New Jersey is surrounded by water except along the 50 mi (80 km) of northern border with New York state. The northern third of the state lies within the Appalachian Highland region, where ridges running northeast and southwest shelter valleys containing pleasant streams and glacial lakes. Beyond the crest of wooded slopes are long-established farms given over to dairying and field crops. The Kittatinny Mts., with the state's highest elevations (up to 1,803 ft/550 m), stretch across the northwest corner of New Jersey from the New York border to the Delaware Water Gap . In 1961 New Jersey, along with three other states and the federal government, signed the Delaware River Basin Compact , providing for the control of water resources and rights throughout the Delaware River basin.

Chowhound's Mid-Atlantic Message Board Subject: North Jersey geography of the "Joe" sandwich From: pennbrew2@aol.com (Guy) Posted: October 01, 2002 at 02:40:45 Message: This singularly delicious sandwich is found in a small region of North Jersey. Most common variant is the "Turkey Joe", although Roast Beef Joes and Ham Joes are also found.
Joes are assembled from 3 slices of real rye bread (sliced to order), a healthy dose of sliced meat, Swiss cheese, cole slaw and Russian dressing. Made properly, a good Turkey Joe is about the best sandwich you'll ever eat.
My wife is from Chatham, her favorite Joe comes from the Hickory Tree deli; I lived in Summit and prefer the Towne Deli. Can anyone in NJ confirm the geography of this sandwich? I don't think it exists as far east as Union or as far west as Morristown. When visiting the area (we live in PA now), I always return home with a cooler-full of Joes.
If you're ever driving thru this area and need a great lunch, give one a try!

My grandmother who lived in South Orange and then Verona often would have them around. You didn't mention it, but another distinguishing feature of the sandwich is that they are always cut into smaller pieces approximately 2 inch by 2 inch. Thus, they are great for parties where you can have a few different kinds for a meal.
Though I don't know the extent of the "Joe" geography, they do exist in various areas under different names. For example, here in the Philadelphia area, they generally are called "special". For example, a corned beef special is corned beef, Swiss, coleslaw and russian on rye. They're not cut the same way and they generally don't taste exactly the same, but they're similar.
