The United States Lighthouse Society
The United States Lighthouse Society is a non-profit historical and educational organization incorporated to educate, inform and entertain those who are interested in America's lighthouses, past and present.
Modern technology has doomed the classic lighthouse. The Coast Guard, in it's role as custodian, has automated all of the light stations in this country and, in the process, has eliminated the need for operating personnel. Sterile, rotating aero-beacons on monopoles have replaced many of those proud coastline ladies of former years with their sweeping towers of brick and Victorian gingerbread.
In selected cases, the Coast guard is licensing some formerly manned and now discontinued light stations to qualified groups. Many of the light stations that were considered as no longer functional have been transfer to various states, counties, or to non-profit groups and are now serving as museums, bed-and-breakfast inns or youth hostels.
Although the almost 300-year era of manned light stations in this country has come to an close, those remaining symbols of our maritime heritage can, and should be, preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. With this in mind, the U.S. Lighthouse Society was founded to assist in the restoration and preservation of America's lighthouses and help qualified local groups in their efforts to return the nation's lighthouses to the public domain.

How can I purchase a lighthouse? Federally-owned lighthouses rarely pass into private ownership. Generally a federal, state, or local government entity takes jurisdiction or there is a legislative transfer to a non-profit when a lighthouse is excessed by the Coast Guard. In 1999, one lighthouse reached the public auction phase of the property disposal process. For more information on public auctions, the General Services Administration (GSA) maintains a web site for its property disposal program
The process for disposing of lighthouses was modified under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act in 2000. This legislation places non-profit entities are on equal footing with federal agencies and other public bodies to apply for ownership of historic lighthouse properties. In the event no new acceptable steward is found, the act authorizes the sale of the property.

Government Information on Lighthouses
Responsibility for and eminence of lighthouses has been the responsibility of the federal government since 1789. The federal government at that time took the responsibility of colonial lighthouses from the states and Congress made appropriations for necessary funds. This began the U.S. Lighthouse Service. The administration for this Service switched hands between the Treasury Department and the Commerce Department many times before being consolidated by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1939. He combined the Lighthouse Service with the Coast Guard where it has remained. Coast Guard employees rarely man the lighthouses at this time, but it is still an important part of the service's heritage and history. This is a guide to the information the government holds on lighthouses as well as to the sites they sponsor for lighthouses on the East coast.
Sources for Information
National Park Service Within the National Park History Program, lighthouse information is abundant in the National Maritime Initiative. It was established to preserve America's maritime heritage. This site has 6 main directories for lighthouse information. Maritime Resources Here you can find lighthouses and light ships within the National Park System listed by state. Each lighthouse or ship is clickable to take you directly to that site.
