29. Probono
The pro bono project provides bright, energetic law students with the opportunity to explore the world of public service at a time when they are deciding on their careers and contemplating the civic contributions which they will make throughout their careers. The project provides students easy access to opportunities, during the school year, to work at charitable, civic, nonprofit, governmental, religious, and educational institutions in the law School's surrounding community. In this way, the project becomes a link between the law School and its community.

Search Carolina Law Information For Carolina Law Students The Pro Bono Program is open to all Carolina Law students who have completed their first semester of classes. Pro Bono projects give students a chance to perform community service and to get valuable experience working on real cases with real clients. Volunteers who perform 75 hours of pro bono work also receive a certificate from the North Carolina Bar Association and Carolina Law Students can participate in the Pro Bono Program in several ways. They may accept placements posted in the Pro Bono Office. These individual placements are received from non-profit organizations, attorneys in private practice, legal services organizations, and corporations providing pro bono services. Students may also create their own projects. Students interested in certain areas of law or working with particular agencies should contact the Program, which will try to match the students with their interests. Finally, students may participate in projects set up and administered by recognized student groups. To find out which student groups have Pro Bono Projects, stop by the Pro Bono Office. Students have been able to create pro bono projects with community organizations throughout North Carolina. Examples of student initiated projects include the Domestic Violence Pro Bono Project, the Innocence Project and Lambda's Power of Attorney Project. These projects were developed by students who saw a need in the community for legal services and found an attorney willing to supervise their work. The results include the provision of much-needed legal services and an invaluable learning experience for law students.

Pro Bono Work
An important part of our overall responsibility as a leader in the community is provision of free legal services to those in need. Varnum's primary vehicle for providing pro bono legal services is its active participation in the Pro Bono Program of Western Michigan, a program established in 1982 by the Grand Rapids Bar Association and Legal Aid of Western Michigan. Varnum participates in this program by making a financial contribution on behalf of each attorney in the Firm. We also encourage attorneys to accept referral cases through the program by treating time spent on cases in the same manner as billable time. Our commitment to the Pro Bono Program begins with our summer associates, who handle at least one referral case during their clerkship, a unique and positive aspect of our summer program. This sense of responsibility continues with our associate level attorneys, one of whom was recently recognized by ARC of Kent County as the Pro-Bono Attorney of the Year. Our partners also devote a significant amount of time to the program through supervising younger attorneys and summer clerks as well as through their own representations. Jonathan Anderson, a real estate partner, is currently serving as our pro bono coordinator.

This website and the staffing for the AALS Pro Bono Project is made possible by a grant from the Open Society Institute. This grant was obtained by the AALS Commission on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities , whose members served from November 1997 to July 1999. The Commission was the first systematic effort by the Association of American Law Schools to address the role of pro bono and public service in legal education. The Commission was established by Deborah L. Rhode, President of the Association of American Law Schools, 1997-1998. The AALS Commission on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities has left three legacies: 1) a report setting forth the Commission's findings and conclusions regarding the state of pro bono in law schools entitled Learning to Serve ¸ 2) the AALS Pro Bono Project, and 3) a Section of AALS dedicated to issues of pro bono and public service. The Report

The Project

In 1999, the President of the United States had this to say about these efforts of AALS:
