Newsgroup History
"History" may be the wrong title for this page, as it's difficult to call something history when the difference between history and current events is so blurry. I've been rewriting this page for 6 years to keep up with ongoing history, and I will probably have to continue doing so until the Wheel stops turning. Please help me keep it accurate and up to date by offering your suggestions. Let me know if you have a question you'd like to see me answer here or a correction of something I've gotten wrong. Last update: April 2000. Minor tweaks.
Ancient History
Most of you reading this page are familiar with the newsgroup rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan (abbreviated rasfwrj). Before July 1994, though, there was no such group. Rasfwrj sprang from rec.arts.sf.written (raswf), a newsgroup for the discussion of all written works of speculative fiction. If you only want a short explanation of what happened, it is sufficient to say that the RJ-related traffic on rasfw grew large enough that a separate group, rasfwrj, was created in July 1994. If you want a more detailed account, keep reading.
Growing Pains
There were two attempts at creating a new newsgroup in the rec hierarchy for Robert Jordan. The first happened in about October of 1993 when rec.arts.sf.written was being flooded with lots of RJ traffic due to the release of

Jordan Time and Date Jordan History Back to Top Jordan was the site of some of the earliest settlements and political entities known to historians. The Ammonites and the kingdoms of Edom, Gilead, and Moab, situated east of the Jordan River, are referred to repeatedly in the Bible. These kingdoms were successively conquered by, or made tributary to, the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Romans. Jordan was wrested from the Byzantine Empire by the Arabs between 633 and 636 and has since remained an Arab-Islamic country. During the Crusades parts of Jordan were governed by Christians. From 1517 until 1918 Jordan was ruled by the Ottomans . The Early Bronze Age (c. 3000–2100 BCE) is marked by deposits at the base of Dhiban. Although many sites have been found in the northern portion of the country, few have been excavated, and little evidence of settlement in this period is found south of Ash-Shawbak. The region's early Bronze Age culture was terminated by a nomadic invasion that destroyed the principal towns and villages, marking the end of an apparently peaceful period of development. Security was not reestablished until the Egyptians arrived after 1580 BCE. It was once believed that the area was unoccupied from 1900 to 1300 BCE, but a systematic archaeological survey has shown that the country had a settled population throughout the period. This was confirmed by the discovery of a small temple at Amman with Egyptian, Mycenaean, and Cypriot imported objects.

The History of the
Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

The Nabataeans were the first known inhabitants of the area that is now Jordan. The Romans absorbed it into their empire, as part of the province of Arabia, in AD 106. Shortly after the death of the Prophet Muhammad in AD 632, Arab armies entered the region and established the Umayyad dynasty. However, this became something of a provincial backwater after the conquest of Baghdad. During the 11th and 12th centuries, Jordan was the scene of some of the major conflicts between the Christian Crusaders and Islamic forces. Salah ad Din (known in the West as Saladin) and his successors ruled Jordan from his main seat of power in Egypt from the late 12th century until they were displaced by the Mamluks, a race of mostly Kurdish and Circassian origin. The Mamluks repelled the Mongol invasion of the 14th century but were eventually overthrown by the Ottoman Turks in 1517. Jordan was governed along with modern-day Palestine and Syria as a single administrative entity (called a vilayet). Turkish rule lasted, in an increasingly anaemic form, until the beginning of the 20th century.

At the start of the 19th century, Jordan belonged to the Ottoman Empire . For a brief time after World War I, it was part of the kingdom of Syria. Then it fell under the rule of Great Britain and became Transjordan, with Abdullah bin Al-Hussein as its emir. In 1946 the country gained its independence and became the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, with Abdullah as its first king. In 1951 Abdullah was assassinated by a Palestinian who resented him for political reasons. The assassin also fired at the king's grandson Hussein, but the bullet bounced off a medal Hussein was wearing over his heart. After Abdullah's death, Hussein's father Talal ascended the throne. He was soon declared unfit to rule because of mental incompetence, and in 1952 the 16-year-old Hussein was proclaimed king of Jordan. A respected voice for peace in the Middle East, King Hussein ruled until 1999, when he died and was succeeded by his eldest son, King Abdullah II.

