Capsule History
* Kenya was first populated by a number of small dispersed tribal groups, the main groups were the Kikuyu, Kamba, Luo and Masai. These tribes shared the same area of land although they all had different origins.
* It wasn't until the 19th century that outsiders entered the interior of the country and as a result Kenya escaped the worst of the Arab slavers who concentrated more further to the south.
* The coast however helped to form an important part of a chain of Omani Arab trading posts. These strings of trading posts dealt mainly in ivory and slaves and were under the control of the Sultan of Zanzibar.
* The overshadowing of the Sultan's powers started in the late 19th century when both British and German personnel obtained trading concessions along the coast.
* Britain was allotted what is now Uganda and Kenya; Germany was allotted what is now mainland Tanzania.
* In 1893 Uganda became a British protectorate closely followed by Kenya - 1895. The British were just interested in controlling the rich resources of Uganda and to facilitate this they built a railway between Mombasa and Kampala using labourers from India, many of whom remained and have become todays merchant class.
* At the turn of the century British attention was drawn away from Uganda and settled upon Kenya. White farmers went in and set up plantations producing export crops. During this process many Africans lost their land; they were then forced onto inferior land or onto the labour market as a result of hut taxes imposed by the colonial administration.

Early History to Independence
During the 1950s and 60s, the anthropologist L. S. B. Leakey discovered in N Tanzania the remains of hominids who lived c.2 million years ago. These persons, perhaps the earliest humans on earth, most likely also inhabited S Kenya. In the Kenya highlands, the existence of farming and domestic herds can be dated to c.1000 B.C. Trade between the Kenya coast and Arabia was brisk by A.D. 100. Arabs settled on the coast during medieval times, and they soon established several autonomous city-states (including Mombasa, Malindi, and Pate). Farmers and herders traveled S from Ethiopia and settled in Kenya in c.2000 B.C.

History
The first of many genuinely human footprints to be stamped on Kenyan soil were left way back in 2000 BC by nomadic Cushitic tribes from Ethiopia. A second group followed around 1000 BC and occupied much of central Kenya. The rest of the ancestors of the country's medley of tribes arrived from all over the continent between 500 BC and AD 500. The Bantu-speaking people (such as the Gusii, Kikuyu, Akamba and Meru) arrived from West Africa while the Nilotic speakers (Maasai, Luo, Samburu and Turkana) came from the Nile Valley in southern Sudan. As tribes migrated throughout the interior, Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula and Shirazis from Persia (now Iran) settled along the East African coast from the 8th century AD onwards. Drawn by the whiff of spices and money, the Portuguese started sniffing around in the 15th century. After venturing further and further down the western coast of Africa, Vasco da Gama finally rounded the Cape of Good Hope and headed up the continent's eastern coast in 1498. Seven years later, the Portuguese onslaught on the region began. By the 16th century, most of the indigenous Swahili trading towns, including Mombasa, had been either sacked or occupied by the Portuguese - marking the end of the Arab monopoly of the Indian Ocean trade. The Portuguese settled in for a long period of harsh colonial rule, playing one sultan off against another. But their grip on the coast was always tenuous because their outposts had to be supplied from Goa in India. Control of the coast was won back by the Arabs in 1720.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... KENYA The Portuguese came early to Kenya (1498) and dominated the area until the sultans of Oman took control in 1729. Eventually, the British established a protectorate over the region, first at the coast in 1890 and later throughout the interior (1895). By 1920, Kenya held the status of colony, and was inhabited by a large and prosperous British community. Though the Italians briefly took control of northern Kenya during World War II (they came from Italian Ethiopia) Britain quickly regained control and even permitted some limited participation in local government to the native Africans in Kenya. In the 1950s, the violent Mau Mau rebellion emerged to fight against British colonial rule. In 1963, independence was achieved and Kenya joined the British commonwealth shortly thereafter. Jomo Kenyatta became Kenya's first president, and served until his death in 1978 when he was succeeded by Daniel arap Moi. Though Moi's government has been accused of human rights abuses, he has been reelected five times since then. Though Kenya was, for a long time, viewed as an African success story, the last decade has brought with it difficult economic and political challenges, along with violence and corruption. The presence of refugees from Somalia, Sudan, and Ethiopia has also placed a heavy burden on the government.

H ISTORY Free Speech, including expression of dissent, is permitted to a remarkable degree in comparison with most other countries in Africa. But even so, the liberalism is elastic only to certain point which is a fairly tight rein by western standards. Political advancement is still progressing as Kenya held their first multi-party elections in 1993. There have been two presidents since 1964. The first, Jomo Kenyatta, will probably be rated by history as among the most outstanding politicians of the 20th Century. Tough and shrewd, he remained in office until he died, having led Kenya along the road to a liberal capitalist system. This has not been drastically changed by his successor, the present incumbent, Daniel T. Arap Moi. Kenya stays fundamentally stable, a contrast to so many African countries which are on the point of collapse. Kenya's most intractable problem is an exceptionally high 4 percent population increase, and the escalating hunger that goes with it. These trends will inevitably become a source of increasing social and political tension, especially as the International Monetary Fund has tied low population growth to international aid. This pressure has created an opportunity for organizations such as Planned Parenthood to gain a foothold in the educational system and promote population control options such as abortion. With an absence of a rigid ideology, and a constant need for international aid, the country will continue its flexibility to address such issues, even to the extent of adopting policies which are not advantageous to the Christian community.

