What Should Be Learned in Kindergarten? Most American children attend kindergarten, and many participate in all-day kindergarten programs. While recent reform efforts have focused on extending the kindergarten day, research suggests that how kindergartners spend their time may be more critical than the amount of time children spend in class. In other words, longer kindergarten days in unsuitable activities yield no educational advantages over the traditional half-day kindergarten program. What Are Appropriate Teaching and Curriculum Approaches for Kindergartners? Early childhood and kindergarten specialists have long emphasized the central role of play in young children's learning. In the course of day-to-day experience with young children, it is easy for teachers to see that spontaneous play is a natural way of learning; observations of children's play reveal that play provides a wide range and real depth of learning in all domains of development: physical, emotional, social, and intellectual. The Kindergarten Curriculum The developmental characteristics of children of kindergarten age call for a curriculum that involves a variety and balance of activities that can be provided in the context of project work (Katz and Chard, 1989). For example, kindergarten children can undertake projects in which they investigate a real event or object. In the course of such projects, the children will strengthen emerging literacy and numeracy skills and their speaking and listening skills and acquire new words as they share their findings with others.

Our district processwriting program begins in kindergarten. social studies activitiesare integrated throughout the curriculum, themes derived from holidays
http://www.chatham-nj.org/coin/sbs/grk.htm
Our kindergarten program is designed to foster the habit of success in a socially interactive, supportive learning environment. Kindergarten age children learn best through active participation and first-hand multi-sensory experiences. The kindergarten school year is also a time for social development, learning to function as part of a group within the school setting. Achieving an appropriate level of independence, in the areas of both schoolwork and personal management, is another primary goal of our year together in kindergarten. Subject areas of focus include the following: Language Arts Language arts instruction addresses a wide variety of auditory, visual, oral and written communication skills. Activities are designed to develop phonemic awareness, alphabet recognition and letter/sound association. In addition to phonic skills, high frequency sight words are introduced. The students are exposed to a great deal of literature, as well as learning in a print-rich environment. Big Books, children’s literature and multi-copy series are utilized for read-alouds, as well as shared and independent reading. Our district process-writing program begins in kindergarten. Writing Workshop is an all-year weekly activity that is picked up and continued as an integral part of the first grade language arts program. D’Nealian letter formation instruction is introduced, bridging into first grade. Mathematics Hands-on experiences with math manipulatives provide a solid concrete foundation for learning mathematical concepts that will become more abstract as children advance through grade levels. Through concrete experiences, students will explore numerals and numbers in common mathematical relationships.

http://www.weekdayschool.org/kindergarten.html
This overview gives highlights of our kindergarten program at The Weekday School. We're enthusiastic about providing a quality, individualized, developmentally appropriate education for five and six year-olds. For more detailed information visit our classrooms, look at the materials we use and talk to the teachers about one of our favorite topics - Kindergarten! Philosophy
We strive for our kindergarten environment to be a place where children feel valued, respected and safe - safe to share thoughts and ideas, to explore, create and take risks. Each kindergartner comes to us with a unique personality, learning style and special gifts to contribute to the class. The role of the teacher is to find the ways for each child to be successful, to be challenged but not overwhelmed, and to grow socially, emotionally and intellectually. Our goal is that each child develops a comfortable sense of belonging, feeling a confidence that he or she is an important, contributing member of the group. When our kindergartners "graduate" we hope they go with a sense that learning is fun, that learning is important and that school is a good place to be. Center Time
Center time occupies a large portion of our school day. During this time the children have the opportunity to work and play independently, with small groups of other children and individually and collectively with the teacher. The teacher plans and implements meaningful activities and materials of varying levels of difficulty in the centers which provide each child with appropriate, "hands-on" learning choices. Every day during center time, the teacher works with individuals and small groups of children at the "Teacher Table" on a specific language or math skill. Our "core" centers are Computer, Art, Books, Listening, Writing, Blocks, Math, Science, Manipulatives, and Table Games. Other special centers are added during the year to provide opportunities for dramatic play, holiday themes, woodworking and sand and water play.