long interval to present View Timeline The schism between canonical Pern and Far Jordan Weyr begins during the First Long Interval, some five hundred Turns ago. During 1008, two hundred Turns into the Interval, the people and dragonriders of Pern prepare for the coming of Thread. As the skies remain empty for that first Turn, then the second, then the one after that, initial confusion gives way to a celebratory attitude as the planet unwittingly enters the second half of the Long Interval. A food surplus and the unexpected freedom to venture out under Thread-free skies creates an attitude of optimism throughout the planet. As prosperity increases, so does the population. Bigger families became more and more common and require more land. Soon the Northern Continent begins to feel the pinch of overcrowding. After a perusal of several old maps in the Tillek records, Shipcraftmaster Begawan, on an eccentric whim, launches with the three-masted Child of Fortune to follow old sea routes to the fabled Southern Continent.

HISTORY of JORDAN
A BRIEF LOOK AT THE JORDAN'S POLITICAL HISTORY
A fter the Turkish defeat in World War I, the territory of Jordan became part of the short-lived Syrian kingdom of king Faisal I (later king of Iraq). After the French forces defeated Faisal in 1920, Transjordan was incorporated into Britain's League of Nations' mandate of Palestine. Transjordan was treated separately from Palestine, however, and its residents were assured that it would not be affected by the establishment of a Jewish homeland in the future. His majesty king Abdullah, Faisal's brother, was chosen to rule over Transjordan in 1921. He cooperated closely with the British, who helped create the Arab Legion, a small army later commanded by Sir John Glubb. In 1928 a treaty with Britain made Transjordan a constitutional monarchy. A second treaty with the British on Mar. 22, 1946, created the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. T ransjordan opposed the partition of Palestine and joined the other Arab League nations in fighting the new Israeli state in 1948. By the end of the war it occupied a section of West Bank territory designated for the Arabs in the United Nations partition plan. The country's name was changed to Jordan in 1949, and in 1950 it formally annexed the West Bank territory, including Old Jerusalem. H is majesty king Abdullah was assassinated in 1951, and a year later his son Talal stepped down in favor of Talal's son Hussein I. Hussein established greater independence from Britain, especially after 1956.

    Robert Jordan's History
The text below was not written by me and I take no credit for it. Robert Jordan, creator of The Wheel of Time believes that fantasy is an enduring form of literature because it reaches "something deep in people; their dreams." He feels that fantasy literature appeals to a desire for a simpler time of life with recognizable good and evil, and that fantasy provides a universe with rules, order and underlying framework. The author has both a degree in physics and a military background, unusual credits for a fantasy writer. A lifelong resident of Charleston, South Carolina, Jordan was born in 1948. With a brother 12 years his senior, Robert began his education at an early age, and his future interest in fantastic literature was inevitable. "When my parents couldn't get a baby-sitter, they'd get my brother," he recalls. "He would read to me, not kids' books, but things he was interested in, like Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and Mark Twain, so I was exposed to a lot of great fiction. Jordan served two tours of duty in Vietnam (from 1968-70), earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze star. The Vietnamese twice awarded him with their Cross of Gallantry. After Vietnam, he entered the Citadel, the military college of South Carolina, where he received a degree in physics. In retrospect, Robert Jordan feels that physics is not such an unusual background for a fantasy writer. "You can't study quantum mechanics without a feel for fantasy," he recently reflected, "Schrodinger's Cat alone will kill any logical person dead." After attaining his degree, he was employed by the Navy as a nuclear engineer. He was hospitalized for an injury which gave him a great deal of time to catch up on his reading. Jordan quickly ran out of satisfactory material, and in exasperation, thought he could probably write as well as the authors he had been reading. The Wheel of Time is the happy result.

Like neighbouring Palestine, Transjordania came under a League of Nations mandate under which the British maintained control. The mandate ceased in 1946, at which point Transjordania attained full independence under the present constitution.