East Africa represents the archetypal safari to most. Tanzania and Kenya are definitely Africa's most popular wildlife destinations and you'll find a host of inexpensive to cheap "safari packages" and "safari-beach combinations". (Unfortunately we don't try to compete in this market.) We operate with a specific selection of camps and guides in both Tanzania and Kenya - our focus is predominantly on small group and privately guided trips particularly in the Serengeti, Selous and Ruaha... The trick to a planning a successful safari in the region invariably comes down to guiding standards and achieving a balance between affordability and "crowd avoidance"... Take a look at our safaris and tours in Tanzania and Kenya for the upcoming season....or see if any discounted safaris and lastminute specials are available....

Nairobi Nairobi Hospital has for years been associated with the rich, affluent and powerful. In its 49 years of existence, the hospital has saved many lives, from the most humble to the socially powerful. The hospital has served as a life saving haven as well as a route to the world yonder. It has catered for many a mighty personality. In 1976 the Government requested Nairobi Hospital to prepare an emergency wing to stand-by in case the then ailing President, Jomo Kenyatta was taken ill. Kenyatta was to die two years later in Mombasa without being admitted in the wing prepared for him. However, the hospital's great history got a scare in 1980 when it was quarantined following an outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus otherwise known as the "Green Monkey Disease."

Kenya history and time line
In 1500, the Portuguese colonized Kenya, but by the 17th century Oman and the other Arab nations ousted this colonial power and took control. The Arabs had control of Kenya until 1885, when British signed an agreement with Oman releasing the east African colony into England's colonial commonwealth. Kenya finally gained complete independence in 1963. Kenya's population consists mostly of black Africans, with bodyOffer(22245) Arabs, Europeans and Asians holding the minorities. The black Africans are divided into 40 ethnic groups. These groups belong to four linguistic families - Bantu, Nilo-hamitic, Nilotic, and Hamitic. The four largest ethnic groups inn these families are: Bantu-speaking(Kikuyu), Bantu(Luhya), Bantu(Kamba), and Nilotic(Luo). Kenya is divided into seven administrative provinces: Coastal, Eastern, Central, Rift Valley, Nyanza, Northeastern, and Western. There is some controversy over whether Kenya’s capitol, Niarobi, should be included in that count, or as a separate province. In the 1960s and 1970s, much of Kenya's lifestyle was based on agriculture, but in about the last ten years or so Kenya has become more industrialized. And, as it continues to expand, it begins, slowly, to leave the urban centers such as Niarobi and Mombasa. However, unlike some south African countries, cars are not a luxury item for only the rich political leaders. Even in rural areas, many Kenyans own cars. In the suburbs, and in the cities themselves, everyday traffic much resembles New York City.

The first written record of the Club that I can trace are notes of an informal meeting held on Wednesday 11th November, 1987 between Joe Harrison, Peter Tilbury, Sally Harrison and Anne Tilbury. From the content of the notes this was obviously not the 1st meeting , but at this meeting , a bank account was to be opened. Our logo had been designed as the printing of Application Forms and Membership Cards were being organized. The date of the inaugural meeting was set for mid January, 1988. The club had at this time applied for Registration with both the AA and the Registrar of Societies. The Constitution at this point had already been written and was being printed. The 1st official meeting of the Club took place in the Tinga Tinga Room in the Norfolk Hotel at 8.00 p.m. on the 14th January, 1988. 33 People had become members by then. 22 were present at the meeting and 10 non-members attended. At this meeting the constitution was approved, a committee was elected and future meetings were organized. Mr. Joe Harrison was elected 1st Chairman but unfortunately he left for England in August. Peter Tilbury took over. The Club’s 1st Outing was in March, 1988 to the Turaco Club for a B.B.Q. lunch. A fantastic turn out was noted. By April, the Club Membership had grown to 69 and in May, the Venue for Socials had been changed to the Jacaranda Hotel. During the 1st year the Club organized monthly meetings plus outings much as we do today. The 1st Club Annual Run was held in October, 1988 to Naivasha with 42 entrants starting from various towns in Kenya. By December of this 1st year membership reached 101. The 1st AGM was held on February, 9th, 1989 at the Jacaranda and 27 members were present.

http://www.world-odyssey.com/kenya/kenya-history.htm
Essential Info Highlights Itineraries History Kenya - A Brief History For hundreds of years Kenya's coastal regions have been staging posts for different peoples and cultures, especially the Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula who came to trade and ultimately settle. The Arab grip on the economy was temporarily lost to the Portuguese who fought the Arabs in a series of naval bombardments and street battles between the 15th to 17th Centuries. However, with the Portuguese colonies stretching as far India, maintaining a forceful presence was a constant struggle and the Arabs wrestled back control of this coastal area. The Sultans of Oman then enjoyed a period of stability and economic expansion until the European colonialists, namely Britain and Germany, started to take an interest in the area. The Omani Sultan moved his power base to Zanzibar in 1832 and the British had made the coastal region a Protectorate by the end of the 19th Century. Meanwhile a number of European explorers arrived to explore the interior which became famous for its proud and fierce warrior tribes, in particular the Masai. After the construction of the famous 'Lunatic Express' railway from Mombasa to Lake Victoria the British based their colonial headquarters in Nairobi and so began the white settlement of the rich, fertile highlands.
