Program addresses teacher shortages
By Julie Rausch
Laurie Kiss became a math teacher at Wichita Southeast High School because of a WSU program that helps address teacher shortages in Kansas. It puts people who have non-education degrees into high school classrooms while they work on their teaching certificates. Fortunately an alternative teacher certification program is an option in Kansas through Wichita State University, and algebra and geometry students at Southeast have a quality teacher who values her students and loves her job. Since beginning in 1996, the ATC program has helped address teacher shortages in Kansas by getting people who have non-education degrees into high school classrooms while they work on their teaching certificates. Participants already have one or more degrees in biology, chemistry, physics, physical science, math, English, social studies, Spanish, French, art, music or physical education, but they want to teach. It allows career changers to join the two-year graduate program, taking courses in the summer and working during the school year as a provisionally certified teacher, says Bob Lane, ATC program coordinator at WSU.

Kansas City Teaching Fellows Home About KCTF Fellowship Basics FAQs ... Apply now! Fellowship Basics The mission of the KCTF is to increase the number of outstanding individuals who become public school teachers and to give them the tools to maximize their impact on student achievement. These statements are grounded in the belief that our community’s top minds will commit themselves to teaching and improving public education if they are given the opportunity and support they need. The program was created with this fundamental objective in mind. Because we seek to identify individuals who will work relentlessly to ensure that all students will meet high academic expectations, the process is selective in nature. People selected for the program will become part of a cohort of professionals who are all working toward a common group of goals. Upon acceptance into the program, Fellows attend an intensive summer institute which consists of six weeks of pre-service training. Upon completion of the summer institute, Fellows will be assigned a placement in either the Kansas City, Kansas or Kansas City, Missouri school district which consists of location, grade and subject if applicable. Fellows will begin teaching in the fall of 2003, and they will be placed with other Fellows and assigned a mentor teacher. During the next two-year period, Fellows will work toward their Master’s degree and/or certification while teaching. Upon completion of the program, Fellows will have earned their teacher certification and/or their Master’s degree, depending on the selected program of studies.

Back to Home ... Living Wednesday, Apr 09, 2003 Education Posted on Mon, Oct. 07, 2002 Teacher certification pushed National board has approved thousands of applicants, but few in Pa. or N.J. take part. By Melanie Burney Inquirer Staff Writer WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP French teacher Catherine Russo is a novelty in her Gloucester County district. She is the only Washington Township educator to achieve national board certification and one of just 46 in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, 47 teachers hold the honor. Russo, who teaches seventh and eighth graders at Chestnut Ridge Middle School, was certified in 1997 by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. "It's probably the most productive form of professional development I've ever done," said Russo, a teacher for 12 years. While national certification has been embraced by educators across the country, it has been slow to catch on in New Jersey. Nationwide, more than 16,000 teachers have received the certification. A new group will be named next month from among 20,000 candidates.
