The tragedy of four civilizations
Any civilization will be ruined if it does not think of its own immortality
We are used to treating myths and legends as things that do not actually exist. However, if we take a closer look at the cultural inheritance of a people, we notice remarkable things. For example, some cultures that live absolutely separately from each other have legends that describe one and the same thing or event. Such legends surely have certain differences, but they are basically the same. Scientist Vladimir Shemchuk has studied the curious peculiarities of folklore and compared them to certain facts from the history of our planet. Shemchuk got the following picture of life on planet Earth over thousands of years.
The Bible contains a legend that there used to be a Golden Age on the planet. Then, it was replaced by the Silver Age, then there was the Bronze Age, and it was all over with the Iron Age. The legends of American Indians and of the African and Australian tribes say that planet Earth was first inhabited by demigods: the Assures (Titans). Then, there were the Atlants. The Atlants were smaller than the Titans; they soon died, and they were replaced by the civilization of giants.
We are used to judging ancient civilizations as badly developed and primitive. Yet, some findings in mines prove that the people of ancient civilizations could mine coal. They even had electricity and manufactured plastic items. All ancient written sources of information mention giants. Most likely, those abundant written legends about giants give certain reasons to believe that giants actually lived on our planet thousands of years ago. This theory explains why ancient constructions and buildings were so huge. It was not simply because of the wish to show their power. They were needed for giant people.

KIME performs the academic studies of the Middle East and the interdisciplinary studies with KYC,Korea Yemen Center. This page was edited to collect and exchange the academic materials concerned. Background Historically the Korean's first economic relations with Muslim goes back to the 8th century. However the official relationship between Korea and the Middle East countries started in 1957 when Korea had entered into diplomatic relations with Turkey. In modern context the full-scale Korea's advance to the Middle East was made in the early of 1970's after the 1st oil crisis of 1993. Thereafter Korea has not only expanding its business to the Middle East countries including the advance of manpower and construction but broadening its political, economical, social and cultural exchanges with them. The Middle East has variety of races, languages, religions and geographies, as it consists of more than 20 countries which is connected through the three continents of Asia, Africa and Europe. In historical aspect, the Middle East is the origin of ancient civilization of the Nile and Euphrates and Tigris culture. They succeeded in the influence of Byzantine, Persia and Othman Empire in this region. Geographically the Middle East locates at the vast region through West Asia to North Africa and ethnologically it consists of various races such as the Arabs, Turks, Iranians, Jews and other minorities. What is more, the Middle East coexists with Christianity, Islam and Judaism as the cradle of religion. Therefore the Middle East has to be studied more widely than any other countries in the world.

1. A Dravidian Language?
Q: What do you think about the theory today that the Indus language was a Dravidian language and that there is a connection between the Indus culture and today's South Indian culture?
T his is generally believed by those who are now working, particularly my friends like Asko Parpola, Professor Mahadevan, and the Russians Professors who have worked on this subject. They have all been working on the assumption that the language of the Indus people was Dravidian, that the people who build the Indus Civilization are Dravidian. But unfortunately I, as well as my friend Prof. B.B. Lal in India, have not been able to agree with this.
T oday the Dravidians are living in South India and we always say if they were the builders of the Indus Civilization and if they migrated from here because of some reason or the other, then something of that civilization they should carry into the south except just the language. But so far we have not been able to find any trace of the Indus Civilization in the whole of South India. It is there is Gujarat, it is there in Malabar, but not in the area where Dravidian is spoken today. Not a single evidence has been found.
R ecently when Asko Parpola came about three months ago to Pakistan, he said no Professor, what about Gujarat? Certainly in Gujarat we have got the Indus Civilization, right about to the mouth of the Narmada, right up to the mouth of the Tanti we have got this civilization. There is one more place on the Narmada we have got the Indus civilization, but not south of it. He said that this shows that people have been there. I said even then I will not agree.

About this book
The Korean created his own characteristic pattern by melting together the contents of East Asian science, technology, idea and philosophy in his own crucible. So the Korean, who has been active in a small peninsula attached to the north-east of the huge Chinese continent, gave significant influence to Chinese science and technology with his own creative model. During the Sejong era of the fifteenth century, in particular, Korean science and technology had reached its climax, thus its accomplishments could reveal themselves clearly in the history of world civilization, let alone of East Asian civilization.
This book contains the great part of my endeavor to realize those cumulative achievements, though I believe there still remain so many related fields that are not dealt in this edition but deserve a thorough investigation.

The Shoe on the Other Foot
If the United States and Iraq traded places, we would already be at war. I think I could speak for all Americans when I say that we would object, perhaps even with violence, if another nation like Iraq or even North Korea insisted that we allowed United Nations inspectors into our innermost weapons manufacturing processes. Worse, Americans would consider it an outright act of war if United Nations inspectors started nosing around OUR military facilities, especially inspectors from nations we consider hostile. In fact, if you get right down to it, whoÕs calling the kettle black? The United States is furious that Iraq may have a nuclear /biological /chemical weapons program, when the truth is that the United States has the largest by far of any nuclear /chemical weapons program and capability, and there is a strong possibility that we have a secret biological weapons program, as well. Iraq is under the leadership of a very intelligent dictator who not only survived a global effort to overthrow him by military force, but is a world-class player in the political scheming arena and if you ask me, heÕll survive this latest chest beating by the United States. In that regard, Saddam Hussein cannot be bested or removed from power, and he wins the chess match of global politics and the intrigue within his own fold.

Oasis evidence shows trade, farms, cities
May 3, 2001 BY FAYE FLAM
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS PHILADELPHIA A major early civilization rivaling in sophistication the ones that emerged in the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia, the famed cradle of civilization apparently thrived in central Asia between 2200 BC and 1800 BC. These people, who lived in desert oases in what is now Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, used irrigation to grow wheat and barley, forged distinctive metal axes, carved alabaster and marble into intricate sculptures, and painted pottery with elaborate designs, many with stylized versions of local animals, according to discoveries that have emerged during the past decade or so. "Who would have thought that now, at the beginning of the third millennium AD, we'd be discovering a new ancient civilization," said Fred Hiebert, an archaeologist at the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia. He has excavated in the region nearly every year since 1988, shortly before the Soviet Union fell. Some researchers consider writing to be a criterion for any true civilization, and now Hiebert said he thinks he may have evidence for meeting that, too a tiny stamp seal carrying four letter-like symbols in an unidentified language. He has dated it to 2300 BC.

Hong Kong should defend freedom When you sit on a comfortable chair today of any of various designs, or lie down on a modern bed, does it ever occur to you that the ancient people used to sit and sleep on the floor? As early as pre-historic times, the ancient people in China had already created the first piece of furniture for people to sit on the floor - sitting mats. Various prototypes of wooden furniture were designed around the sitting mat, such as short-legged wooden desks for the lap, chopping boards with legs, and short tables. These were the prototypes of the collection of furniture from ancient China that were low in height. During the Period of the Warring States, the floor bed, the ancestor of all Chinese beds, was designed. This design of these floor beds led to all types of floor beds in the subsequent dynasties.
