But Douglas Wakiihuri is much more than a sportsman. He is, also, a musician. He now has a new CD and a single to his credit. Just like his gold medal in 1987 was a first for Kenya in international marathon, so too is his cross-over from sport to music. Both earn him a place among the country's sport-cum-music icons. After the marathon win, Wakiihuri went on to clinch a silver at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, a gold medal in the 1990 Commonwealth Games and innumerable victories in major marathons around the world.

culture history lake nakuru ... tsavo Travel to Kenya with Albatros Travel There are more than 70 tribal groups among the Africans in Kenya. Distinctions between many of them are blurred - western cultural values are becoming more ingrained and traditional values are disintegrating. Yet, even though the average African may have outwardly drifted away from tribal traditions, tribe is still the most important part of a person's identity. English and Swahili are the languages taught throughout the country, but there are many other tribal languages. These include Kikuyu, Luhia, Luo and Kikamba as well as a plethora of minor tribal tongues. It's extremely useful for the traveller to have a working knowledge of Swahili, especially outside the urban areas and in remote parts of the country. Another language you'll come across is Sheng, spoken almost exclusively by the younger members of society. A fairly recent development, Sheng is a mixture of Swahili and English along with a fair sprinkling of other languages. Most Kenyans outside the coastal and eastern provinces are Christians of one sort or another, while most of those on the coast and in the eastern part of the country are Muslim. Muslims make up some 30% of the population. In the more remote tribal areas you'll find a mixture of Muslims, Christians and those who follow their ancestral tribal beliefs.

quotes about culture and customs key testimonies featuring culture and customs Concern with the circumcision ritual, and its wider meaning, is a major theme of the testimonies, and attitudes towards it vary. Many Sabaot see it as central to their culture and defend it fiercely against opposition from the Church, health organisations and some individuals in the community. Indeed, the Bukusu, and the Teso who emigrated to Mount Elgon, say that they now practice male circumcision due to Sabaot influence. Several narrators, however, say they have not circumcised their children because its importance has declined. And attitudes to female circumcision - the practice that has been subject to most external opposition - are particularly ambiguous, with several women speaking out against it. The most widespread argument for circumcision is that it is a necessary ritual for transition into adulthood, through which young people learn of their forthcoming roles and responsibilities. Only a few give other explanations, ranging from the belief "that if one wasn't circumcised, he or she will not bear children", to circumcision among women being necessary as a means of "eradicating [female desire and therefore] prostitution"

For visitors, this striking cultural mix is one of the pleasures of visiting the country. For Kenyans, it has, in the past, presented some problems as various groups vied for power and territory. Culture There are more than 70 tribal groups among the Africans in Kenya. After a two month hiatus the Geek Volunteer Overseas series returns with this fourth part. Since college closed for the Christmas holidays, my social life in Tala has improved with strengthened friendships with locals. The elections held in late December and the reverberations (still being felt as I write) left in its wake have made this a new Kenya - one that is different from the one I landed in four months ago. After college ended in early November and the students had left for their homes life in the compound of Holy Rosary College became quieter. I continued my lectures on using and administering Linux machines to my colleagues for a couple of weeks. After these sessions ended, my colleagues started drifting away to spend the holidays with their families back home. I settled into a routine of not waking up to a screeching alarm clock at 6:00 a.m. and listening to "world news every hour on the hour" on the BBC World Service.

Possible Alternatives for Kenya: The scenario is this: I've been given 1 million dollars to slow the population growth in Kenya. This projust is for AP Human Geography, and I kind of went a bit overboard with it. My question for y'all is: Do i make sense? GOVERNMENTAL PROGRAMS TO SLOW THE POPULATION GROWTH IN KENYA At a growth rate of 3.7%, the general population will double every 19 years. Kenya's workforce, at a 50% unemployment rate, will suffer pay cuts of approximately one half of their current income should a lack of industry continue in the area. This problem is similar to one faced in Europe during the beginning of the Industrial Revolution; a large workforce and less employment opportunities. One million dollars have been delegated to remedy the issues at hand. The problem is difficult to solve, yet several solutions come to mind, all stemming from the introduction of one program. PROGRAM NUMBER 1: INDUSTRIAL GROWTH Kenya's primary imports include machinery and transportation equipment, petroleum products, motor vehicles, iron and steel, resins and plastics. Were some of these products to be produced in Kenya, rather than imported, the GDP would rise. In fact, as industrialization occurs, the prices of local goods rise at a steady rate with salaries. Therefore, the cost of living rises, as does the standard of living. Looking at a list of Kenya's exports, marijuana can be found, hidden at the bottom of the page. Cannabis (Hemp that is) serves as an excellent alternative to petroleum products in a variety of materials, including plastic and gasoline substitutes. The creation of hemp factories would manifest a need for a labor force, thus cutting the unemployment rate down to between one and five percent (idealized world of course).

Hardback In stock Once the major success story of a troubled continent, by the early 1990s Kenya came to be regarded as its fallen star. This book challenges such images of reversal and the analytical polarities which sustain them. Based on several years of research in Kenya, the analysis ranges from telescopic to microscopic fields of vision - from national political culture, oratory, and the staging of politics, to everyday struggles for livelihood among people in one rural locale during the past century. This sliding scale of analysis allows the author to experiment theoretically with a number of themes informed by contemporary analytical tensions among post-modernist ‘chaos’, historical contingency, and structural regularities. The result is a study which combines many disciplines and perspectives to give a rich and varied picture of the culture of politics in twentieth-century Kenya.

T he Swahili are urbanised African muslims, who have integrated many Asian cultural and architectural features into their own traditions. Written records of the trade links between Africa and Asia date back to the 1st century AD. But the trade reached its peak in the 15th century, referred to as the "golden age" of Swahili civilisation. Mogadishu, Pate, Lamu, Mombasa and Zanzibar are thriving towns still today. Indian, Arabic and African building traditions blend together to form a unique and cosmopolitan architectural heritage.
