School construction, remodeling ongoing
By The Salina Journal
In November 1998, Salina voters approved two questions aimed at improving the Salina schools a $98.8 million bond issue for construction and remodeling, and a Ž-cent sales tax for technology improvements. The two projects are related in that much of the new technology is being added as part of the construction and renovation process; both are scheduled to be completed by December 2003. Construction
The first phase of the new construction involves renovations and additions to Coronado and Oakdale schools, building the new Cottonwood Elementary School, which replaces Whittier-Bartlett Elementary, and building the new Lakewood Middle School near Lakewood Park in northeast Salina.
  • Coronado Elementary Students and staff began classes in the new addition at Coronado after spring break in the 2000-2001 school year. Renovation of the existing Coronado building is nearly complete. The project is slated for completion for the start of the 2001-2002 school year.
  • Oakdale Elementary Masonry work is finished on the new addition and interior work is being completed for the start of the 2001-2002 school year.

STANDARDS FOR MISSOURI SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA CENTERS Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Presented to the State Board of Education
    December 1996
    INTRODUCTION
In the fall of the 1994-95 school year, the Missouri Association of School Librarians (MASL), with the support of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), conducted a two-part comprehensive survey designed primarily to develop a profile of the status of school library media centers in the state at that time. The first, a 29-item survey instrument, was sent to all school library media specialists (see Glossary ) in the state to determine the levels of services provided through the school library media centers. High service school library media centers were defined as those with scores included in the top 25% of three grade level categories: grades 6 and under, grades 7 and up, and K-12. The second questionnaire, designed to collect data relevant to resources was mailed to librarians in those "high service" media centers. Resources were categorized into collections, funding, personnel, and facilities. Returns from school library media specialists were analyzed based on the same three categories of grade levels served. The Standards for Missouri Library Media Centers (1997) replaces Media Standards for School Learning Resources Centers (1980). The revised standards are based on prevailing guidelines promoted in the literature, characteristics of educational and library media center environments prevalent in the state as reported by officials in the DESE and, to a limited extent, analysis of the data collected in the surveys.
