For one, they can rotate their arms inward and get up into a semierect position for moving quickly, and for another, they will hunt *cooperatively*. Not wolf or lion style, naturally, but several will get together to go after a sheep, apparently. I'll try to ask for the ref. If these guys have the brainpower to do it, there seems no reason that a few Allosaurus couldn't have gotten together to take down a sauropod, or a few dromaeosaurs to go after... well, anything they wanted to. On this site you will find almost 100 links to zoos, articles, images, stuffed animals and everything else related to the Komodo dragon. What is the Komodo? Growing up to ten feet long, it is the largest lizard in the world. Discovered by science at the start of the 20th century, some 6,000 Komodos are restricted to a few small islands in Indonesia. On these islands, they rule supreme. Then can run as fast as a dog for short stretches and prey they merely injure are brought down shortly by the deadly bacteria in their mouths. They spend their days sunning and their nights in shallow burrows. Categories: The categories overlap quite a bit. Rather than repeating entries I have generally put them in the category that fits them best. This is often a judgement call. Below lies a serene tropical beach and above a cloud forest. Around you are hills covered with savanna. In the ravines between the hills are monsoon forests. An amazing range of environments, you think to yourself, for an island only twenty miles long and ten miles wide. Suddenly from the thick grass nearby a buck bolts and runs across your path. You are startled, but soon recover. After all, it is only a deer, and in a few seconds your heart rate drops back to normal. Still, something is not right. You have the feeling you are being watched. A feeling of dread. The hairs on the back of your neck suddenly stand on end. But you don't see anything. Then you notice a smell. Unpleasant. Very unpleasant. You hear a sound in the nearby grass. You turn to look, and then it happens. The grass flies apart and something comes at you. Reptilian with cold, dead eyes. It's big. Very big. Twice your size from its ugly head to its massive tail and more than your weight. The creature's jaws open to display a set of inch-long serrated teeth dripping with deadly, infectious saliva. KOMODO DRAGON Varanus Komodoensis These little beauties (if you like that sort of thing) are another animal indigenous to Indonesia and can be found on the islands of of Komodo, Rinca, Padar, the western end of Flores, Gili, Mota and Owadi Sami often inhabiting hot arid grasslands or tropical forests at lower elevations. Remaining numbers are estimated between 3000 - 5000. Komodo Facts CHARACTERISTICS: Komodos are the world's largest lizard and, although normally sandy brown with dark spots, exhibit a wide variety of colour schemes which change with age and provide ideal camouflage. Komodos maintain a near constantly high body temperature by seeking out warm areas in the morning, cool areas during the day and often burrow during the night. They are quick and agile, have good eyesight, climb trees using their sharp claws and are good swimmers, swimming long distances when forced by the destruction of their natural habitat.

F A Q Diet The Myth D i e t What do Komodo dragons eat? Meat, meat and more meat. Komodo dragons are strictly carnivorous. Adults eat more Sunda deer (Cervus timorensis, also known as Rusa deer) than anything else. They also eat wild boar, water buffalo, rats and many other animals...including young Komodos. Much of what Komodos eat is carrion (already dead meat.) Okay, what do young dragons eat, and how do they avoid being eaten? When they hatch out of their eggs, baby dragons are typically 12 to 15 inches long, and weigh less than 4 ounces (1/4 pound). For the first few years of their lives they spend much of their time up in the trees, to avoid being eaten by adult Komodos. During this time they mostly eat insects (especially grasshoppers and beetles) and smaller reptiles (especially geckos). At about 4 years old and 4 feet long, a young Komodo is large enough to (usually) escape its predatory elders, and has become too large to be safely supported by the smallish trees in the monsoon forest. Description: The Komodo Dragon (Varanus Komodoensis), also called Ora by villagers of the island of Komodo, is the largest reptilian animal. Komodos usually have a greenish-brown color of scales. It grows from 23 cm in length at birth (from tip of tail to snout) to an adult size of 3 m. The weight of most males is about 175-200 lbs and the females usually weigh in about 150-160 lbs. but some Komodos have been over 300 lbs! The Komodos are carnivores with poisonous bites that eat large mammals, including humans. !
