by Burton Folsom Jr., Historian Lighthouses are popular tourist attractions in Michigan and play a fascinating part in the state’s history. But, many of them are no longer needed and their upkeep and maintenance are costing taxpayers millions of dollars each year. To solve this problem, the federal government has asked an intriguing question: “Would you like to buy a lighthouse?” Last October, Scott Holman, an entrepreneur and an avid scuba diver from Freeland, emphatically answered, “Yes, I do.” And, he put his money where his mouth is. He placed a winning $86,003 bid for the 2,400 square foot Granite Island Lighthouse, 10 miles off the coast of Marquette. The island upon which the lighthouse is built covers just under 2.5 acres of rock and grass and is also home to an oil house, boat slip, dock, and boat housing structure. The first Indians and Europeans to visit the island saw no need to risk climbing the sheer 60-foot walls. It was not until dynamite was applied to one end in the 1860s that access to the island became easy and constant. Holman’s bid was the highest submitted for the Granite Island Lighthouse, according to Melissa Green of the U.S. General Services Administration. What few know is that it was not his first bid. After Holman submitted his first offer of $56,003, he suffered nights of restless sleep, sure that he had offered too little. He upped his offer to $86,003, calming his nerves, and then waited patiently. The new bid made Holman the highest bidder by a margin of $6,000, beating out a serious bidder who flew to Boston to personally submit his own bid. Over 80 people bid on the Granite Island Lighthouse.

THE NATIONAL HISTORIC LIGHTHOUSE PRESERVATION ACT OF 2000
    Presented by:
    Henry I. Gonzalez
Vice President for East Coast Operations
    United States Lighthouse Society
    Presented to:
Subcommittee on National Parks and Public Lands
House of Representatives July 13, 2000 The message is one of volunteerism, partnering with Government agencies, and preservation of lighthouses and their artifacts. It is a message we share with all of our colleagues throughout the non-profit lighthouse community. The U.S. Lighthouse Society strongly supports the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. Our society feels that this Act will provide several value-added accomplishments. First, through Section 308 (a), it adds Congressional and statutory backing to many of the historic lighthouse education activities already underway by the Department of the Interior, namely through the National Maritime Initiative of the National Park Service. The National Maritime Initiative has led the way and worked in partnership with the Coast Guard and with the non-profit lighthouse community on such projects as the 1994 Inventory of Historic Light Stations, and the Historic Lighthouse Preservation Handbook, issued in 1997. These ongoing activities and the focus of Section 308 (a) are consistent with the ever-increasing, nationwide interest in lighthouses. The biggest contribution of this Act is that it will provide a statute-based opportunity for non-profit organizations, educational agencies, or community development organizations to have "excessed" historic light station properties conveyed to them for educational, cultural, or historic preservation purposes. Currently, if a historic light station is deemed to be "excess property" and no Government agency is interested in taking conveyance of it, a non-profit organization that wants to maintain it for historic preservation and educational purposes has to compete for this opportunity in public auctions. Quite often, non-profit organizations cannot effectively compete financially in these public auctions. Furthermore, after the sale, there is no requirement for the new owner to make the historic light station available to the general public.

Let me tell you a little about the photographer. With the spirit of a sailor and the eye of a great artist, Paula’s work reflects the fact that she has long been drawn to the New England seacoast and like earlier generations of sailors and artists. Her journey has long been guided by the historic coastal beacons that are New England’s Lighthouses.

Nuclear lighthouses to be replaced Lighthouses powered by a strong radiation (RTG) are located in remote areas along the Russian Arctic coast. Photo: Thomas Nilsen Thomas Nilsen Exactly ten years ago Bellona reported the whereabouts of 132 nuclear-powered lighthouses situated along the north coast in Russia. The closest one was just a few dozen meters from the Norwegian border. Since 1993 Bellona has warned of the possible radioactive leaks into the environment and the threat of theft of the radioactive strontium-90 in the unguarded and distantly situated lighthouses. The lighthouses are located in the area without available electricity sources. They are powered by so-called radio thermoelectric generators, or RTGs, in which the strong strontium source of energy produces heat to power a generator. The generator finally produces electricity to power the lamp in the lighthouse. Strontium-90 is a waste product generated in a nuclear reactor. The USSR had access to this product thanks to the large reprocessing facilities in Siberia. Similar power sources were used in distant radars, weather stations and satellites since the mid-1960s.
