Kenya's Culture
Kenya's culture is both multifarious and fragmented. Nowhere else in Africa is there such a large number of ancient cultures, all alive and well in no hurry to change. Kenya is bestowed with well over 40 different ethnic groups with different languages and dialects, customs, beliefs and lifestyles. Unique of all tribes is the Elmolo, Kenya's smallest group which is a surviving tribe just emerging from the stone age standard of living usually described as the race that has stood the test of time. The well known Maasai too, famous for their worriorship, have a strong practical lifestyle which is basically seen to represent Kenya's traditions by foreigners. The Maasai land incorporates many of the National Parks like Amboseli, Mara, Tsavo and Nairobi National Park is now involved in the wildlife conservation projects to encourage eco-tourism. This enables the Maasai tribe to make a living from conservation and is an important factor in the preservation of wildlife habitats outside the Parks. Visitors can experience a unique holiday leaving about their culture, worldlife and ecosystem of this fascinating tribal people.

Country Info Kenya Introduction Kenya General Data Kenya Maps Kenya Culture ... Kenya Time and Date Kenya Culture Back to Top Kenya’s ethnic diversity has produced a variety and richness of cultural forms that reflect African, Asian, and European influences. Visual arts are not highly important in contemporary Kenya, although varieties of wood and clay sculpture are produced for the tourist trade. Kenya, a country of diverse and rich cultural traditions, seeks to cultivate and develop those traditions to ensure that its valuable cultural assets are not irretrievably lost and that social cohesion is not undermined in the process of change to newer ways. A National Archive Service has been established, and it is saving an increasing number of documents. A national library service board has also been established to equip, maintain, and develop libraries in Kenya, including a branch library service. Kenya's national museum contains collections of wildlife, archaeological remains, and objects of material culture. The Kenya National Theatre is incorporated in the Kenya Cultural Centre. The National Theatre School was founded in 1968 to provide professional training in theatrical techniques, which include the writing of plays by Kenyan authors and the performance of traditional music and dance. Music and dance play an integral role in social and religious life. Rhythm, all-important, is largely provided by the drum, supplemented by wind and stringed instruments. Swahili literature, both oral and written, is traditional in form and content. Contemporary novelists, including Ngugi wa Thiong'o and Mugo Gatheru, deal with the social frictions between traditional and modern society. Visual arts are largely confined to the mass production of wood sculpture for the tourist trade. Elimo Njau and Ronal Rankin are popular Kenyan painters.

T he Swahili are urbanised African muslims, who have integrated many Asian cultural and architectural features into their own traditions. Written records of the trade links between Africa and Asia date back to the 1st century AD. But the trade reached its peak in the 15th century, referred to as the "golden age" of Swahili civilisation. Mogadishu, Pate, Lamu, Mombasa and Zanzibar are thriving towns still today. Indian, Arabic and African building traditions blend together to form a unique and cosmopolitan architectural heritage.

36. CULTURE
kenya recognizes the value of preserving the positive aspects of her cultureto forge national unity, a prerequisite for development and prosperity.
http://missions.itu.int/~kenya/culture.htm
CULTURE Kenya, like many other countries, is deeply involved in reactivating and developing her culture following the suppression and degradation experienced during the colonial era. Various Kenyan communities have a rich cultural heritage which aims at trying to harness into national heritage. This has been possible through provincial cultural festivals where each province displays the way of life of each of the different members of society. The Government has been involved in the collection of many types of cultural items with the aim of studying their relevance to society. Kenya recognizes the value of preserving the positive aspects of her culture to forge national unity, a prerequisite for development and prosperity. The identification, retrieval and preservation of traditional items is therefore aimed at encouraging understanding and harmony among the various Kenyan ethnic groups. The most common cultural activities in every ethnic group in Kenya are music and drama. There are hundreds of music and dance troupes all over the country. Most groups emerge with the continued promotion of cultural awareness. Some of the most famous dance and drama groups are Sengenya and Mabumbumbu from the Coast Province, Sukuti from Western Kenya. Acrobatic dances are also frequently performed in hotels to introduce visitors to our country's cultural heritage. Traditional games and sports include wrestling, tug-of-war, running, hunting with bows and arrows and the popular stone and pebble game known as "Boa" or "Ajua" played be children and adults.
