Faculty in Art Education hold their primary assignment in the College of Education, where demands on their time for monitoring student teaching is greatest. But one position is shared between that college and Art, and both art educators on the faculty have an office in the Campbell Building for meetings with students. In addition, a fully-equipped studio in Campbell has been dedicated to the use of the Art Education program.
Classes in Art Education include the study of fundamental concepts and theories in education, and exploration of art studio processes, materials, and activities for K-12 students. As preparation for K-12 art teacher certification, courses also cover the symbolic development of children, and instructional planning and methodologies. An important element of the degree program is the development of the teaching portfolio necessary for Kentucky teacher certification, but students are also guided in their preparation for the art and art education content questions of the PRAXIS national teacher examination.

This January, the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board launched its Teacher Certification Inquiry (TCI) service. This web-based system allows a user to search the certification and endorsement records of all teachers and administrators in the state. Users can search the system by the teacher's or administrator's name, the school's name, or the district's name. A query to the system will render the educators' active certificates and endorsements as well as a listing of the jobs the educator is qualified to fill by virtue of that certification. Since its creation, the site has had almost 35,000 queries.
    How the TCI is used
While not a primary reason for developing the TCI, the system can be used by the Education Professional Standards Board, parents, and other interested stakeholders in the system to ensure that teachers are being properly assigned to classes. (Assigning teachers to teach outside their field of certification is against the law in Kentucky, and proper teacher assignment is one element of the Kentucky state report card.) Each year the Professional Standards Board conducts an audit of districts to ensure correct assignment, a process that is considerably streamlined through the use of this database. If a parent suspects that a teacher is teaching out-of-field, he or she can look up the teacher's certification and endorsement standing via the website. If a suspected discrepancy is not resolved through the query, then an anonymous tip can be submitted to the Professional Standards Board. The Standards Board then investigates to ensure compliance to state law.

This legislation was the beginning of major teacher certification reform, and was further strengthened with the passage of the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) in 1990. As a result, the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB), was established as the state's governing body for teacher certification. KTIP is designed to help beginning teachers (interns) experience a successful first year in the classroom. KTIP provides each teacher with the assistance of a three-member committee trained in the supervision and assessment of beginning teachers. By observing and mentoring the intern, the KTIP committee supports effective teaching practice and guides the intern's professional growth. KTIP training prepares participants to serve on teacher intern committees. All principals, teachers, instructional supervisors, teacher educators and University faculty who plan to serve on KTIP committees must complete a homework assignment and a one-day training session prior to committee assignment.
