http://www.us-lighthouses.com/gps.php
Random thoughts by me To start off, I will first list my GPS hardware information. I currently have a Garmin Streetpilot GPS receiver, USA and Canada Metroguide software, Garmin padded carrying case, and 16MB memory module. The receiver comes with a serial cable to load the software from your PC. and a cigarette lighter power cable to preserve your batteries. What is all this stuff you ask? Well, the receiver is the thing that is used to triangulate your position on the globe by taking measurements from up to 12 satellites. With the software, you can load in different maps to provide street level detail for areas that you will be traveling in. The 16MB memory module sits inside the receiver and provides a storage area for the maps from the software. And the carrying case is, well, a carrying case. How does GPS work? GPS stands for Global Positioning System. This allows a person to find any particular point on the global by using a set of coordinates (Latitude and Longitude). It uses a series of satellites that are constantly circling the earth to triangulate your position. Once your receiver has a lock on at least three satellites, your position can be triangulated to within 3 meters (~ 10 feet) of your exact location. Most receivers have what is called a 12 channel parallel antenna. This allows the receiver to get a "lock" on up to 12 satellites.

General Lighthouse Literature A listing of general lighthouse information. America's Lighthouses - An Illustrated History (Francis Ross Holland, Jr., Dover Publications, Inc., New York, ISBN # 0-486-25576-X) - This general book on the history of America's lighthouses is a bit dated, but very thorough. It covers the entire country, and also has excellent sections on lanterns, fog signals, and the lives of keepers. The book also provides photos of many lighthouses as they originally appeared. Anatomy of a Lighthouse (Michael J. Rhein, Barnes and Noble Books, ISBN # 0-7607-2321-4) - This fascinating book delves more deeply into how a lighthouse is built, and why. The book uses examples from all over the world, and the photography is outstanding. Bay Beacons - Lighthouses of the Chesapeake Bay (Linda Turbyville, Eastwind Publishing, Anapolis, MD, ISBN # 1-885457-07-3) - Hardbound book containing history, technical information, and photographs of the current lights of Maryland and Virginia along the Chesapeake. See Forgotten Beacons (below), which complements this text well.

US Lighthouse Chronology Seeing The Light A chronological history of the United States Lighthouses Home Back
This chronology of US lighthouse history is by no means intended to be all-inclusive. It is included to provide an understanding of the important role that lighthouses fulfilled over the years, some of the changes an management and methods that existed over time, and the important role played by the lighthouses of the Great Lakes..
The Boston Lighthouse was illuminated, making it the first lighthouse established in what would later become The United States. A cannon was placed near the Boston Lighthouse "to answer ships in a fog," becoming the first fog signal established in America. The ninth law passed by the newly created Congress of the United States, and the first to make provision for public work, created the Lighthouse Establishment as an administrative unit of the Federal Government. This bill provided "the necessary support, maintenance and repairs of all lighthouses, beacons, buoys and public piers erected, placed, or sunk before the passing of this act, at the entrance of, or within any bay, inlet, harbor, or port of the United States, for rendering the navigation thereof easy and safe, shall be defrayed out of the treasury of the United States." President George Washington approved a contract for a floating beacon to be placed on the Delaware River at a cost of $264.00.

North Carolina's Lighthouses Bodie Island Light
T he National Park Service operates a visitors center in the old keepers house of Bodie Island Light. Since it is still a working lighthouse, Bodie is closed to the public. L ocated south of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore entrance on US Hwy 12, the present Bodie Island Lighthouse is one of three that have stood vigil in this general area since 1847. Details on these three towers are below F or additional information, contact the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Route 1, Box 675, Manteo, NC 27954; (252) 473-2111. Lighthouse Society Notes:
by Cheryl-Shelton Roberts
Height of tower: 165 feet, 156 feet to focal plane, Year Completed: 1872, Signal Distance: 19 Nautical Miles, Signal Pattern: white 2.5 seconds on, 2.5 seconds off, 2.5 seconds on and 22.5 seconds eclipse with 2 cycles each minute. Bodie Island Lighthouse is halfway between the Currituck Beach and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on Highway 12 south of Nags Head and west of Coquina Beach. Built in 1872 on the isolated Body's Island it remains today one of the most classic settings of American light stations. Its magnificent first-order Fresnel lens may be seen flashing its warning each night. The original spelling "Body" is thought to be named after the family who owned the land. The first and second Bodie Island Lighthouses tell the story of the great change in America's way of lighting her coast. The first Bodie Island Light was built under the reign of Stephen Pleasonton, the fifth auditor of the Treasury Department, whose main concern about lighthouses was saving money. His inspector would not let the contractor spend money for a proper foundation when the first lighthouse was built in 1848. In addition, it was equipped with a reflector lighting system and never considered an effective light. A short time after it was put to use, the tower started sinking on one side and had to be abandoned.

Sunset on Lake Superior. The lighthouse tower (right, foreground) makes for an ideal perch on evenings such as this. In 1996, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy published an article entitled "Would You Like to Buy a Lighthouse?" In it, Mackinac Center Senior Fellow for Economic Education Burton Folsom suggested that the federal government sell off its lighthouse properties. More than 100 lighthouses dot the Great Lakes coastlines of the state of Michigan. Folsom wrote that selling the lighthouses could be a win-win situation for all. Private investors would have a greater incentive to care for these historic treasures, the government would make money on the sales, and taxpayers could be relieved of subsidizing the properties, many of which are in a state of disrepair and decay.
