IFLA/UNESCO School Library Manifesto
The School Library in Teaching and Learning for All
The school library provides information and ideas that are fundamental to functioning successfully in today's information and knowledge-based society. The school library equips students with life-long learning skills and develops the imagination, enabling them to live as responsible citizens. The Mission of the School Library The school library offers learning services, books and resources that enable all members of the school community to become critical thinkers and effective users of information in all formats and media. School Libraries link to the wider library and information network in accord with the principles in the UNESCO Public Library Manifesto. The library staff support the use of books and other information sources, ranging from the fictional to the documentary, from print to electronic, both on-site and remote. The materials complement and enrich textbooks, teaching materials and methodologies. It has been demonstrated that, when librarians and teachers work together, students achieve higher levels of literacy, reading, learning, problem-solving and information and communication technology skills.

Library Information Skills and the High School English Program. 2nd ed. Ed. by Paula Kay Montgomery. (Library and Information Problem-Solving Skills Series) Englewood, CO: Libraries Unlimited , 1999. 136 p. ISBN: 1-56308-544-5 (softbound). North America US$25.00; outside North America US$30.00. The premise of this book is that "in high school, it should be difficult to separate the library media center from the daily routine of classroom study." Using examples from national, state, and local standards, the author shows how closely the goals and objectives of the English curriculum and the library media curriculum align, and how a collaborative relationship between English teachers and the library media specialist may be used to achieve the goals of both. Complete integration of information skills instruction within the English curriculum implies one set of goals and one set of activities rather than two parallel sets. Hackman spends the first few chapters exploring the relationship between library media specialists and teachers and reviews the evolution of library media programs in US schools from the 1960's to the present. She stresses the importance of the LMS becoming thoroughly acquainted with each curricular area, participating in planning curriculum with teachers in all disciplines, and promoting the LMC's resources in order to further the goals and objectives of the classroom teacher. In addition, communicating with administrators is crucial in order to increase awareness of the goals of the library media program and their alignment with goals in other curricular areas.

EduLib: The National Network of Electronic Library Accredited Trainers
EduLib is an eLib project from the training and awareness section of the programme. Jane Core describes the project, and how it will affect librarians in the Higher Education community.
What will EduLib do for librarians and "user education"?
ser education, information skills, librarians as educators? - the literature is more plentiful than rich. Paradoxically, references to the application of educational theory, concerning the way people learn, and how this is reflected in the activities and skills of librarians, are most infrequent. Librarians are involved now in training and supporting the users of information, and have every reason to be optimistic about the value and need for this in future. Changing terminology, trying to redefine the image conjured up by user education, has often served to do little more than perpetuate the cliché that librarians really want to be teachers! The majority of librarians like being librarians but appreciate that they have an evolving educational role. EduLib aims to make a more lasting change happen in libraries by recognising and providing staff development opportunities for the unique and complementary role librarians have to play in higher education.
    Why should EduLib succeed now?

As Rex points out, there's so much to learn and so many sources of information, that you have to know how to find what you want. With this in mind, Rex devised a library scavenger hunt for her students. PROJECT: To find information using different library reference materials GOAL: To encourage kids to learn how to do research AGES: Eight to 12 PREP Your job consists of preparing the questions your child will be researching at the library. If it's been a while since you did any library work, you should begin by soliciting the advice of a reference librarian. Try to come up with a list of questions to fit your child's interests, sense of humor and ability.
