Kwanzaa is a festive, 7-day African-American cultural holiday which originated in 1966. Created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa is celebrated from Dec. 26 - Jan. 1. Each day of the celebration focuses on one of seven principles ("Nguzo Saba"). The name, "Kwanzaa", is taken from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits." Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, but rather an African-American cultural holiday. It is a spiritual, festive and joyous celebration of the oneness and goodness of life, which claims no ties with any religion.

Kwanzaa Crafts Make festive place cards that picture an ear of corn. These simple-to-make table decorations are great for any celebration.
    Supplies needed
    • Heavy-duty construction paper or card stock (green + another color)
    • Unpopped popping corn (about a spoonful of unpopped corn for each place card
    • White glue
    • Scissors
    • A pencil, marker or pen
Cut a piece of construction paper that is about 5 x 6 inches (use any color but green). Fold the paper in half so that you have a rectangle that is 5x3 inches. Unfold it. This will be the place card. Using a piece of folded green construction paper, cut an oval with pointed ends it should be a little smaller than 1/2 of your place card (about 3 inches by 1 1/2 inches). You should now have 2 green ovals. Cut one of the ovals in half the long way. Glue the green oval to the bottom half of the unfolded place card. Squeeze a blob of white glue onto the green oval, leaving an edge of about 1/4 inch without glue around the green oval.

Make a string of African flags to decorate a room and celebrate Kwanzaa. These simple-to-make strings make a great classroom decoration. You can drape the strings across rooms or over windows. Part of the celebration of Kwanzaa involves learning about African history and culture. When you're done making your string of flags, locate the countries you have represented on a map of Africa
    Supplies needed
    • Many colors of construction paper or white paper
    • Crayons or markers
    • Scissors
    • Ruler
    • Glue, tape, or staples
    • A long piece of green, yellow, or red yarn or string
To see a page with pictures of African flags, click here . Choose the countries whose flags you want to make. With younger children, choose flags that are relatively simple. To make a simple flag (like Mali's flag) from construction paper, start with construction paper that is the main color of the flag. In the case of Mali's flag, start with a golden yellow piece of paper with the approximate ratio of 2:3 (height to width). Most flags have approximately that ratio. Fo complete Mali's flag, cut a red strip and a green strip about one-third the size of the flag.
