aliera asked me to elaborate on my last response regarding language and culture (the one in which I quoted Pinker). The thread is now archived, but I did want to answer aliera's question.
Pinker's argument about language has 2 parts. In the first, he reviews the studies (mostly by Benjamin Whorf) claiming to find that language affects the way we think (rather than vice versa). He makes a (to me) very persuasive case that those claims are utterly unfounded.
The second part of the argument is that the claim is inconsistent with our current understanding of how language arises. In essence, if language is innate, if it is generated in an "organ" in the brain, then what that organ does is create symbols. Those symbols are universal; everyone has them. We think in that universal language. The particular language that we speak is merely a translation of that internal language.

Sixth century: Greco-Babylonian personal horoscopes appear in India. The source of introduction was probably Athenian or Alexandrian scholars avoiding Byzantine and Roman persecution. About 500: Atlatls, or spear-throwers, become standard military weapons in Mayan armies. The reason was that these doubled the maximum effective range of hand-thrown spears. (In 1993, the world-record javelin throw was 300 feet, while the world-record spear throw using an atlatl was almost 617 feet.) As this made killing men little different than hunting animals, it offended religious leaders. Therefore swords, clubs, and javelins continued to be the standard military weapons elsewhere in the Americas. The King of the Burgundians introduces trial by battle into Western Christianity. The idea was to invoke the judgment of God concerning hard-to-prove charges, such as those involving incest or cuckoldry. For, in King Gundobar’s words, "people might as well risk their bodies as their souls." Proxy fighters were allowed in these fights, with the proviso that after the battle the loser would have his hand chopped off and his employer would be hanged.

Actually Attaghan, you sound like a closet case suppressed homosexual to me. Afraid of your own sexuality. Also Attaghan, what wonderful scientific studies are you quoting for your "Gays and AIDS" research? quote: I think they should have the right to vote, the right to live, the rights of the constitution, and the right for them not to be subjects to violence. One of the rights of the constitution is to pursue happiness. Let's look at how you are flawed in this respect. quote: Yet, they don't have the right to have marriages (in the religous sense), In the religious sense? Attaghan, do you even have a clue where our current day religious marriage ceremonies come from? The ring you put on a woman's finger is to give honor to the God Saturn. The ring symbolizes the ring around Saturn. Now Attaghan, as I have grown weary and accustomed to, let me smash your argument by providing one of my own. Why gay men should be allowed to marry Homosexuals have all the same rights as heterosexuals. There’s nothing really bad that’s been linked to homosexuality. “Wait,” some may say, “we have proof that it is.”

THE REPORT Joseph Ng'andu
ZaMEA Chairman and PASMEC2001 Co-Organiser
August 2001
  • Introduction
  • Pre-conference Preparations Preparations for the conference were centred on the following activities:
    • As part of acknowledging the initiative an announcement of the undertaking was made by the executive committee of ZaMEA.
    • Effectively this announcement consisted of the formation of the Organising Committee for PASMEC2001 and putting out a Call for Presentations among the Music/Music Education fraternity.
    • The next step was the initiation of the mobilisation effort of resources for the organisation of the conference.
  • Conference Announcement IIn announcing the conference undertaking, ZaMEA put in place an organising committee. The committee decided on August as being the most appropriate time to hold the conference for a variety of reasons (AU meeting, national elections, the weather, etc.). The committee then sent out a call for presentations. Following are the details:
  • Organising Committee : The executive Committee of ZaMEA in effect transformed itself into the PASMEC2001 Organising Committee and re-organised itself in the following manner:
    • Two Co-organisers – Mr. Joseph Ng'andu (ZaMEA Chairman) became co-organiser for International participation in the conference, while Mr. Boscow Mubita became Co-organiser to spearhead the local participation.

If all races are equal, then there is no basis for racism and economic exploitation, just as there never was any basis for slavery and colonialism beyond greed. The correction of contemporary understanding of Black history has massive implications for people of African descent and identity, in relation to racism, human rights, dignity and self-respect, argued this editorial. http://www.pambazuka.org/newsletter.php?issuedate=2002-11-14

OPENING OF THE MEETING 2. The expert group segment of the Conference was opened by Mr Sekou Touré, Director of the UNEP Regional Office for Africa. Welcoming statements were made by a representative of the Kenya Government and by Mr Touré, on behalf of the Expanded Joint Secretariat. 3. Mr Simon Mbarire, Acting Deputy Director of the National Environment Secretariat of Kenya, welcomed the participants on behalf of the people and Government of Kenya, and on his own behalf. He thanked the Expanded Joint Secretariat for the excellent documentation for the meeting. 4. He said that the main aim of the World Summit on Sustainable Development was to take stock of and assess the progress made on the road towards sustainability since the 1992 United Nations Conference of Environment and Development, to identify the constraints encountered and the areas where further efforts were needed, together with the new challenges to be confronted in the further implementation of Agenda 21. With the documentation provided by the preparatory team, which would greatly promote and enhance the discussions, he believed that excellent final texts of the regional assessment report and the African common position could be prepared in the course of the meeting.

To Enjoy Equality in Decision-making and Power Roles
NEW YORK, 7 June (UN Headquarter) As the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly continued its general debate this afternoon, a number of speakers called on the international community to recognize the fundamental right of women to enjoy equality in decision-making and power roles. The Assembly has convened the special session "Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the Twenty-first Century” to assess and review progress made in implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action, which was adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. The Chairperson of Liberia's delegation, Jewel Howard Taylor, appealed to governments, international organizations and donor institutions to give women a real chance to make a meaningful difference. She challenged men, as the dominant policy formulators and implementers, to afford women, during this twenty-first century, the opportunities to make a positive difference. She said there were factors that continued to impinge on efforts to implement the Beijing Platform for Action, including continued civil conflict and strife around Africa, indebtedness and high repayment rates, inadequate grant/aid packages, regional and international trade barriers, and inadequate capacity- building at all levels. "It has been five years since Beijing, and we are still grappling with the concept of gender equality", she said. Governments were still giving women “token” positions in areas where their presence hardly makes a difference.

Does anyone else think that the illustrations in Magehunter are total rubbish? Why was there so much switching between illustrators in Fighting Fantasy books? Compare with Return to Firetop Mountain and Legend of Zagor and you'll see what I mean. Some 'artists' are quite obviously not up to it. I think the illustrations play an important role in FF books, and poor examples just don't inspire me I'm afraid. And on the discussion of 'morality' in FF books, the most heartless example I know of is in Citadel of Chaos, when you run those three 'children' (they're sort of children) through, who don't put up any resistance whatsoever.
