High Anxiety

Americans made a panic-fueled run on duct tape and plastic sheeting in the wake of government terrorism warnings. Sure, the media were merely the messengers, but many news organizations could have reported this story with more context and less hype.
By Lori Robertson
Girding for Terror

News organizations are making contingency plans to keep operating during an attack and to protect staffers who have to cover it. In the post-September 11 world, every journalist is a potential war correspondent.
By Rachel Smolkin
Everybody Wins
Fox News Channel and CNN are often depicted as desperate rivals locked in a death match. In fact, the cable networks aren’t even playing the same game. There’s no reason they both can’t flourish. By Paul Farhi The Crowded Bus Cable TV, the Internet, a massive media presence and a front-loaded primary schedule have dramatically changed the pace and tenor of presidential campaign coverage. There’s no such thing as “off-Broadway” anymore.

Who's linking to http://www.internet-resources.com/writers?
... and an added note ...
For those who have asked and those who may, this collection of links for writers, researchers and the terminally curious is not, was never intended to be, and will never be the all-inclusive stash of every possible link fitting our slapdash criteria for what belongs here.
We select sites with some consideration and thought for usefulness, depth, interest and je ne sais quoi and we try not to offer fifty different links to "manuscript submission." Sometimes we find a really cool site on a subject we already cover and mull over which link to keep and which to set free, sometimes we keep both and add a third. We lean toward linking to cool sites maintained by people we've met in the ether, but don't use a friend's site if there's a better site elsewhere.
We don't link to just anybody and seldom link to commercial sites such as "Learn to Write in Five Days" or "We Will Publish Your Book" unless there is some no, make that a lot of free, useful content. We try to stay away from scammers and frauds; if you see links to what you think are questionable sites, drop us a line. We may or may not agree with you. Whether links are here or not is totally based on how we were feeling before our morning cup of espresso.

Course description Goals and objectives Program descriptions News Writing is the first comprehensive journalism course offered through the PBS Adult Learning Service. Through the video programs, hosted by Peter Berkow, a student workbook and an innovative textbook, students learn how to start, develop and polish hard news and feature news stories. News Writing incorporates interviews with more than 100 working journalists from Pulitzer Prize winners to reporters at small town papers. These experts provide insight and advice providing students the opportunity to learn from their experiences. The News Writing series and related materials reinforce both traditional and emerging journalism styles in broadcast and public relations writing, as well as print journalism. In addition, editorial and column writing are explored along with use of language, media ethics and media law. The video programs explore topics such as: how journalists determine what the public needs and wants to know; the development and organization of a story; differences between writing and reporting; and the difficulties in covering disasters.

Travel Writer Says It's Arduous, Rewarding Photos by Jessica Gadeken "I'm not reckless, although I do like a reasonably calibrated sense of adventure and risk," said author David Quammen, who spoke Wednesday night as the 7th annual Greg Hinderyckx Travel Writing Lecturer. Freelance travel writing is not the dream job many people think in fact, it's not really a job at all, author and science writer David Quammen said Wednesday evening at Harris Hall. So don't ask him the most common question he hears, usually with a mixture of skepticism and envy: "You get paid to do that?" "This question comes from readers, sometimes, but more often from friends, acquaintances, people you meet at airports," said Quammen, who spoke at Medill's 7th annual Greg Hinderyckx Travel Writing Lecture. "These well-meaning people have an inaccurate perception of travel writing." In addition to the fact that freelance writers have no job security, pension or other benefits associated with stable, middle-class employment, true travel writers face a demanding, tedious, lonely, sometimes dangerous task, he said.
