Selected Supreme Court Decisions The judicial branch is headed by the U.S. Supreme Court, which is the only court specifically created by the Constitution. In addition, Congress has established 13 federal courts of appeals and 95 federal district courts. The president has the authority to appoint federal judges as vacancies occur, including justices of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court meets in Washington, D.C., and the other federal courts are located in cities throughout the United States. The federal courts hear cases arising out of the Constitution, federal laws and treaties and maritime cases; cases involving foreign citizens or governments; and cases, in which the federal government is itself a party. With minor exceptions, cases come to the Supreme Court on appeal from lower courts. Most of these cases involve disputes over the interpretation and constitutionality of actions taken by the executive branch and of laws passed by Congress or the states.

The Federal Judicial Branch The position of the United States courts in the nation's system of government is not difficult to understand when that system is viewed as a whole. The government of the United States is a dual onefederal (national) and state. The federal government has three separate branches: the legislative branch (Congress), the executive branch (the President, administrative agencies, and military services), and the judicial branch (the courts). The powers of the U.S. courts are limited first to the powers granted to the federal government by the U.S. Constitution and second to judicial powers. The courts cannot exercise powers granted by the Constitution to the legislative branch or the executive branch of the federal government. The Constitution ensures the judicial branch's equality with and independence from the legislative and executive branches. Although federal judges are appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate and the funds for the operation of the courts are appropriated by Congress, the independence of the U.S. courts is provided for in three respects: o Under the Constitution, these courts can be called upon to exercise only judicial powers and to perform only judicial work.

Welcome to the Colorado State Judicial Branch The Colorado Judicial Branch joins the Legislative and Executive branches to form the government for the State of Colorado. The Judicial Branch is charged with two responsibilities: resolving disputes and supervising offenders on probation. The Branch includes the Supreme Court Court of Appeals , and district and county courts, served by 256 justices and judges in 22 judicial districts across the state (excluding 17 Denver county court judges). Municipal courts are not part of the state system. There are also seven water courts , one in each of the major river basins. For more information about us, see " About Our Courts. " The stone column, at left, is one of two that flank the Colorado Supreme Court bench in the old Supreme Court chambers at the State Capitol. The rose onyx and white marble was brought in via wagon and train from Beulah and Marble, Colo., when the State Capitol was constructed in the early 1890s.
