Origins of the Korean Language There is a consensus among linguists that Korean is a member of the Altaic family of languages, which originated in northern Asia and includes the Mongol, Turkic, Finnish, Hungarian, and Tungusic (Manchu) languages. Although a historical relationship between Korean and Japanese has not been established, the two languages have strikingly similar grammatical structures. Some have hypothesized that Korea and Japan stood at the end of two routes of large-scale migration in ancient times: a northern route from Inner Asia and southern route from southern China or Southeast Asia where the differences in the two languages are in part a reflection of disparate "northern" and "southern" influences, with Korean showing more influence from the northern, Inner Asian strain. The Korean language may be written using a mixture of Chinese ideograms (hancha) and a native Korean alphabet known as hangul, or in hangul alone, much as in a more limited way Indo-European languages sometimes write numbers using Arabic symbols and at other times spell numbers out in their own alphabets or in some combination of the two forms. See the section on this page for a further discussion of the orginal of hangul.

'Naranhi' sohgi is the beginning of each style form. It is not common to give this stance as a command, so here only the term 'joonbi' is used. • Overview - Welcome to Reading Korean!!
This HTTP file was created from some files we are using to develop our newest program called Reading Korean! . This program is designed to help students get a good start reading Korean. It can also be used a reference tool or an aid for teachers. We hope the the 'interactive' nature of this program helps students learn faster and easier. There is a lot more to our program than what is here and we hope to have a demo version online within the next month!
    History -
Hangul was invented in 1445 by King Sejong During the Yi Dynasty. It was originally called Hunminchongum and contained 28 letters. Hangul (as it is now called) currently contains 24 letters, 14 consonants and 10 vowels. King Sejong employed many of the Korean scientist and philosphers of his day to create the alphabet. Thorefore, Hangul is probably the easiest language to read. The shape of each letter corresponds to phonetic sound. The King and his committee of scholars designed the alphabet to be simple enough for any 'layman' person of the day to be able to read and write their own language. Up until this time, Korean could only be written in Chinese (which was completely different than the spoken language. Chinese was still the dominate means of published writings until the 1950's. After the Korean War, a nationalistic movement brought forth changes which included that billboards, shop windows, and office directories in public buildings be written in Hangul.
