Key child care and early education trends in state legislation include an array of financing mechanisms, basic regulatory provisions, preschool expansions and quality improvements in the form of professional development and training for providers.
    Financing
State legislatures continued to expand financing for early childhood services in several ways in the past year. At least four states ( Iowa, Kentucky, New York and Texas ) enacted laws providing grants to programs. Some states ( California, Iowa, Kentucky and Texas ) expanded funding through local means. Several states ( Illinois, Montana, Nebraska and Oregon ) created tax credits for either parents or employers to support the care and development of young children. What is the LVS?
The LVS is a Department of Education initiative that provides Louisiana students with a gateway to web-based learning opportunities. The LVS is a part of the BESE 8g Louisiana Statewide Distributive Learning Network (SDLN) which uses web-based, satellite, telelearning and compressed video technologies to provide quality educational resources to students and teachers. First piloted in the school year 2000-01 as the Louisiana Virtual Classroom, this initiative utilizes the web, e-mail, and other online and offline resources to provide high school credit and Advanced Placement courses to students across the state. Top...
What type of student should take an LVS course?
Students should realize that taking a course online requires personal discipline and good time management skills. Students should not expect that there will be less to do than in the regular classroom since each course must adhere to the Louisiana standards and benchmarks for the area of instruction. Most people agree that students spend more time taking an online course than they typically devote to a traditional high school class. Public high school students should consult their school guidance counselor to make sure that they are ready for online learning. Computer expertise is not required; however, students should be aware that a certain level of computer skill and comfort is necessary to do work online.
