New Relics of "River Taedong Civilization" Found in Pyongyang Photo shows a site of a village (the period from the Neolithic era to ancient Korea) discovered in Richon-ri, Sungho district, Pyongyang. PYONGYANG, February 1 (KCNA) — More relics have been recently discovered in different parts of Pyongyang. Earthen walls dating back to ancient Korea were unearthed in Kwangdok-ri, Samsok district in the northern suburbs of Pyongyang. It is believed that there may be only earthen walls dating back to Koryo dynasty. But this time, stratum of walls dating back to ancient Korea has been discovered there. Pieces of the mouth and body of a top vessel and stone ax, relics of ancient Korea, were unearthed in the 1,053 metre-long lower stratum of the walls belonging to Koryo dynasty. Photo shows an earthenware vessel of the period from the Neolithic era to ancient Korea, unearthed in a newly discovered site of an ancient village. Also unearthed inside the walls were sites of two houses 50 cm below the surface of the earth. Stone ax, stone arrowhead, stone dagger as well as at least 50 pieces of top vessels were found in the site of an oval semi-dugout 6.8 metres long on its eastern-western side and 3.4 metres wide on its northern-southern side and in the site of a house which was so badly destroyed that only its eastern part remains.

The Korean Peninsula extends for about 1,000 kilometers southward from the northeast part of the Asian continent and consists of the Korean Peninsula and over 3,400 islands. The peninsula and all of its associated islands lie between 33¡ÆN and 43¡ÆN parallels and 124¡ÆE and 132¡ÆE meridians. The northernmost point is Yupojin in Onsong-gun, North Hamgyong Province, and the southernmost point is Marado Island, Cheju Province. The westernmost point is Maando Island in Yongchon-gun, North Pyongan Province, and the easternmost is Tokdo Islets in Ullunggun, North Kyongsang Province. The standard meridian of the peninsula is 135¡ÆE, so Seoul local time is nine hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
The Amnok (Yalu) River and the Tuman (Tumen) River border both China and Russia to the north and Japan is just across the East Sea. Since 1945, as a byproduct of the Cold War, the peninsula has been divided at the 38th parallel into the Republic of Korea, or South Korea, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, more commonly known as North Korea.
Lacking formidable land or sea barriers along its borders and occupying a central position among East Asian nations, the Korean Peninsula has served as a cultural bridge between the mainland and the Japanese archipelago. Korea contributed greatly to the development of Japan by transmitting both Indian Buddhist and Chinese Confucian culture, art, and religion.

History History is one of the most important basic sciences that deals with the past of mankind. We can diagnose the present and predict the future based on a clear understanding of the past. The department offers four major areas: Korean History, Asian History, Western History and Archaeology. Each program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to study subject matters and problematic issues in a comparative context of time and space. Historians borrow methods and ideas from a wide range of fields in the humanities and social sciences and integrate them to describe or explain a particular time period or topic in history.
The courses aim to help students develop balanced knowledge for their future career and academic goals.
The department intensively conducts excavation works at many archaeological sites in the nation in cooperation with the University museum.
Graduates of the department serve society as professors, teachers in secondary schools while others are making positive contributions to society as research assistants in museums, journalists and business executives.

    The Art of War
When the Spanish began to colonize the Philippine islands the culture and technology was by no means that far behind most other areas of the world. Indeed, in many areas the Filipinos were quite advanced. The metal smith, Panday Piray of Pampanga, was so skilled at weapons making and other types of metal working that the Spanish entrusted him with opening the first Spanish artillery foundry in the country. The Spanish found that the Filipinos made their own small arquebuses, or portable cannons, usually made of bronze. Larger cannons made of iron and resembling culverins provided heavier firepower. The iron cannon at Raha Soliman's house was about 17 feet long and was made from clay and wax moulds. The most fearsome weapon though was the famed lantaka , or swivel gun. Unlike the Spanish cannons these guns were placed on flexible swivels that allowed the gunner to quickly track a moving target. The lantakas of the Moros gave the Spanish so much trouble that they always included native ships, like the karakoa, equipped with lantakas to counter the Moro weapons. The most impressive lantakas had two revolving barrels. These were eventually exported to South America, and may have become the precursor of the Gatling gun. Piray started a tradition of high quality metal casting that lasted for centuries in many parts of the Philippines. Many individuals with surnames like Piray, Viray, etc., may have ancestors who were members of the guilds of smiths who followed the Piray lineage. The metal work involving authentic native swords was also of the highest quality. Unfortunately, this fell into disuse among most of the lowlanders of the North. However, the Muslims and animists of the South continued to make very fine kampilans, krisses, etc., that can take many years of work to complete. Sword makers were also astrologers who waited for auspicious conjunctions of planets before proceeding with each elaborate phase of the sword making ritual. The passage of the sword from the maker to the owner was a very mystical ceremony, replete with all types of supernatural beliefs. A well-made

The Paleolithic Age in Korean history indicates that human inhabitants were present on the Korean peninsula half a million years ago, although they are not thought to be the direct ancestors of Koreans. These ancient people were pushed out of Korea into Japan and Siberia by a migrating group at the start of the Neolithic age. Paleolithic people were a hunting and gathering people. Archeological evidence shows they hunted rhinoceros, cave bears, brown bears, hyena, and deer. Cave paintings of these animals indicate that written communication and art were capabilities of Paleolithic people. Between 6,000 and 4,000 BC, tribes of Tungusic people migrated into the Korean peninsula from Central Asia and the Altaic mountain region. These people were of the Neolithic Age and are thought to be the direct ancestors of Korean people. Neolithic people in Korea began as a hunting gathers but by 2,000 BC they were living in an agrarian society. They lived in pit dwellings, started to weave, began to sew with bone needles, and were capable of very detailed painting on their pottery. They believed in Animism (worship of animals) and thought all natural objects had spirits. Shamanism (spirit worship) was prevalent among these people as it was elsewhere in Asia during this time period. Shamans were believed to have supernatural healing power and the ability to contact spirits to protect family and community from evil spirits.

Ronald Clayton: Reflections on recent travels in Korea Two years ago, I read a book by the art historian Simon Schama titled "Landscape and Memory" . This book is a meditation on the conflict between man and nature throughout western history. Schama leads his readers on a poignant but futile pilgrimage all over the western world looking for just one view of nature as it might have been without man's intervention. In the end the nature he reveals most clearly is human nature. Because the conflicts which define history are of course, all too human, nature is at most a passive witness to, and often a victim of human conflict. Schama's book seemed to validate my paintings but as a painter, I have a certain advantage... At first I integrated idealized landscapes from my mind's eye and memory into paintings that are otherwise abstract suggestions of industrial interiors. I wanted to set up a tension between the two by playing on the tension between abstract and illusionist pictorial space. Then in 1997 I visited Mexico on vacation. I went to the Yucatan and rediscovered for myself the ruins of Mayan civilization. I had previously spent time in American ruins of the

The Assyrians created many ideas and technologies used today, including the first postal system, a sexagesimal system of keeping time, paved roads, magnifying glasses, libraries, plumbing and flush toilets, guitars, aqueducts, laxatives and the use of lock and key. They also created the first boot a calf-high, laced leather boot with a sole reinforced by metal developed for soldiers, who had used open-toe sandals up until then. The Assyrian government also served as a model for future empires, especially the Persian and Roman. Known for its brutal and cruel warriors with well-organized and well-equipped armies, Assyrian rule extended over a vast area between 2,400 BC and 612 BC. Assyrians held power from Egypt to Cyprus in the west, through Anatolia, to the Caspian in the east. In 612 BC, however, the empire collapsed. In the first century, the Assyrians were among the first people to embrace Christianity. Until then, they worshiped their god, Ashur. In 33 AD, the Assyrian Church was founded.

K orea Land People Culture and the Arts of Korea Korean art possesses several distinguishing characteristics that create a unique style of its own. Korean art respects nature, and the extensive use of quiet and subdued colors is manifested in Korean paintings and ceramics. Humor is another characteristic of Korean art. Bold exaggeration, the acceptance of non-symmetrical cubic objects, and unique spatial beauty conveyed by imperfect roundness are examples of humor in Korean art. Quiet harmony may be cited as another characteristic of Korean art. This means that there is no excess, the right materials being selected in scale with the surroundings. With all of these characteristics, the Korean arts have inherited a unique aesthetic sense which depicts beauty with honesty and simplicity that is free of artifice. History of Korea

This course is designed to introduce you to the culture, history, and social practices of Korea. For the last half-century the Korean peninsula has been at the vortex of regional and global power conflicts. Little is known, however, about Korea's ancient traditions, unique culture, or important contributions to East Asian and global civilization. This course introduces the Korean people, their historical past, language and literary production, contributions of East Asian intellectual traditions, and its fascinating contemporary history as a divided nation-a product of the mid-twentieth century Cold War. We will also have to examine the remarkable rise of South Korea as an important Asian trading economy and its role in reshaping balance of power in East Asia. The course will use literature, film, historical writing, and contemporary popular cultural artifacts to explore this vibrant and fascinating culture. Course requirements are two examinations and a final.

    KOREA AND THE KOREAN PEOPLE
Peter Hyun The Land and the People Korea is a peninsula bordering on Manchuria and Rusia to the north, facing China to the West across the Yellow Sea and Japan to the east and south acros the East Sea and the Korea Straits. This peninsula, together with its adjacent islands, covers an area of 221,362 square kilometers. Although historically one country Korea has been divided into two halves since the end of World War II in 1945. The Republic of Korea in the south covers 99,221 square kilometers, making the nation a little more than twice the size of Switzerland. The eastern part of the peninsula is mountainous with several towering mountain ranges and virtually no coastal plain. On the other hand the western part has most of the large rivers and richer alluvial lands. Korea enjoys a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. In the extreme north, however, the winter lasts a full five months and the average temperature inJanuary and February is belcw freezing. In the rest of the country moderately cold dry winters and warm humid summers are the norm. Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant with crisp weather and clear blue skies. The Korean people are believed to be the descendants of several Mongolian tribes which migrated from Central Asia in prehistoric times. Although some historians maintain that a people of proto-Caucasian origin may have reached the Korean peninsula earlier, the Mongolian strain predominated the early Korean population.

Well, they did everything today's businessmen do, except they did it in stone. They carved a contract defining the terms, cut in their names along with a cosigner, and inscribed the punishment should one side not keep the promise, experts say. Koreans will now have the chance to see such ancient stone contracts, along with countless other treasures from the Paleolithic and Neolithic Age, at a special exhibition on Mesopotamian civilization going on at the Seoul Arts Center through Feb. 13. ¡ãCeremonial bull (1,900-1,700 B.C.) There will be about 720 relics at the show, including a map and a timetable of changes of Mesopotamia, 515 stone tools, 15 amulets used to dispel evil, 80 claystone contracts, 10 animal figurines, statues of gods, ceremonial articles, accessories and more. "Mesopotamia has a very special significance in the history of civilization, and this show will help us understand it better by giving us a close look at its cultural and scholarly products," said Ahn Sung-lim, scholar and curator of the exhibition. ¡ãWoman playing cymbals (2,500-2,000 B.C.)
