What is the difference between PRO BONO NET and LAWHELP Pro Bono Net is the name of our organization, which has developed two primary Web sites: probono.net is our lawyer-based site , and contains resources designed to help pro bono and public interest lawyers. Lawhelp.org is our client-based site , and is designed to offer the public easy access to legal information in a wide variety of poverty law issues, including referrals and legal self-help. Outside New York State, many organizations are adopting both our lawyer- and client-based models to build statewide legal information Web sites under the name LawHelp – this is the LawHelp project. W elcome to the Pro Bono Program web site. The University of South Carolina School of Law believes it is important to foster the ethic of professional obligation to provide service to the public, especially those who can not afford legal help. As such, the School of Law established the Pro Bono Program to engage students in a variety of volunteer opportunities. For over 12 years, USC law students have been actively involved in a variety of activities in service to the community. These activities range from working side-by-side with South Carolina attorneys on pro bono cases, tutoring children, teaching reading, researching law for non-profits, clerking with local public defenders, raising funds for local charities, easing the pain of child neglect and abuse and numerous other projects. Through their pro bono work students gain knowledge and skills of lasting professional benefit. All while making our state and community a better place for everyone. Pro bono Law Ontario
by Lynn Burns, Executive Director for Pro bono Law Ontario The term pro bono comes from the Latin Phrase pro bono publico , which means for the public good . For lawyers pro bono means representing someone free-of-charge who cannot afford a lawyer. Ontario lawyers have a long and proud tradition of serving their communities through their profession. Unfortunately, the public rarely hears about these good deeds. A newly-created pro bono resource centre, called Pro Bono Law Ontario (PBLO), will provide a coordinated approach to the delivery of pro bono legal services in Ontario. The idea for Pro Bono Law Ontario came out of a conference held several years ago to discuss access to justice issues. Although lawyers have always provided some of their time free-of-charge, they are not well?known for doing so. Pro Bono Law Ontario will provide the coordination, delivery and recognition of pro bono services in Ontario.
