EXPECTATIONS OF THREE-YEAR OLDS
Three is an age of smoothness and increased self control and integration. There is an awareness of what people like and do not like. The typical three-year old wants to please and is highly susceptible to praise.
Motor behavior is now sure. They enjoy gross motor activities with large objects. Block play usually includes much carrying and lifting, which is as important as the finished product they are building.
Fine motor development has progressed to enable this age child to pick up small objects more easily. In writing with a crayon, the adult grasp is simulated. Movements are still awkward. Sometimes they will pick up the crayon with the nondominant hand and then transfer it to the dominant hand.
Play now goes on with other children. Whereas at two they were involved in parallel play, they now begin to play cooperatively. Play is often structured by the children's imagination.
Language has expanded and the three-year old now has the ability to have fun with language. They like to make up new words and enjoy silly rhyming. They like guessing games. The concept of space and the understanding of place words have developed so that the three-year old can respond to directions which include prepositions, such as "put the ball under the table."
Three-year olds can be induced to respond by using words such as: help, needs, guess what and how about. They like the idea of a surprise and a secret. Compliance is more assured by giving the three-year old a feeling that they have a choice.

TEACHER TIPS
This page is full of teacher tips, gathered from everywhere I could possibly find; from magazines to fellow teachers. Here you will find a little bit of everything; tips for the classroom, quick activities to fill time and ideas for all subject areas. Take what you want and enjoy!
    Look for tips!
  • Use shoe boxes stored along a bench to store student's papers. Velcro a laminated name tag on each box for each child. Here they can store all of their possessions. They can also take their name off to use to practice writing their names!

  • Student Assistance: When you need a new bulletin board put up, some playground equipment put together, or a new shelving unit built, check with your local high school. Shop teachers are often looking for class projects that are a little more meaningful than making another birdhouse or whatnot shelf. Just ask!
  • Birthday Box: Create a reusable, decorated birthday box for children's birthdays. Inside place several treats, such as candy, pencils, stickers, and a birthday sticker. Leave the box on the child's desk so he will be surprised on the morning. Celebrate summer birthdays during the last month of school.
  • Missed-Work Folders: Make missed-work folders for absent students. Staple a file folder into a pocket and add a laminated message "Do the work you missed and return it and this folder to the teacher." When a student is absent, have a buddy tuck class work into the folder for the sick child. The student's work is kept up-to-date without the teacher doing it all.

    Undergraduate Program
    Program Overview
Following national mathematics standards, teacher candidates learn about developmentally appropriate algebra activities.
The Early Childhood program consists of 41 credits. The work may be started in the sophomore year and taken in blocks of 8-10 credits per semester. The program is individualized, and students progress at their own rate and according to their unique needs. During each of the first three semesters, students participate in a different, semester-long field placement that is linked with a three credit study group, in which theory is studied along with the Early Childhood classroom experiences. Students spend three hours on two mornings a week in the field for a minimum of 72 hours over the course of each semester. Each field experience is supervised and every attempt is made to provide students with culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse field experiences, with most students having at least one urban experience. Other courses focus on literacy and curriculum.

    School Day Highlights
B.F. Day has a long and proud history of educating children in Seattle. We are the oldest, continually operating school in the city. Our building is a designated historic landmark having undergone state-of-the-art renovation in 1991. B.F. Day has an outstanding record of parent and community participation in school governance and support. Our school was one of the first Seattle elementary schools to institute a Site Council with staff, parent and community participation. We have an active Parent Teacher Student Association ( PTSA ), which supports the many special programs offered to our students. A Parent Volunteer Coordinator helps place parent and community volunteers in classrooms, the library and tutoring programs. In 1996, B.F. Day instituted a Parent/Teacher/Student contract signed by all teachers and families attending the school. Parents make a commitment to volunteer a minimum of 15 hours per family to support the school. Eighty percent of all B.F. Day families currently fulfill this commitment. B.F. Day has a long-term relationship with the Fremont Arts Council, which provides volunteer involvement for school art, projects. The Fremont Chamber of Commerce partners with the school for annual fundraising activities. Our new neighbor, Adobe Corporation, provides technology and resources to the school.
