Culture training is over
So we arrived at PACTEC HQ and have completed our culture training. We've learned some of what we should do (bring a gift of an odd-number of flowers, candy, or wine when invited to someone's house for dinner), some of what not to do (drink with your left hand) and much more that we'll figure out when we get there :) Created by troy . Last modified We arrived in Southern California Sunday afternoon. We were picked up at Ontario's International Airport and dropped us at the accomidations for PACTEC trainees. Tim and I found our way to a grocery store and, after about 3 trips around the store, found what we needed to prepare dinner. Tim did a fine job of preparing Chicken and rice for dinner. In the process of making a salad, I've discovered that California lettuce is much tougher than what I'm used to, and Oklahoma tomatoes are much more flavorful. After dinner (and dishes - mom would be proud), I did some picking on the mandolin, which arrived here intact. I saw the sun set behind the San Bernidino mountains and the Redlands airport's beacon start moving (ok, yeah I like airplanes and airports :) Monday brought an overcast sky and unseasonably (so the locals tell me) cool weather. We received an overview of PACTEC and it's operations, a brief explanation of why we need to be prepared for the foreign culture, and were looking forward to some language training, but our trainer was unavailable :( We were trying to catch up on our sleep, so we had leftover salad, frozen tacos and boxes scalloped potatos. Oh, well.

Country Info Kazakhstan Introduction Kazakhstan General Data Kazakhstan Maps Kazakhstan Culture ... Kazakhstan Time and Date Kazakhstan Culture Back to Top Kazaks, probably more than any other Central Asian people, show the impact of nearly two centuries of close contact with Russians. Unlike Central Asians to the south of them, Kazaks look more to Russia than to Islamic countries for inspiration in the post-Soviet period. At the same time, Kazak scholars and other intellectuals actively work to reclaim Kazak traditions and distinctive ways of life, including the literary and spoken language of a people whose experience emphasized Russian culture, literature, language, and ways of thinking. The cultural traditions that are distinctively Kazakh in orientation are grounded in the Kazakhs’ nomadic past. The culture of Kazakhstan also reflects strong Russian and Islamic influences. Due to settlement patterns, Russian culture is predominant in the cities. A significant cultural development occurred during the Soviet period, when a government-mandated genre called socialist realism transformed art and literature into a form of Communist propaganda. Socialist realism directly contradicted Islamic tradition, which prohibits the representation of living things in art. Kazakstan has a number of modern theatres and offers Uighur, Korean, and Russian musicals, opera, ballet, and puppet performances. Cinemas and art schools, dance ensembles, and music groups are active, as are radio and television broadcasting, the last being especially important in communications with distant farms and villages. Reception from outside Kazakstan, especially from broadcasting stations in nearby Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan and by way of relays from Moscow, enables listeners and viewers to follow programs from many sources.

Introductory Note:
  • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
  • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."
