It is believed to be linked to the Altaic language family (Turkish, Mongolian, ...) but shows also similarities to Austronesian languages like Polynesian. Writing
The Japanese writing system is very complicated. It consists of three different character sets: Kanji (several thousands of Chinese characters) and Hiragana and Katakana (two syllabaries of 46 characters each; together called Kana). Japanese texts can be written in two ways: In the same way as Western texts are written in, i.e. horizontally from top to bottom, or in the traditional Japanese way, vertically from right to left. Both writing styles exist side by side today. Pronunciation
Accents do exist in the Japanese language, however, to a lower extent than in the Chinese language. In addition, there are many words that are pronounced the same, but have different meanings.

http://www.geocities.com/neosol/travellog/
I have decided to try to keep a log over my activities in Japan so that my friends and family can keep track of what is going on in my life. Also it might provide an intresting introduction to Japan and its culture for people who haven't been there. I will try to update once a week and complement the text with pictures taken with my digital camera throughout my intended year-long stay in Japan. If you enjoy reading about Japan I recommend the homepages of my friends Hans , who has a diary he wrote when we studied as exchange students in Sapporo 2000, and Petri , who has a great story from one of his hitch-hike travels in Japan (in Swedish) as well as photos from travels in China, Hong Kong, Macau and Japan. See also Petri's new site Kyoto Creative Services where he has put up info and movie-clips from Kyoto. Travel Log Index ProLog

@@@@'North Kyushu Creole' A Hypothesis concerning the Multilingual @@@@Formation of Japanese John C. Maher@
INDEX These are the words The words handed down (Kojiki 712) Abstract Introduction We know from early literary records that Japan possessed fairly distinct language communities. There is, for example, a revealing phrase of Kakinomoto Hitomaro in the Man'yoshu - compiled after 759 - concerning the incomprehensible speakers in the district of Azuma: In Azuma the primitives and the birds twitter and chirp all together Similarly, in the Tale of Genji, written around 1,000 by Lady Murasaki, in the last 10 chapters ( Uji jujo ) people beyond the walls of the town of Kyoto were described as being 'wild' and 'speaking like birds'. In the Tamakazura chapters the Heroine finally manages to escape from Kyushu, a wild country across the sea. Neither did the writing system help stabilize any particular variety of Japanese even though Japanese syntax was employed in the earliest poems written in Manyogana in Kojiki (712) and Nihon Shoki (720). The reason for this is obvious. Literacy in kanbun or the imported Chinese style of writing was known by only a very small minority of the elite.

Phonetically spelled, "Romanized" Japanese words may be entered as well, regardless of spelling. Headwords that are spelled phonetically are properly accent-marked. Advanced search of idioms or examples is available. Japanese is displayed in Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji and Romaji (English transliteration of Japanese characters) with accent marks. Romaji input method (Hiragana to Romaji chart included in the manual) is available.
