page. I will try very hard to reply quickly, but I get a lot of mail, and long letters may take a while. If you are thinking of emailing me about other things, especially to ask me questions not related to my projects, please read this page first, as it may save us both some time. If you want to link to or from this page, I have some

I wanted to create a resource which combined etymology, calligraphy, and memory aids, as there were no textbooks as comprehensive as my ambition. At that time there was a general paucity of websites where you could really learn Japanese online. About this site
This page is meant to help students of Japanese practice their writing skills. By following along with the motion of several animated GIF files, you can hone your writing skills, making your katakana, hiragana, and kanji more legible. As of now, it does not deal with transliteration, dipthongs, why the characters are organized the way they are, or any other writing conventions; it is only meant to help learn individual characters. The romanized equivalents of the sounds I've used are ones I believe to be most understandable to English speakers, because I've never felt a chill thinking about the beauty of sunrise over Mount Huzi. When I first began learning Japanese, I found that among all of the other difficulties, writing posed special challenges. Not the least of these challenges was the fact that when writing Japanese characters, you must follow a specific order and direction of the strokes in order to be understood by a native reader of Japanese. Several times when trying to communicate through writing, I was met with blank looks of incomprehension, because what to me looked like the character for "water" looked to the average Japanese person like a scribbled mess. Any book that deals with Japanese writing (two I have found immensely useful are Reading Japanese by Jorden and Chaplin, and
