Geography Lesson Princeton men's basketball has literally gone from coast to coast. Jan. 9, 2003 When Princeton played in the Cable Car Classic between Christmas and New Year's, it marked a homecoming of sorts for the four Tigers from the state of California. That would be more than 25% of the current roster. In recent years, Princeton's roster has had a decidedly Californian flair to it. Beginning with the Class of 2000, Princeton has had 32% (six of 19) of its players who have either lettered as seniors or are still on the team come from the Golden State. That trend is set for the near future, as two of the four members of the incoming Class of 2007 are from California. Of all the trends in Princeton basketball in the last 30 years, perhaps the most interesting and least talked about is not the shot clock, the three-pointer or the up-tempoing of the offense. It's geography.

For example, The Maya of Yucatan sent salt and finely decorated cottons to Honduras and in return they received cacao beans, which were used for making a chocolate drink. The Maya from the lowlands also traded handicrafts and sea items for jade, volcanic glass, and tropical bird feathers from the highlands in Guatemala. Agriculture Maya farmers chiefly raised, corn, beans and squash. Corn was the principal food of the Maya. Women prepared it many ways including flat corn cakes, known as tortillas today. The Maya were especially influenced by cultures such as the Olmecs, Teotihuacanos, Toltecs, Mixtecs, and the Aztecs.

A bight is a general term for a bend or curve in the shoreline of an open coast. In the New York region it refers to the great expanse of shallow ocean between Long Island (to the north and east) and the New Jersey Coast (to the south and west). Because Long Island trends generally east to west in relation to mainland of New Jersey it creates a great right angle in the general geometry of the Atlantic coastline. The Hudson River's outer harbor and the Raritan Bay (shown in the image above) constitute only a fraction of the greater New York Bight region. It is bordered by New York State (N and, across the Hudson R. and New York Harbor, E), the Atlantic Ocean (E), Delaware, across Delaware Bay (S), and Pennsylvania, across the Delaware R. (W). New Jersey is surrounded by water except along the 50 mi (80 km) of northern border with New York state. The northern third of the state lies within the Appalachian Highland region, where ridges running northeast and southwest shelter valleys containing pleasant streams and glacial lakes. Beyond the crest of wooded slopes are long-established farms given over to dairying and field crops. The Kittatinny Mts., with the state's highest elevations (up to 1,803 ft/550 m), stretch across the northwest corner of New Jersey from the New York border to the Delaware Water Gap. In 1961 New Jersey, along with three other states and the Federal government, signed the Delaware River Basin Compact, providing for the control of water resources and rights throughout the Delaware River basin. Southeast of the Highlands lie the Triassic lowlands or piedmont plains, extending from the northeastern border to

    Trenton, N.J.
Revised, 2001 INTRODUCTION WHY TEACH NEW JERSEY HISTORY According to Title 18A of the New Jersey State Statutes, each school district "shall adopt a suitable two-year course of study in the history of the United States, including the history of New Jersey, to be given to each student during the last four years of high school." Furthermore, the law states that each school district "shall adopt a course of study in community civics, the geography, history and civics of New Jersey. . . to be taken by all pupils in the public elementary schools in the grade or grades in which it given . . ." (Italics added.) The Department of Education has proposed changes to the Admin-istrative Code, but not to the above statute. Former Education Commissioner Leo Klagholz stated in a memorandum to the State Board of Education, dated May 6, 1998, that the proposed new chapter to the Administrative Code will "rescind all other curriculum mandates in the code, except those required in statute." Teaching New Jersey history and geography is a major priority of the Core Curriculum Content Standards. The Social Studies Standards specifically refer to a "historical understanding" of New Jersey in the following areas:
